Default Winchester firearms collection

When I toured the Cody firearms museum recently the tour guide said that Olin's original intention was to donate Winchester's massive firearms collection to....

Disneyland! Can you imagine what would have happened to it there?

Fortunately one of the senior officers of the company had a connection to the Cody museum and got it donated to it instead.

I toured a local Military Museum and was told all firearms are rendered unserviceable. I have read articles of stolen historic firearms, only to find in the article, that the museum had rendered the weapon inert. I could not find a Federal Law on this, but there are probably State Laws.

I did find this:

https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/gu...53208/download

Quote:
2.1.9 Unserviceable firearm. An unserviceable firearm is a firearm that is incapable of discharging a shot by the action of an explosive and is incapable of being readily restored to a firing condition. The most common method for rendering a firearm unserviceable, and that recommended by ATF, is to weld the chamber of the barrel closed and weld the barrel to the receiver.21 The chamber of the barrel should be plug welded closed and all welds should be full fusion, deep penetrating, and gas or electric steel welds. In instances where the above procedure cannot be employed to render a firearm unserviceable, FTB should be contacted for alternate methods.

It is important to remember that rendering a firearm unserviceable does not remove it from the definition of an NFA firearm. An unserviceable NFA firearm is still subject to the import, registration, and transfer provisions of the NFA. However, there is no tax imposed on the transfer of an unserviceable firearm as a “curio or ornament.” See 26 U.S.C. 5852(e). NOTE: “curio or ornament” is only descriptive of unserviceable firearms transferred exempt from transfer tax. An unserviceable firearm transferred as a “curio or ornament” is not necessarily a “curio or relic” firearm for purposes of the GCA unless the weapon is classified as a curio or relic under the GCA.
I can imagine for liability purposes, whatever weapons are in the possession of Winchester are already welded shut, and they most certainly will be, if they go to Disneyland.

I just spoke to a friend about that museum. He said it’s one of those “not to be missed” stops.

I have a standing invitation from Bert Hartman to do a "VIP" tour with him, and it's on my bucket list. I'm guessing you didn't get to see what was in the basement? Bert said what they have on display, is just a fraction of what's there.

Cody Firearms Museum is terrific and worth a visit if you're in the area.

I've been to a few good collections: NRA, Smithsonian, various military base museums, etc.

Cody is something else. Best museum presentation of firearms that I've seen, lots of great info.

The firearms portion is a full day and the art another half day, at least.

Don't forget to try and see the Springfield Armory Museum in Springfield Mass. Mind blowing place for a milsurp collector.

I have that same invitation as well. I think next year we should take him up on it!

I was told that the majority of the Cody museum arms are live. If they get any that are deactivated they keep them that way but they do not deactivate live arms. They also rarely shoot any of them.

They just re-did their display area and have about 5k on display and another 2k in storage. They rotate some in and out of display but not a whole lot.

My tour was running late so I got to fondle a Hall rifle, a cut down trapdoor that had Indian decorations on the stock as well as a mint 1873 rifle and a 1911 made in 1915, all down in the basement

I'll be in the Cody area for the last two weeks of October. Visiting the museum in on the list of things to do, along with whacking an antelope. Sure wish I could get the behind the scenes tour - you guys are lucky to know Bert.

That is wonderful, it just breaks my heart to see a great old weapon dewatted.

Hit Cody and Browning museums on same trip a few years ago. Lots Of fun. On another road trip I ran across a splendid little gun museum in a small town in Arkansas near Missouri state line. Hundreds of classic guns, especially revolvers, guns, all in working condition, with absolutely no security other than two elderly women at front desk.
