Default Why is Michigan being hit so hard?

My wife has been following the spread and she asked me this question. I thought it might be due to the cold weather and lack of hospitals in the heavily populated southeast but I don't know.

On some of the Michigan forums today they are blaming the governor, who is afflicted with TDS. I guess she refused FEMA assistance earlier and is now requesting federal help?

Does Michigan have alot of illegal immigration? Cause that seems to be the problem in California mostly the Bay Area. That and having three international airports with in 30 miles of each other

I don't think they had much illegal immigration before Obiwan was president.

They had a R governor until 2018 when they voted in Gretchen Witmer. She was the ditz who gave the D rebuttal to the last SOTU.

I thought the Chinese populations coming to the US coveted Detroit in particular for "cheap" property?
Wayne County - Detroit - 850 of the 2350 cases in Michigan - no lock down there yet either. Or at least not one as early as others; governor hasn't even declared a state of emergency of any kind.

You're thinking of Minnesota and Omar.

Her squatmate, Tlaib, the one who should wear a veil but doesn't, is a representative from Michigan.

Is Michigan actually being hit that bad? 60 deaths, 2856 positive tests = 2.1% mortality rate based on measured/reported data. If they are not testing as much per capita that could make this seem worse than it is.

That's not terribly relevant. Travel (legal or otherwise) is how the seed is planted, but the exponential growth comes from the community. And the mortality rate depends on the community demographics (including obesity, I heard), hospital availability, and possibly some genetic predispositions.

We're going to see variations in mortality rate state to state. Age demographics will probably dominate that. It's expected.

Default article I saw was old

The article I saw was old, about the governor not doing so but she did;

This I also found:
Monday, March 23:

'Do not panic': Michigan governor issues stay-at-home order
"Whitmer talked about dire results akin to those seen in Italy if people do not follow her order. At least 1,328 people have tested positive in Michigan since March 10, and COVID-19 deaths have climbed to 15."

They did a stay at home order 4 days after California. They were already at 1300 + cases at the time.

Besides the obvious of population density and international / interstate travel frequency, there does seem to be positive correlation to public transit use and spread rate.

MI - big sneak into US spot from Canada. This time of year the river may still be frozen and they can walk/drive across like they used to do with booze during prohibition. Even in the 1800s they were coming in to the US through that border. Fare for Brits to NY was $200. It was $100 into Canada and they'd even haul you as far as Ontario where they needed farm help.

Isn't that correlation rather obvious?

Fortunately I've not gone too many times to Detroit proper. My sister says there are whole swaths of people in Detroit without running water. She says this is why they are having so many cases. She's an a arch liberal so take that with a grain of salt.

A fifth of Detroit's police force is now quarantined; 25 officers test positive for coronavirus

It's a good thing that a small segment of Detroit residents will not take advantage of the situation. No way, no how.

detroit has at least 16k ethnic chinese residents (that we know of) and had 2 china towns at one time.
the also have the largest mass transit system in michigan
like new york, lots of residents went to wuhan and then rode the trains every day since they got back.

Thanks for the tip. My sister was saying how much better this bimbo was than Rick Snyder was.

This might make her rethink that notion.

What a disaster! Threatening front line doctors and pharmacists with losing their licenses when they are putting their lives on the line to save patients. She is just trying to grab headlines and prove how strong the TDS is in her.

I bet there's zero cases in rural farmland michigan.

My cousin has been working from home for a couple of weeks out there already.

Haven't heard from my uncle, but I imagine the few cops left in flint are just calling it in now.

My bet is it is like NY.
Think how everyone is crammed on top of one another
Think how being stuffed in a train like sardines in a can
Think standing room only bus rides.

All this puts faces in faces

Now think the plan that they want to push all into these type of living arrangements and riding public transit together.
There now is a great argument against it, because even social distancing becomes impossible unless they weld your doors shut, when living like sardines in a can
