Default TargetMasers Milpitas- in trouble?

I went to TargetMasters in Milpitas today; I have not shot there for several months. The range is open as usual but gun sales are closed. Signs posted says until further notice but they hope to be back 02-15-19. The cases are still full of inventory.
I know many here dislike TM but I've been going there for over 20 years and never had any problems. Bought a few firearms there as well. Not sure if still true but I've heard they are in the top 10 firearms sales for NorCal. Like them or not- we can't afford to loose any more ranges in the SF Bay Area. I sure hope all is well at TM & that they will be back to business as usual ASAP.

I've heard the DOJ has inspected multiple gun stores in the Bay Area for one infraction or another - even for minutiae like unclear handwriting. I've talked to the owner once who told me the store has come under investigation just because they sell so many guns. Hopefully they're just training new FFLs or something.

If they have stopped selling guns, it means they are at the least knee deep in legal doo doo and trying to wade out of that.

I've been there a few times. Inventory in the shop impressed me, the staff ignored me, and the shooting range scared me.

Their prices are pretty dam good and their rental/shooting prices are awesome if you take advantage of their happy hour. Too bad the staff is useless and the shooting range is poorly maintained and I don’t trust the people that shoot there.

Not necessarily. They have some strange processes where multiple people have to approve each step to ensure they stay compliant. Could be one of these key people is on vacation so they can't do their paperwork without them.

If there was a problem with their actual FFL then they wouldn't be able to run the range.

Could also be a $$ problem where they didn't pay their DROS fees, or send in their renewal documentation in time so can't use the system to DROS firearms.

I like target masters. Don’t go there on a Friday or Saturday night and its fine, way too much hate on cal-guns for target masters. They have some the best selection and prices in the Bay Area and being able to rent a gun before you buy it is nice. I go during there happy hour times for 1/2 off and the place is usually almost empty

You worked there too ? Who was your handler ?

Probably the owner on vacation along with the head janitor being out and no one trained to do the work .

They have had problems with paper work , and guns vanishing into thin air before. ( spent a lot of time in the attic going thru boxes and boxes of 4473s for inspection ).

Yeah!!! The Asian guy. I met him before I worked there. I was in the store looking for a handgun and he was the one that helped me. I also worked with another skinny Asian dude and a white guy that had the Pringle’s mustache.

Either way- not many businesses can afford to sit on a lot of inventory plus miss out on all the related item sales for a month & a half or more.

For the guys saying just don't go on the weekend; when I mainly went to TM, I went during the week, and each time it was a cluster. I've been berated, I've been muzzle swept a billion times, and I've heard the staff try to sell guns based off of lies and scare tactics. Also, not putting up petitions against the anti-gun bills of 2016 in order to stay 'neutral'.

I will happily do my best to never go back to that hole.

Range is a city permit/license - nothing to do with FFL.

I thought I read somewhere you had to have an FFL to run a range. Maybe not...

TM is the closest range to me. That being said I've never gone because I keep hearing from various people that the crowd there is bad news, etc etc. I was worried about TM once Sportsman's Warehouse opened up just a couple miles away. I'm never been a TM fan but I sure hope they stay open too. Maybe I'll visit the range this weekend (early morning before the riff-raff shows up).

Damn, Bill has a pair. If my wife was my employee and I fired her, I would be having a lot of affairs with PALMela HANDerson. Not to mention all my crap would be in a black garbage bag on the porch by the time I got home.

The amount of unnecessary paperwork there that goes along with a firearm purchase is ridiculous. Therefore I will not set foot in there. However they do have very good prices.

Saw that the other night, when they first put up the signs.

The only word I got from the counter guys (Paul and Jesse) was that it was related to variously, back-end / personnel & training needs. I'm sure there's more to the story.

I have mixed feelings about TM, but they have one significant advantage: late hours. I often find myself finishing up work in San Jose with just enough time to (perhaps) make before Reeds closes, or close out the night in Milpitas. Gets a little interesting earlier, but generally it's quieted down by 10, even on a Friday night. You often have to pay close attention to the folks shooting nearby, and stay out of the lanes entirely, if needed - but I don't know of anywhere else one can routinely shoot until midnight.

