Default CCW to Catalina

Taking a weekend trip to Catalina out of Long Beach, returning to San Pedro via the ferry. I was wondering if there was any security or regulations for going on the ferry, while conceal and carry. I will also be backpacking across the island for 4 days. The last time I was in Catalina I got off a cruise ship 15 years ago. This is the first time taking the ferry.

If you're taking the ferry, you need the permission of the ferry captain before you can a firearm aboard (regardless of whether it is concealed or not). Please refer to 18USC2277.

What he said.

Federal laws require you to obtain permission from the vessel's owner/captain before you can legally bring a firearm on to that vessel.
Failure to obtain permission equates to a Federal felony.

18 USC 2277
Explosives or dangerous weapons aboard vessels
(a) Whoever brings, carries, or possesses any dangerous weapon, instrument, or device, or any dynamite, nitroglycerin, or other explosive article or compound on board of any vessel documented under the laws of the United States, or any vessel purchased, requisitioned, chartered, or taken over by the United States pursuant to the provisions of Act June 6, 1941, ch. 174, 55 Stat. 242, as amended, without previously obtaining the permission of the owner or the master of such vessel; or
Whoever brings, carries, or possesses any such weapon or explosive on board of any vessel in the possession and under the control of the United States or which has been seized and forfeited by the United States or upon which a guard has been placed by the United States pursuant to the provisions of section 191 of Title 50, without previously obtaining the permission of the captain of the port in which such vessel is located, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
(b) This section shall not apply to the personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States or to officers or employees of the United States or of a State or of a political subdivision thereof, while acting in the performance of their duties, who are authorized by law or by rules or regulations to own or possess any such weapon or explosive.

Let us know what you hear. It be interesting to know if the policy of the ferry company is 2A friendly or not. Also the method that you've asked in advance, like via email/phone days before the trip or same day at the dock.

Unless things have changed significantly since the last time we rode over and spent a day, not likely you’re going to need to CCW on your trip.

Don’t recall ever seeing scumbags on the Flyer or the island.

There’s little gangster thuggery there on that island, believe it or not. It’s the offspring of some of the workers who commute to that island that have “contaminated” It, by bringing their living trash over with them.

Also, bringing a gun across shouldn’t be a big deal, but I’d call ahead of time. They do have rifle hunts on the island through the island conservancy, so that tells me the ferry is allowing the transportation of said firearms. They probably will tell you to lock it up like how TSA does for airplanes and such. That’s just a guess on my part. A phone call will answer your questions better than here.

Most victims of violent crime that left their ccw and weapon behind, probably would give a different opinion about that… if they’re still alive that is.

It's not likely you will ever need your CCW at all. But I still carry every day. In case I'm wrong.

Yup, like a fire extinguisher in the house…. You’ll probably never need to use it, but it’s there 24/7.

Odds of your house burning down...1 in 3000.

Odds of your house being robbed...1 in 36.

Odds of woman having some type of violent encounter in her life from the age of 12 on...73%

Odds of a man having some type of violent encounter in his life from the age of 12 on...89%

At least according to the interwebz.

From the above Catalina Express PDF, it can be in luggage if declared.
Doesn’t mention CCW.
I wonder if they would even allow one to ask the Captain

I never gave it any thought. I also didn’t walk through any detectors or pat downs nor was I asked last year when I took the ferry.

Trans Catalina Trail has a lot of up and down so I would think about every ounce you are carrying. It adds up after 3-4 days.

No more wild pigs on the island. They were professionally eradicated.

Still bison, though.

Didn’t know that

We used to take the old bumpy seaplane out of San Pedro to Avalon as a kid.
We’d see the boar come down to the beaches at night

The seaplane itself was part of the Catalina “experience”

Sad about no more boars

Yes it is sad. No goats either. But, the place is lousy with deer now.

It’s been awhile but we’ve airlifted people off the island that were gored by a bison.

The hired a guy I know from New Zealand to do it. Shipped his helicopter, automatic rifles and shotguns over to Catalina and paid him a couple of million bucks to kill all the ferals.

Wifezilla and I flew a charter helicopter over from Long Beach about 15 years ago and they never security screened us.

No security on the Express, no metal detectors. Took the ferry over in June.
