Seeing holes on paper through your scope; what kind, and how far out?
Regarding being able to seeing holes on paper through your scope (scope mounted on your rifle, not through a spotting scope), I’m very interested in hearing from actual experiences:
* How far out (in yards) were you able to see your holes on paper, what kind of paper, and shooting what caliber? * Be sure to include what scope you used (Make, Model, Zoom Level) Am particularly interested in hearing about holes in plain black paper targets (not splatter targets, or Shoot-n-See) Thanks Much! I shoot highpowder across the course matches. Targets are at 200, 300 and 600 yards. With my Konus 80 spotting scope I am able to see 5.55 and 30 cal at 200 yards. At 300 yards it’s doable but really depends on backdrop lighting. At 600 yards there is practically no chance in hell that you can see the 5.56 but may see the 30 cal. One more thing, if at a match your shots are not in the black of the target you are having a bad day…a very bad day.
It really comes down to lighting. At my local range we put a bright neon Orange clocks behind the target. The cloth is thin enough and I almost illuminate the when they sun hits it. This allows you to see the Orange backing through your bullet holes. Another shooter even tried using one of those battery operated spotlights behind his target and it worked. The Orange cloth backer works and you just have to put it at an angle so that it catches the sun. Thankfully, most of my matches I shoot at the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park which has the kongsberg electric targets which gives you a digital display of your target. Drones?
Has anyone used a drone to check targets? It seems like decent (DJI Magic Mini for example) drones are around $500. I know you can buy a target camera system for the same price, but a drone can also be used for other things.

i'm sure you can. but i wouldn't trust flying a drone out into an active firing line especially at public range. some yahoo will definitely try to shoot at it.
private range or BLM, i'm sure it would be ok.

I can see .223 holes in both the black and white on paper silhouette targets at 100 yards using my Crimson Trace CSA-2416 2 series 4-16x50mm FFP scope with MR1-MOA Reticle, zoomed anywhere from 12x and higher.

I can see 5.56 holes on splatterburst with my naked eyes. I would recommend splatterburst, they are awesome and convenient.
On actual paper I can see them at 6x and up. They sure are tiny though. https://i.imgur.com/b18VZdQ.png Last edited by CaliphobiaRick; 04-29-2022 at 8:38 AM.. |

it's easier to see .30 cal over .22
I like shooting steel at 600- 1K Fresh paint... and you can see your splatter on the paint at 1K - if mirage is low to me you want good scopes to assist in getting a hit... spotting scope for details....

I prefer bigger magnification for shooting rimfire at 100 yards so I can avoid lugging around my spotting scope.
I'm currently using these two mostly: 1) Burris XTR III 5.5-30x56 2) Athlon Midas Tac 6-14x50 With these scopes, at 100y and 1 inch paster targets I can select where on the 1 inch target I want to hit (R or L side of that target). On a black target you will need good light ( I concur with Mac Attack). I think. we are in a scope renaissance...there are some fairly low priced competitive scopes out there that give our expensive scopes a run for the money. |

Using splatter targets was able to see 6.5 grendel holes at 300 yrds with a Sightron stac 3-16x42. Switched the scope to a Crimson Trace 2 series 4-16x50mm for the FFP and illuminated reticle. Now I can reliably see the holes at 200, but struggle to see them at 300yds.
Using plain paper, both can pick out the holes at 200yds.

300 yards on black paper targets with a Arken EP5 5-25. 308.
Type of target, caliber, quality & clarity of glass, lighting are big contributing factors. @Mack Attack, neat idea, I'll have to try that some day. |

I can make out the faint blur of holes on paper at 800 yards. 6.5 Creedmoor. Tangent Theta 5-25. Paper is some kind of human silhouette. Blue body on tan background. And while I can sort of see the holes if lighting is right, they aren't clear enough to use them for any spotting purposes and a spotting disk is used. But I can certainly see the impact holes.
