Default 1903 Heavy Barrel NRA Match Rifle

I have a 1903 Very heavy barrel NRA match rifle. It has the flaming bomb with NRA engraved in the floor plate. I found a similar rifle on an Auction site, serial number was very close. If anyone has info about it please let me know. I tried to post a picture of it but the link would not go. I will post it on ArmsList under 1903 Heavy Barrel rifle. Thanks

Post the Serial number for any help on the date. The barrel has a date stamp by the flaming bomb, Xx-Xx format. Post pics to imgur or another site and link then if you want any info on the parts completeness / correctness.

Or go to the CMP forums just to learn about it generally as there is a lot of info already there.

Springfield 1903 info site figured out that it is a Heavy Barrel Match listed in the Springfield Research Service as being issued to the Coast Artillery Rifle team on March 19, 1924

FYI - the "flaming bomb" is the US Army Ordnance insignia, indicating that the weapon has passed the "proofing" test, i.e. 2 to 3 times the recommended amount of powder or "charge".

I do wish that people were more accurate with such things...

I believe the 'flaming piss pot' as we called it, is a property mark. A punch mark below the serial number on the receiver is a proof mark for the receiver. A punch mark in the center of the bomb is a further proof mark for the barrel.
