Default Florida non-resident CCW, in person or in the mail?

Howdy y'all,

With the recent discovery of my long-lost daughter in Florida, I'm planning to start spending a lot of time there. Being one of those places that CA+UT+AZ doesn't cover, and since I'll be damned if I travel anywhere I can't carry, that means it'll be time to grab a FL to add to the collection.

However, getting an appointment to do the live-scan here where I live in CA is a pain... they're great guys at the sheriff's office, but they're horribly busy all of the time.
SO... I'm trying to decided if putting in for the permit would be easier to just walk in to the right office while actually in Florida, versus wait for the appointment to get the live scan here and do it all through the mail.

Any idea what would be more convenient?

TIA for anyone who's done FL already.

You can find an LE agency that rolls prints in CA (on an ink card) or do it when you’re out in FL. The upside with doing it in Florida is it can be done via live scan and submitted directly to the state rather than being mailed in.

You’re in good hands if you get John Roberts – no, the other one – to help you. He handled mine over the phone when my license got lost.

If you already have UT, you should have an NRA pistol certificate. FL will want a copy as well.

All can be done with their packet, they’ll mail it to you, and I think it has the cards already and just fill out, get rolled and send it with certificate and check is all you need.

My renewal isn’t for a few years (FL is good for 7), so I’m not up on the latest.

1. Get your prints rolled manually be a local LE agency, it MUST be LE and they MUST stamp their agency on the upper right back of the card. There is no electronic option for out of staters. See fingerprint instructions - (https://www.fdacs.gov/content/downlo...structions.pdf)
2. Complete mailable application, include requested materials, found here (https://www.fdacs.gov/Consumer-Resou...License#bymail), pay your bribewhoops sorry "fee" and then mail off in a flat rate envelope.
3. Wait (I am currently waiting)

I recently got mine and the process took 6 weeks from when I sent it in to when I received my permit in the mail. Don’t know which part of CA you’re from but I’m in SoCal and got my prints rolled by Arcadia PD. Cost was $20 for two cards. Just had to call to make an appointment for the next day. Send that in with your certificate, app, photograph, and check and you’re good to go.

I ended up getting my physical prints rolled in FL. Sure, we have the option to have them rolled here by a local PD or sheriff's office, but no one was offering that service at the time I was looking. I called every agency and sheriff's substation between Blythe and Covina and had no luck.

I got my prints rolled at the community police office at the local shopping mall by Altamonte Springs PD. This was about 20 min from Orlando where we were staying. This agency allowed for walk ins and/or appointments for this service when I did it last Summer.

As for training certification, I think I submitted both my AZ certificate and CA certificate dated for 2020 when I mailed my packet in summer 2021.

I wasn't allowed to do livescan when I went. The police officer in Altamonte Springs told me non-resident applicants require a physical print card for submission. Ymmv op

Does it have to be an LE to get fingerprint card? There's a place that does it close to me.

Yes. Non-resident applicants must have physical rolls of prints collected by a law enforcement agency.

So others dont make my mistake I sent in a FL application with a print card done by a licensed fingerprint site that was local to me.

19 Days after receiving the packet (Today) I got a call asking me where I got my prints done. Since they were not from a LE agency they couldn't be accepted.

I did some digging and the Sacramento Sheriff Volunteers do ink fingerprinting out of the Central Division office but you should call ahead and make sure they are available. Phone number on the website is wrong call 916-876-8300 instead. Ink fingerprinting is a $20 donation to the VIPS.

When you mailed off your Florida application...your application has a tracking number...go to the Florida dept of public safety website..look up CCW tracking info..type in your tracking number from your application with your date of birth
..it should come up showing the progress of your application.
Also ..apply for your Utah CCW too....if you haven't done so already....I'm going to assume you already have your California permit..

My issue with FL application was the payment online it gave me an error and the email failed payment and it does not let you try again 1 and done system. FL already had my fingerprints and cashed the money order. I check the status every few days.

Utah I need to find a trainer to give me permission to apply and in California, I live in a Neutered CCW County. I'm trying to get as many as I can because my new career search requires travel.

UPDATE***
Received a letter to redo the entire FL application 6/15 with new Tracking number they did not like online version.

