Default Dixie/Fry fires in Butte/Plumas county

I don't know of any calgunners up there? I'm not able to go help out right now like normal, but if there are CG folks up there, they may need it.

Sounds like a new start an hour or so ago just outside of Quincy, between Quincy and the main body of the Dixie fire.

Son-in-law is on it. He said he is on a train spraying foam along the tracks.
I found this picture of the fire fighting train. I do not know if this is my SIL's crew.

The "Flyfire" up there went from a start to 1200 acres in a hour.

NorCal is getting slammed this summer.

Our place is up at Almanor…evac warning at this point. The areas burning have burned before…this state and federal management of forests around here is screwing things up big time.

I don't know anyone living in that area either; although I do know some living near other fires right now.

Here are...

The official Cal Fire site for the Dixie fire.

Dang, Tarmy, I am sorry to hear this. I hope the fire passes only nearby and leaves your investment of hard work unscathed.

Rick, prayers for your sil's safety. Five firefighters are in the hospital after becoming trapped by reversing winds. Their condition is unknown.

I use this to stay on top of fire action du jour. Works great on a laptop tethered to your phone if you're on the move.

there was a time when govt would let lumber companies clear out the trees for better forest and land management as such we had lots of fine lumber including redwood available at our local lumber stores and furniture manufacturing boomed. But since the libs took over, All of the Forests have gone untouched and unmanaged. Most of the Furniture comes form Canada these days. I hope you guys do well and make it through.

Close friends of ours are at Lake Almanor West… they had to evacuate last week and we’re on pins and needles, but it looked like the backfires that were set late last week did the trick (so far) and saved that area.

Incredible how huge that fire footprint is.

I am on the Peninsula…where your friends are was right in the middle of the path of that fire. The work those firefighters did was friggin’ amazing. West area looks safe for now. They have released some engines from that area. The East section is still a problem. I hope your friends place is safe. There is ALOT of law enforcement around protecting empty/evac areas. This area is big time pro gun. A lot of locals are volunteering security and fire watch as well.

The amount of ash and debris, large debris that is lifted and lands miles away is amazing. My place was a total mess.

In Chester today there are fire trucks from all over the west coast and western states.

My biggest bitch is that the state and feds are really to blame. They just are idiots about Forrest management. The area they are going to stop the fire is a private logging company’s land…that is LOGGED. Imagine that.

It's running again. They evac'd a bunch of the surrounding area and east shore to Chester a couple hours ago.

Chester and ALL surrounding areas just went mandatory evac towards Susanville about an hour ago.

Not good.

The fire got away from them again. Cleared us all out. The fire has reached Greenville as well.

Tomorrow is supposed to be worse with wind and embers blowing ahead.

This is not good.

Now they have a bunch of other fires going west of the town of Redding too so planes are being pulled to stop those too.

My in-laws are on the peninsula too and are making their way to Chico. Doesn’t look good for west shore.

Yea, looking at the current arcgis heat maps, it looks like it's dang near made it as far west as 32/36, and winds are blowing it straight towards Chester now with gusts to 25mph tomorrow and thursday afternoon too. Ugly.

Doesn't look good for Lake Almanor. Early into the red flag warning and the fire is already making a run for Chester. Scary.

That fire is running hard right now…

It looks like it is going to wrap around to the north of Chester and another set of runners that leveled Greenville is running easterly behind Dyer and towards Susanville.

That whole Warner valley area has a lot of folks up there…a lot of people are homeless tonight and I can’t even help out…

This is killing me inside…our place is surrounded…

Angry

WildFire devastation everywhere statewide. And the DimRats are making it WORSE. One of their "VOTE BUYING SCHEMES". Ag workers overtime labor law. Coupled with Minimum Wage scams.

Have literally killed a GREEN BUSINESS, whose BUSINESS was FIRE PREVENTION.

Goats and Sheep can't graze/browse all forest areas. But when utilized in targeted areas around small isolated towns. They have made a marked positive impact on fire mitigation.

But they also say the new law for smaller operations will put them out of business, as already has happened for larger outfits — one Petaluma rancher laid off five herders and sold his 2,000 ewes and 1,500 goats.

There seems to be a difference of opinion in the media as to whether it is now the 3rd, 2nd, or largest fire in California history. I think the 'split opinion' has to do with whether they differentiate between a 'single' fire and a 'complex' of fires.

As of the moment, it is now, tentatively (under investigation) listed as the 2nd largest... Top 20 Largest California Wildfires

At it's current size, 463,477 acres, it's got quite a ways to go to approach what is, also tentatively, listed as #1 - the August Complex at 1,032,648 acres.

The August Complex was what, 38 different fires?

August Complex should have an asterisk.

