Default East Bay Area Window Person

My family room sliding window no longer shuts properly. I'm not sure if the window needs to be adjusted or needs parts replaced from age. It seems like part of the vinyl that holds the sliding window piece has bowed in the center not allowing the window to close all the way.

Looking for someone that can fix.

Thanks

oof, another one. This is why I haven't bought a nice brand new track McMansion....they are all stucco with two dozen cheap vinyl windows, each one a ticking time bomb. I wish you could go to builder and pre-buy and give them some decent windows but thats just not in the cards.

vinyl windows set in stucco are like vinyl Landau tops on cars in the 1970s. They self destruct just sitting out in sun in a FEW years and then its a messy full replacement, and its never as good as it was.

I suggest a bit of silicone spray or WD-40 or whatever and thin cheap knife or prybar and maybe soft mallet or heavy book to tap the window fully closed and leave it closed. If can't latch it use window blocker stick but you should use those regardless.

Not sure if Armor All or other UV blocker will help vinyl windows last longer.

Sorry dumb question, I know sliding usually infers horizontal sliding, but is this horizontal sliding or vertical sliding?

Window

Do a quick diagnosis

Gently slide window closed

Press on the center portion about 6" from the top of the window.

Press like you are sliding the window closed. Instead of sliding from the center you are applying pressure closer to the top. Adding pressure a bit up vs either left or right.

If this makes the window latch, then it's as simple as adjusting the rollers.

Finding any qualified vendor / contractor now - it's expensive and difficult.

If they can't make $10k, they won't show up.

Who makes the windows?

I will take a picture to better illustrate. Ill have to see who makes the windows..they are over 21 years old at this point...came with the house...

Pushing from top and bottom doesn't help because the center is bowed out preventing the full closure. I have a bar right now as my lock since I can't use the latch. The right-side on the same window is a ticking time bomb. Its latched right now but I can tell if I unlatch it may not get it closed again also.

Lets talk vocabulary here.
Fixed pane: the side that doesn't move.
Operable pane: the side that moves.
Frame: the part that holds the two panes.
Center mullion: the "post" between the operable and fixed panes that the latch locks to.

Now, which pane is giving you problems? Or is the center mullion bowed on the fixed pane causing a latching problem?
If you can send me a picture of the problem, I can possibly guide you through fixing it.
PM me if you would like help, I'm a glazier by trade, 20+ years in the trade. Pretty much all types except auto glass.
