Anyone having any luck with the Bear Creek arsenal 223 wylde barrels ?
Been trying to get a 1:8 20" stainless 223 wylde barrel from BCA to shoot. It seems to be quite a fussy pipe, and so far it surprisingly seems to favor the lighter projectiles over the 68-77 ones i tried.
About 150 rounds in, nothing weird seen when i borescoped it, all installed right, decent glass, but struggling to get it under 2 moa. Perhaps some of you have found the magic combo for yours, and if so i would like to know so i can try that load in this barrel Cheers! Last edited by vincentvangerven; 02-06-2020 at 6:32 PM.. |

That being said, 24-24.5 grains of Varget and a 75 or 77 grain projectile is nearly always accurate in about any rifle that'll stabilize those bullets. Have you manually checked the twist to ensure it's 1:8? It's not uncommon for twist rates to be wrong by a 1/4 inch or so for many manufacturers.

The "*" the O/P is using in his "1:* 20" description is likely an"8" since the "*" is the caps above the 8.

At the moment I'm running an BCA 18" .223 Wylde Heavy Contour 1:8 Mid-Length 416R Barrel - Black Wolf in a recent build. So far I've only been able to test it at around 75 yards. Got some .75" groups with a not so steady rest and while trying to zero in a new scope. Shot Sierra Matchkings 69 gr. along with some 55 gr. handloads running 26.5 grains of CFE223 with comparible results.
Thats about all I can offer for results. |

I've also not heard great things about BCA. They work, but it's not a Krieger, Shilen, etc.
I've also learned that specs aren't as important as the mfg. Strictly on paper, a 1:8 stainless steel .223 Wylde checks off all the boxes for a target barrel, but not if it's made by Bubba's Fencepost & Barrel Co. It wouldn't surprise me if a 5.56 1:7 CL barrel (in other words, all the NOT-accurate criteria) but made by a quality barrel mfg could outshoot the Bear Creek.

I’m not saying they do bad work, just that I’ve heard plenty of bad things and they are definitely priced on the budget side of stuff. I imagine they are not as consistent as other barrel manufacturers.
That being said, I would still manually check the twist rate. It’s quite possible the barrel is 1:8.5 or so and just won’t stabilize the heavier bullets. Good idea on trying the 69 SMK (or even the 65 SGK). In my rather limited experience if it won’t shoot Sierras pretty well pretty quickly, it’s going to take a lot of work to get it to shoot well at all.

Never heard of these guys.
I can vouch from personal experience on Rock River Arms, LaRue Tactical, and White Oak Armament match barrels getting you in 1 MOA range with hand loads. LaRue are really impressive (Lothar Walter barrel??), it’s a medium weight barrel and it hangs with the heavy match barrels, at least for a 15-20 shot string. |
