Default 🔫 Intra-Familial Transfer Processing Time? 🕙

Hi all,

I tried replying to this thread, but it was too old and doesn't accept any new activity.

So, here I am asking in a new thread...

How long is the Intra-Familiar Firearm Transaction taking these days (Spring 2017)?

I have an unregistered 1911 .45 that I inherited from my father when he passed. I mailed (traditional postal mail) the form and check on Feb 27, 2017 and—on the other thread—the consensus was it takes 6-8 weeks. That was back in 2012.

I was wondering if that processing time has changed (shorter, longer). It's in the ninth week and although I did this using the old-fashioned mail method, is there a way to check the status?

For those that have recently submitted, what was your timeframe?

Did the DOJ cash your check?

If yes, they got it and the form.

Unless you have an urgent need to sell such a gun, the time does not matter. The OPLAW form documents a transfer that has already occurred.

I used a cashier's check. I guess I could find out if it was cashed.

Not really an urgent need, but that is the last hurdle in getting my CCW, according to the Sheriff's Dept.

You're going to carry this 1950 1911 for your CCW?

To expand on this...if you carry that pistol then have to use it in a event, are you willing to loose said pistol. The police may take it as evidence and you may never see it again.

Takes a matter of a week or so if you do it online, and you can keep track of it.

Ha-ha! Yes, I'm buying the Shield 9 for my daily carry. I just wanted to have the 1911 on my CCW and it was the only firearm I had when I started the permit process.

I know. I wish I would have done that online.

Since I did use snail-mail, what are some recent time-frames for those that did submit by mail?

If you have to use your carry, having it taken as evidence should be the least of your concerns.

So, I found out that the DOJ cashed the check on March 15, 2017, just over two weeks after I mailed it.

Has anyone mailed the Intra-Famililal form to the DOJ lately?

I did like 3 months ago. Still nothing in the mail. But they cashed the check in about 3 weeks.

Sounds like the state—take your money, then make you wait.

Did you mail it in January or February?

People tend to get a response back in the mail around 3-4 months after their check is cashed.

I did one about 1 month ago online and received a letter in the mail 3 weeks later notifying me that the records have been changed to reflect me as the new owner.
At the time I received the letter my online account still said the transfer was pending.

If you'll let me know when get/hear something, I'll do the same.

A year ago I sent in the form. Confirmation letters came back in about 5 weeks.

Just depends on how busy they are.

Can you sell the firearm before getting a confirmation letter?

Edit: in a transfer from child to parent, does the parent need to have an active Firearm Safety Card at the time the paperwork is filed?

Yes to both.

There is some speculation that the Automated Firearms System might have a problem with a DROS record received and entered before a prior-date intrafamilial record is entered, and it might be better to not confuse things. I have seen no evidence it has happened, or if it has happened, some problem has occurred because of sequencing.

Nice! Thanks for the update.

While waiting, I bought a new firearm and had it added to my CCW license. When I get my intra-familial email, I'll add that one, too (since I've already qualified with it).

Thx again!

Mine (finally) arrived today. The had it approved on June 9 but the letter was postmarked June 19 and it arrived June 21.

So, from mailing the form to receiving the approval took exactly:
  • 3 months, 25 days, or
  • 114 days, or
  • 16 weeks, 2 days, or
  • 2,736 hours, or
  • 31.23% of 2017 (my favorite . . . NOT!)

At least now I can have it added to my CCW. I've already qualified with it and all the paperwork is at the OCSD.