It is running again due to winds today…

At this point they can only try to limit the damage…

This thing will burn until it runs out of the mountains…then hills and hits dirt. Not good.

Our place is standing, for now, surrounded by fire.

My SIL's crew was demobilized this morning and they are bringing the rig back home. They have a long drive ahead of them but should be home late tonight. I am thankful he is out of harms way, and pray for the replacements and remaining firefighters. He probably will not see much home time if any, because there are others out on mutual aid assignments from his department. But at least my daughter and grandkids can go over to the station and visit him.

Reported Saturday... As Dixie fire tears through communities, some refuse evacuation orders with guns in hand

Quote:
...Greg Hagwood, a Plumas County supervisor, said that in the last 72 hours, as fire has swept through or threatened small mountain towns including Greenville, the evacuations have grown tense — in some cases, residents have met law enforcement with weapons.

“They are met with people who have guns and [are] saying, ‘Get off my property and you are not telling me to leave,’” he said.

In response to those who flatly refused to evacuate, he said, deputies were asking for next-of-kin information so they would have someone to notify if the holdouts died...

On Thursday, authorities arrested three people who stayed behind in an evacuation zone in the Lassen County town of Westwood. All three were taken to jail, cited and released — two on suspicion of entering or remaining in an evacuation area, and one on suspicion of loitering on private property, said Lisa Bernard, public information officer with the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.

“When we ask people to leave their homes, we take our duty to protect their property very seriously,” Bernard wrote in an email. Those who do stay behind are required to shelter in place inside their homes, and those who are found roaming the streets risk arrest, she said...
I don't have a problem with people refusing to evacuate and using (*gasp*) "guns" to reinforce the point; not to mention to guard against looters.

However... If you refuse to evacuate, don't expect someone to risk their lives at the last, possible moment to come in and 'rescue' you. Further, don't look to sue for 'damages' or 'neglect' or 'abandonment' down the road.

It kinda reminds me of Harry Truman and Mount St. Helens...

You make a life for yourself in a specific place and spend a lifetime pursuing it. Then... something... happens to threaten not only that lifestyle, but that place. It's become part of who you are and, in some ways, may even be an inseparable part of your self-identity. At a certain point, I'd say you earned the right to decide that if it's going, then you're going with it. If you accept the responsibilities which go with that perception, then no one, not even the Government, has the right to say different.

Some people are jerks and in a local crisis, they're still jerks.

There is a civilized way to interact with authorities and part ways with mutual respect and understanding. Then there's the thug-jerk way of interacting with authorities that gets written about in the news papers.

I prefer to navigate my way through life the civilized way.

I suspect many of them share your preference.

As you indicate, what you hear about in newspapers may not have been the actual conversation or how it transpired. While there are 'some' in the small communities throughout Northern California (just as there are everywhere), not all residents are thugs, jerks, or uncivilized... including those who refuse evacuation orders.

You note that it's a 'crisis' and people, including 'authorities,' will often act differently than the norm due to the induced stress of a crisis. Individual authority figures can be awfully 'insistent' with something like evacuation orders. Residents can become pretty myopic and disconnected in their thinking. Older individuals can just flat out be stubborn. None of them are necessarily being or intend being vituperative. Yet, in the moment or to an outsider and/or depending on how the story is told, it can seem that way.

Likewise, there is evidence of potential 'looters' already working their way on to the scene and while law enforcement is doing what they can, having 'guns' may also be a 'necessary' thing to protect health and home. So, when a noted liberal publication such as The Los Angeles Times is reporting - "They are met with people who have guns..." - realize that all may not be, strictly, as is portrayed in the piece.

The point to the post was what I said; i.e., that 'evacuation orders' aren't universally complied with and, if you accept the responsibilities which go with your decision, people shouldn't have a 'problem' with the decision.

NPR actually 'went there' this afternoon... Dixie, Bootleg, Goose. How Wildfires Get Their Name ... opening the piece with...

Quote:
Natural disasters have names and labels. Hurricane names are selected from a predetermined list. Diseases, at one point often named for where they originated, now follow a specific set of naming guidelines. Wildfires get names too.

The Dixie Fire, California's second-largest wildfire in history, is named for the road where it started nearly four weeks ago. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, "Cal Fire," fires are often named for their geographic location. Nearby landmarks, like roads, lakes, rivers and mountains, can also become the fire's namesake.

"If a fire is called into the 911 center off of Main Street, this fire would be called the Main Fire," explains Cal Fire's Assistant Deputy Director Daniel Berlant in an informational video. "If a caller calls in and says, 'I'm at Monterey Park and there's a fire at the park,' dispatchers would likely name this fire either the Monterey Fire or the Park Fire."...
It's not a diatribe demanding a name change. But, it does represent a 'consciousness' or 'anticipation' of exactly what you are suggesting.
