Just received a rifle my Grandfather and father had. Now it is mine.

It is a Marlin 22 cal. lever with a Hex barrel.

Hopefully with a serial number somebody may know what year it was made.

It is a Model 39. Ser# 556XX

Can anyone solve the mystery?

556XX? Is that correct? Because that comes up as invalid.

according to this it's 1921-1925 if there's no prefix.. the serial lookup for Marlin's put that number in the 1800s so there must be specific serial data for those..

http://www.marlin-collectors.com/for...25%20to%201932.

The Marlin Model 39 was made in 3 different series from 1921 to 1939. The first series had a serial number with no letter prefix and was made between 1921 and 1925. The second series had the letter "S" as a prefix to the serial number and was made from 1925 to 1932. The last series was made from 1932 to 1939 and had a "HS" serial number prefix.
If your gun does not have a serial number prefix or the letter "S" prefix, then it is an earlier version, and you should not use modern, high speed ammunition in it. You should only use either standard velocity or target ammunition in it. The last version with the "HS" prefix are guns that were updated to use the new, high speed ammunition at the time.

No serial number pre or post Letters.

So 21 to 25 it is.

Thank you.

Once stopped in to The Jawbone Canyon Store years ago back when Charlie Walker still owned it. As I pulled into the parking lot I could see Charlie standing out front with his hands on his hips, looking out across the desert. It was a day of fierce Santa Ana winds and Charlie was facing into the wind. What are you doing Charlie? I asked him. His answer? “I’m waiting for all my sh.. that blew away yesterday to come back!”

Was at the LGS Saturday morning. They had a Long Ranger on the wall in .243. The wife handled it and was very favorably impressed. Asked about the availability of the same rifle in 6.5 Creedmore and it is, they can get it. After thinking about it all weekend I think she's (pardon the pun) pulling the trigger this morning.

You guys are going the wrong way! The Mojave is the other way and not far.

"The wife handled it."
Usually the preamble to:
"... and my she just bought a new lever gun." lol

That chambering was the closer I bet. Looking at the 308 myself. Congrats to a dedicated MLC member!

I was interested in learning of such gun trusts some time ago, and more recently as well. After researching it, I’ll pass.

There's a beautiful pre war Winchester 71 in 348 for sale in long guns for sale.
Out of my price range but I enjoyed drooling at the pictures.

Dan,
My friend has a Winchester and an Italian clone 71 in .348. With factory ammo, quite a recoil but a hog hammer for sure.

We reload. But even components for the 348 cal are hard to find. No 348 GC's on planet earth apparently.

I have drool guard on my keyboard for looking at gun sales and looking at HW's barbecue pics. lol

Way before that store. Charlie had he old one that burnt down. It was about the time when all the gas stations were having to pull and replace their tanks some years ago.

This firearm, although new from Henry, has been posted about in this subforum before but here it is again.

Granted, a pistol with snakeshot is more handy, but this looks like a lot of fun:

Henry Axe .410

No, I don't want it, but there it is. And in the text of the ad they mention it being an NFA deal, but with some small lo0phole. Still mostly out of reach for we Californians, no doubt, but with time and patience I suppose one could bring it home.

I just thought it was neat as a snake gun.

I shot the full size Henry 410. Nice shotgun.

But for the cost of shells, lack of utility and price, I passed.

Could be I am Winchester Model 12 warped. And just think a shotgun should be pumped. lol

oh I'm no hater of the .410, actually quite a fan..

top is a 20ga but the rest are .410.. #2 and #3 are mossberg 183 models, the bottom is a Stevens 59A deluxe .410 tube feeder

this was my grandpa's mossberg 183 .410, still on the farm where it belongs.. my buddy and I were busting clays with it last month

I think that the Henry .410 would be a fun gun.I couldn't think of what else I would do with it except have fun. I was at BIG 5 the other day and .410s didn't seem all that expensive.

Bob,
Did not mean the 410 lacked utility. It was the first shotgun I hunted with as a kid.

For me though, it offers no added utility because I have a firearm that I prefer for all its uses. Most at lower ammo costs because I reload them all. Much respect for the 410. Just do not need one. Have other uses for $736.

Nice engraving. Beautiful shotgun you have.

Thanks, Mark.
It is a Wingmaster with Enhanced Engraving, they made 'em from '97 to '01 and mine is a '99.
I've only seen one other like it that has the dog and birds on the left side of the receiver and I passed on buying that one a couple years before this one came across my path.
Had to get it to hunt quail with my dog.....

Now THAT is a slick, neat pump gun with some nice artwork.
I remember seeing one of those back in Pennsylvania, at a rancher’s hunting cabin. Thank y’all for the fond memory of that trip!

Here, let me add some conflict to the 'ol "JM Marlins are superior to Remlins!" discussion.

That's crazy stuff. Are you able to cycle the lever and eject an empty ?

Is this a new to you gun?

Quote:
... It seems to cycle fine. No more difficult than my 45-70 or any of my other many Marlins...though I haven't done them side by side yet.
it cycles ok with nothing in the chamber?

Best of luck

Cycles fine with nothing in the chamber, and seems to eject the shorter Hornady brass fine, though one of the gouges is still present on the Hornady brass. Just not the giant one near the mouth.

Ordered the pre-75 22 1/2" barrel. Not ideal, but... :/