As for bullet holes in the floor, barriers and ceiling. check.
More paperwork to fill-out _every_single_friggn'_time, than any other range I've been to? check.
Everything that essjay said above? check.

If Reeds, Markleys or any other local range was open late, I'd be there. Lately I've been going to 10th St SJMFR/SCVRC for the low-key clubhouse vibe. Somewhere you'd feel good about having kids shooting. TM ain't that place.

LOL, that Pringle's mustache guy is infamous.

I agree. Target Masters has nearly everything on the roster in stock and available. They don't charge MSRP+30% like another store in mountain view is known to do.

Their public range can be a bit sketchy, but all public ranges that rent guns are generally sketchy since the folks to go to rent guns don't usually have much training.

I have no inside knowledge of why they are not selling guns currently. I hope the issue gets resolved. We need our local ranges to thrive.

I agree with the OP. I may not love TM but the prices were fair and in a pinch, if I had 3 hours to spare, I could do a PPT there after my work hours. I'd rather not lose another range in the bay area even if I don't shoot there.

How could they have missed anything on an audit? They make you do extra paperwork and have it checked over by 3 different people!

I've been in there several times when I was shopping for guns and found their prices to be lower than most. The staff pretty much ignored me most of the times I was there. I used the range once and it seemed ok but it sure needed maintenance and repairs. There were so many holes in the ceiling and walls it looked like it would cave in. The LEO counter was always busy and they all looked like some pretty rough characters.
My favorite range is San Leandro.

As for bullet holes in the ceiling. check.

Somewhere you'd feel good about having kids shooting. TM ain't that place.

New ammo laws would cause this need.

But they have a really high turnover , had 25 people hired in one day , started firing them 4 hours into first shift . As he ( Bill ) once said " If I know Your Name , you did something wrong and your fired " ended up with 3 by the end of week , 25 more that Monday.

How do you think the last break in occurred , the perps climbed through the hole over the right side bay

They closed the sales counter last year for a couple weeks too citing not enough staff to run it. It did open again soon after.

I go there once a week, on a weekday after 8pm. I rarely see any issues with either the rental gun types or those who bring their own. Sure it does happen and if I see a safety issue I always say something (either direct or to the staff depending on the situation). The staff have been very responsive to that.

Its a great advantage to those who can't go early or at the weekend. Prices are awesome too. I just wished they could pay the staff more than minimum wage to retain the good ones.

Given the number of reports/comments on that range, I will NEVER go there.

I've never experienced anything remotely sketchy at Reeds, Sunnyvale, or Los Altos.

Was there several times and had sales counter open was able handle ask questions etc.
But yes they get swamped with people looking to try out the range. There are large groups several at a time. Lots of Asians.

Probably the owner on vacation along with the head janitor being out and no one trained to do the work .
That's what I'm thinking... don't they usually close or halt gun sales for a couple of weeks around the first of the year?

I only go to the range there and the employees there are pretty nice. However, buying a gun there is a different story. Last time when I got my CZ P01, it took me 2 hours.

They been citing staff issues for months now, hopefully it's just that. Tm isn't my fave range, it's pretty damn ghetto, but they got fair prices on guns, their ammo transfer fee is only $10 per transaction (no limit on quantity) and their happy "hour" range rate is a steal.

Thank god I am retired and have the time for their procedures, I have saved a lot of money buying on roster pistols from them.
Going there early during the week it is happy hour, and most of the patrons are older and experienced shooters, feel safe around them, have met some nice people as well.
Their website explains a bit about their predicament and even offers employment opportunities for people with a COE. "Want to Help - Get a COE and give a hand"

No matter what we think about the place or it's owner we need gun stores and ranges to stay open.
I will continue to go there as well as San Leandro and Reed's since they are the closest to me.

Bad experiences at Target Masters that I may have had, overcome my good times there, perhaps my age has given me the ability to be a bit more laid back and tolerant of certain situations, including the extra paper work to buy a gun and save about an average of 20% on most of my gun purchases.

My two bits. Happy shooting!
