I'm curious how much it would actually cost to switch this forum to XenForo and have a proper web server so there wont be any lag.

I've come across all sorts of low traffic forums for rare hobbies where nobody contributes any money to the forum but they are all running perfectly.

The reason why more people don't contribute is because they want to see action taken. I'd be happy to pay $1.00-2.50 per thread in the marketplace or a small amount under $30 for a lifetime membership if I know the website is going to operate normally. I'm not sure if there is an automated payment system for forums to do this type of thing.

I understand the owner must be a 1 man operation here and he is busy and has life events he needs to worry about and wants to keep it free and open for everyone. But imagine the money you can make from it!!!

even when the site was running normal they didn't become contributors so it has nothing to do with how the site was performing, slow or normal.

In every society there are the takers, which is how I would refer to the non contributors here in the Calguns society and the givers, who of course are the contributing members here. The takers always seem to be the first to complain about their free ride. 😎

I frequent two watch forums and two gun forums. I am a contributing member on all of them. The knowledge I gain, the entertainment I receive, the ability to buy and sell to like minded people, is well worth the price of admission.

As an IT engineer, the Web site is behaving as if it's doing some sort of DNS lookup before it offers the next page. Is that what's going on at this time? If so, then it's just like with SSH sessions, if "UseDNS=yes" is turned on; you'll get about 20-30 seconds of delay before login is allowed.

If Web server capacity is up to snuff--and it ought to be, given modern machines these days--then it might be a good idea to do a packet capture to see what's going on, filtering by client IP address.

Nope, If during SSH sessions you get 20-30 seconds delay before login prompt then whole setup is wrong.

Currently it's running on EC2 Amazon instance. Web hosting company Calguns is hosted with exited web hosting business.
Looks like resource usage is more than that instance can handle it. Probably to save on costs before migration to new host. It's temporary. It'll be fixed, we just don't know when.

May I ask what exactly are you doing as an IT pro? Because that last suggestion is like asking car mechanic to check weather forecast in order to troubleshoot low engine compression.

You mean it is not proper to check if high or low pressure system forecasted, before doing engine compression test?

My question is what sort of donation would it take to speed this site up?

Would $1000 do it? $5,000? $10,000?

I understand there's a massive amount of data flowing thru the server(s) at any point in time but ye gads surely something can be done to speed things up a bit..

This site as been an utter failure for a LONG time. Clearly, it's grown beyond the capability of the current owner to properly manage it. There are companies (Verticalscope) who specialize in purchasing floundering forums and bringing them up to modern standards. They've gobbled up almost all the other gun forums that I've participated in. I'll bet they'd make an offer on CalGuns in an instant. Maybe they won't offer as much as the current owner thinks it's worth?

Lag doesn't seem so bad right now, it is actually pretty quick but I am guessing that is because there is not a lot of people on the site at the moment.

how many EC2 servers are serving this site (clustered or no?). I'm assuming they are behind a LB? This site is just serving up pages so not sure why this is lagging so much. You can def get analytics from AWS on where the issue is, use them

AWS is Anti-2A. There’s always the possibility of someone “helping” it to perform poorly.

I tried to run a search on 1911 thread titles. Really trying to search the marketplace. It timed out. Kind of a bummer.

While I’m not entirely sure what “indexing” does, I’ve experienced similar problems with databases that “weren’t indexing.” We fixed that and experienced a dramatic performance improvement.

Not sure if it matters to anyone, but the laaaaaaaaaag on mine has reduced itself quite a bit. Still slow for what it should be, but it seems to be better, at least from my pov or at least for now, anyway?

my 2 cents. seems like most web access has slowed starting mid 2021. device or server or traffic who knows. near everyone I ask agrees. it is as if corona fog snuck into the net.

A number of things have abruptly gotten better for me.

Opening a forum or thread is down below 2 sec

I use the 'mark this forum read' tool a lot - tonight it executes faster than I can scroll down to see the thread titles change from bold to plain.

Edit: Posting this is under 5 seconds.