I have California & Utah and just sent my application to Arizona today.

Where do we get the most up to date and reliable information on reciprocity?

The USCCA app still shows Nevada accepting Florida, but there is a post elsewhere here on CalGuns with a link to a Nevada site no longer accepting Florida?

Before I apply to Florida and presuming I get Arizona approved, what would Florida add to those three (CA, UT, AZ)??

Based on the USCCA reciprocity app it appears that having FL would change both FL and North Dakota from restricted carry to unrestricted. Are there other benefits?

Thanks in advance, this is giving me a headache.

Nevada no longer accepts Florida...by adding a Arizona permit...you get new Mexico..by getting Florida...you just get Florida..I got Florida because it's cheap and easy to get and it's good for 7 years...as in the other states..you'll probably need a enhanced Idaho permit..in which you'll have to travel to Idaho to apply for..

I was reviewing that according to the Nevada website they updated online on April 2022 but the letterhead is dated 7-1-21 and listed Florida.

The confusing part if you become a resident of Nevada they void the permitted use after 60 days unless you apply and get a Nevada CCW.

North Dakota only recognizes resident permits from the states they have reciprocity; non-resident permits aren't recognized. That happened either late last year or early this year.

edit:

I believe legalheat.com has a pretty good reciprocity map.

It is strange and the language is in dispute the FL CCW must be a resident to be legal in North Dakota and if you have an Arizona and are a non-resident with a CCW you are ok.

It appears North Dakota is the best CCW to get with the most coverage 38 states.

The law in North Dakota is written wrong so the Gov is working on fixing it from what I read because of the resident and non-resident and class 1 and 2 is confusing and can cost them money if challenged in court.

It looks like although Nevada no longer accepts Florida, it still accepts CA, UT and AZ. I suspect they dropped Florida as a direct rebuke to DeSantis. Harry Reid turned Nevada into a blue state over a decade ago. But not by a large margin. It’s all about the politics. Unless or until SCOTUS sets them all straight. We can hope and pray SCOTUS sets a standard akin to national reciprocity and shall issue.

Where are you seeing that they accept CA?

List from NV website is: https://rccd.nv.gov/uploadedFiles/gs...pr%2022)PM.pdf

California is nowhere on the NV list.

Default Ink Fingerprinting in San Diego

Just applied for my non-resident FL CWL the other day and submitted the application online, which is ridiculously easy. Active Duty military and Veterans get priority treatment and their firearm training requirements waived.

***For San Diego folks***
You can walk into the San Diego County Sheriffs Department Administrative building (no appointments needed) and get your fingerprints ink rolled there, which meets the FL CWL application requirement to be taken by a LE agency. They also carry the FD-258 forms if you don't already have one. The cost is $25 per card.

I also did mine online but they sent it back and told me to fill out the paper. Just to let you know hopefully they process it.

Interesting …

I had hoped they did away with the difference in processing for resident vs. nonresident. The technology is there, after all.

Mine renews in two years so hopefully, especially with the developing judicial landscape, there will be no distinction soon.

When I talked with them Via the chat feature they said that my non-resident application looked good, and that when they received my fingerprints and processed them, they would send me my license. Only time will tell. how fast did they get back to you to tell you to manually fill out an application?

They sent me an email and an envelope was in the mail the next day.

They send all the paperwork needed and requested a photo I got from Walgreens 5 bucks for 2 passport sized I used a coupon. and new file numbers and a request to use blank ink. They included a self-addressed envelope to mail back I just had to put the stamps.

I live close to the post office and they take care of me I get stuff 2-4 days ahead of schedule because I was a union guy at my previous employer.

It took a while to figure that out. On their automated answering machine they gave their hours for fingerprinting services. I just walked in, signed in, and waited for them to call me up. No appointment needed!

Default UPDATE

I confirmed with FDAC that my online application is valid and good. On their online portal to check the status it told me that they sent me a letter that my application was incomplete. I went on the chat and talked with an agent, and they said it was because I hadn't sent in my fingerprint card with processing fee. I informed her that it had been delivered last week. She told me to disregard whatever mail they sent me and that when my background check clears, they'll issue me my CWL.
