Default Hearing Protection

What are you hunters using for hearing protection these days? I've been using Howard Leight slim electronic earmuffs since 2011. They still work, but they're worn out a bit and the pads don't seal around the ears like they used to. I typically double-up with earplugs underneath, but am looking for a better solution now that I'm looking to hunt a bit more frequently. I'm looking for an earbud type of design since the Howard Leights tend to interfere with my hats too much.

Old guy advice ... protect what you have with the best you can afford. Once it's gone you don't get it back.

I'm bad

No brakes when hunting... Either Surefire in ear or foam plugs in ears...

need to chat in a duck blind or walking and looking for birds....

Don't want over ear peltors for this... unless its cold and they are more an ear warmer

That’s what I have.

Damaged hearing cannot be recovered.

And, while we’re here, also get the best eye protection you can.

This thread is a good one. In there is a link to a thread regarding MSA Sordin's deceptively low 19 db rating and why they are actually much better than other ear protection with higher ratings. Worth a read.

MSAs arent better than the ComTacs. i have both.

figuring out his budget would let us know what his choices are. hearing aids would be for someone who went with the least protection possible, not the cheapest protection possible (plugs).

Read the link on post 10 in this thread and tell us what you think.

As to budget...thinking about my ears and possible hearing loss, even partial loss, I s**t canned the budget.

OP, note that they're making gel cups now for the Howard Leights. Prohear makes a set and Noisefighter make a set with a slot that allow for safety glasses to slide through. There may be others too.

the thread is pretty long winded, was there a certain post in that thread that was interesting?

i understand your point on hearing protection at all costs and i share it. what im referencing though is that a pair of foam earplugs protect your hearing better than a $400+ pair of comtacs.

what most are looking for is safe enough protection and the ability to still converse with your buddy.

You are asking for the best technology. The best technology is one of those things where you usually get what you pay for. You are asking for a device that eliminates a very narrow range of sound, but passes through others. That technology generally exists. It is not cheap, however.

yes, thats why im asking op what his budget is.

if his budget is $70 just get a custom molded pair of plugs.

if his budget is $500 get a pair of comtacs with an extra set of gel cups.

if his budget is $2k get a pair of pro ears.

I use custom fit rubber in ear plugs which are awesome and Howard leight muffs which are not the most comfortable.
