EDIT

both barrels were check for locking before feet were cut and were pressed in full battery while being cut.

It's my understanding the feet drive the barrel up into battery, the link is only there to retract it out of battery and if the link is too short it will not give the feet enough room to force the barrel up and into proper full engaged lock.
The lockup occurs when the lower lugs come over the top of the slide stop pin.
The lockup is NOT from the REAR of the slide stop pin bearing against the slide stop features of the lower lug.
That surface is what stops the slide.
You don't want to thin out that rear surface BECAUSE that's what stops the slide!

The link is only there to pull the barrel OUT of lockup.
The link should be loose when the barrel is locked up between the slide, slide stop pin and frame.
The link should be somewhere between straight up and 0.044" to the rear of straight up.
If it's swinging more than that AND the link going too far past center is the reason you had to put a longer link in, that's not good.

Stated another way, if the barrel will lock up with the link free while the link is straight up, but then need a longer link to let the barrel's feet bear on the slide stop, the feet were cut too far to the rear.

I underestimated this project quite a bit, I've built a few of carbines and couple of rudimentary pistols but this thing started late December and three months later I'm approaching the "test fire" phase between this and my day job I don't have a lot of spare time but ty for the compliment.

Default SUCCESS!

SUCCESS!

Remington greenbox factory load FMJ .40 with 16lb recoil spring (slightly higher than recommended for a 6" heavy slide from what I have read).

one single factory .40 FMJ was loaded into the magazine chamber was racked and set to safe, magazine was removed.

Pistol was remote fired strait down barrel to the dirt wrapped in a 6lb fiberglass welding blanket in case of catastrophic failure such as shrapnel. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS, USE YOUR OWN PERSONAL JUDGEMENT OR CONSULT A QUALIFIED GUNSMITH BEFORE FIRING A NEWLY MANUFACTURED/UNFIRED FIREARM.

Pistol fired and ejected where it was caught by the "safety blanket" and it is what I believe caused the case to be caught in the slide. case head has a slight extractor mark, the interesting part is the primer is not bulged but seems oddly light strike with a halo around it. (see pic)

next step is to put a 22lb spring and the 10mm barrel and test fire a single round. all goes well I need to book a day at the range put 10 magazines without issues through it. Anyone have any thoughts on duracoat?

Any chance your slide has a 45acp firing pin channel but you are using a 38 super firing pin?

It was part of a 10 mm set so it's definitely a possibility it was designed for a 45 firing pin. Is it a reliability issue or a safety issue if one uses a 9 mm firing pin in a 45 ACP firing pin Channel?

If you had some super hot loads, it would be.
The firing pin should mostly fill the firing pin hole.

Pull the firing pin out of the slide and slip it into the firing pin hole in the breech.
Is it like a hot dog in a hallway or does it seem to fit nicely?
Fitting nicely would be within perhaps 0.010" or less of clearance while sloppy would be 0.020" or more clearance.

seems a little thin for the hole, I have no Gage-pins on hand. a .45 firing pin and spring set is $15 with free shipping so I figured why not?

Test update: additional 4 rounds were tested, the slide locked back on an empty mag and it seems to feed fine. Still need to test the 10mm barrel/20 lb spring. All goes well I'm planning on sneaking up to Angeles firing range for some real testing.

Default Is it supposed to be this difficult to change recoil springs?

That 20lb spring was a b**** to get in, took a vice and lot of effort to get that and the buffer into place for the two piece guide rod.

.45 firing pin was a definite no go, wouldn't even enter the FP hole. Oh well maybe I'll grind it down save it as a back up firing pin $15 who cares...

Two 10 round magazines of reloads and Remington green box in .40 ran flawlessly/locked back on empty so I'm very happy with that ejection seems strong with a 16lb spring.

The 20lb spring was a total pain to get into place but the 10mm seemed to run ok. I had two hiccups with the 10mm, the slide appeared to close slightly out of battery maybe 1/8" or so, no rounds were attempted to be fired I racked the slide and got through the final rounds the last round locked open but seemed to get caught mid ejection as it was still in the breach sitting on the magazine.

Seed part.
All you need is a frame, slide, barrel and a bunch of other parts...

lol heck, I have a spare safety, a spare firing pin, a spare firing pin retainer and all the tooling for another 1911 might try to do a compact in an economy frame/barrel instead of going 2011 high-end fancy schamcy parts.

Probably going to range tuesday/wednesday and I'll post a range report I'm dying to see how it prints with the .40 barrel.

Muzzle looking nice and flush. Cut on a mini mill with virgin 1/2" end mill and boy did that thing scream and shake knocking off .050" with .002" passes.

I LOVE the .40 barrel sticking out, I'm totally duracoating everything but the barrel.

Range report:

.40 barrel 16lb spring.

the first magazine I was having some issues with the slide returning to full battery it seemed to hesitate and stop 3/16" before closing after the first magazine it seemed to break itself in as it was fed 20 round Remington greenbox, then some 80+ random reloads and finally some Winchester lawman JHP. everything after the first magazine worked fine I'm assuming it was final break in period? 100 rounds without issue ejection was reliable sending the brass up and out about 5-6 feet before hitting the ground. Slide locked back every time, 10+1 was loaded fed fine. limp-wristing had no effect on function. Grouping was good, better than I can provide with my hands.

.40 dual hands

10mm barrel and 25 rounds of armscor fed/ejected flawless recoil seemed surprisingly manageable (I only had 25 rounds). 10mm seemed almost as accurate as the 40.

10mm dual hands best group.

I was getting the same groupings today if not smaller as I was getting with a ruger 6" bull barrel mark 2 with target grips so I can safely assume the gun is more accurate than I.

Default FINISHED! (I think)

Thanks to Randal aka AR-15 barrels, who did an awesome job sandblasting the frame and Eric from L10 machine for hooking me up with the extended dustcover piece.

I put a coat of duracoat in "HK black" I'm overall happy with the finish, not perfect but looks good imho.

Great work! That's the best weld job I've seen for a dustcover to date.

You must have missed the one I did for mosinvirus.
Probably because you can’t even tell it was welded after he finished blending everything.
