Default Where can I shoot an air rifle in NorCal?

Hello, I don’t currently own an air rifles, but I’ve been wanting to get myself one and one for my 12 y/o son for a while.

The nearest place i know of to shoot a “real” gun is Ukiah area. Are there any locations closer to Petaluma area we could go target shoot? Or, do same rules and regulations apply for airguns?

Thanks

Generally, cities and counties restrict airguns much the same as they do firearms.

There is a Field Target club that shoots at Yolo Sportsmans every other month and also at Sac Valley. There's another club at United Sportsmans in Concord. They shoot FT and I believe they still shoot BR or silhouettes.

Really? I've been shooting bb guns in my garage for years. I had no idea, I mean no one can hear and it's completely safe but still didn't know I wasn't supposed to.

Heck when I was younger I used to shoot them in my bedroom at Star Wars toys (wish I didn't do that).

We shoot them in the garage. We just use a cardboard box with some old phone books on the back and in the front of the phone books crumbled up newspaper. Tape it closed and put a Target on it. Been doing that since I was a Cub scout.

Check the internet for a county shooting map. Here in San Diego I have found that I can shoot my .177 springer on my own property as I am on unincorporated land even though I'm 40 miles north of San Diego.

Your garage is a good place to start and nobody will even know unless you tell them.

Garage and a box full of phone books makes a good backstop.

Depends on your neighbors and how loud your air rifle is but backyards, garages and even in the house. Or better yet, just find a spot in the woods on the way to the coast. Avoid pot growers though, they're likely better armed than you!

Check you local regulations. There are still some rural cities that allow air rifles to be discharged within city limits and there are plenty of rural counties that allow you to do so in unincorporated areas.

That being said, if the air rifle is shooting under say 900 fps, it's likely safe to shoot indoors (provided you have a good backstop for it, I'd recommend high-density archery foam).

Best backstop bar none is a cardboard box filled with rubber mulch. I know for a fact that a .223 will only penetrate about 10"-12" at 50 yards. And it works great with broadheads if you're into archery! Just duct tape it as it gets worn out.

Looks like you can't shoot your air rifle in Petaluma.

While researching I found the below. Can someone tell me if I'm reading this correctly?

https://www.codepublishing.com/CA/Pe...aluma1056.html

Petaluma code states, "Except as otherwise provided in this chapter no person shall have in his possession within this city...any firearm, cannon, fireworks, gun, pistol, revolver, anvil, firecracker or explosive of similar nature, rifle, air rifle, airgun, BB gun or pellet gun or any instrument of any kind, character or description which throws or projects bullets or missiles of any kind to any distance by means of elastic force, air or any explosive substance"

Their exceptions allow "To the possession of such firearms for keeping at the place of residence or business of the person otherwise in lawful possession thereof or while traveling to or from a legal firing, shooting or target range or hunting ground".

To me, this seems to fly in the face of the 2A. They outright made possession illegal unless it's in your house or on the way to the range (unless you're LEO).

Sorry to 1/2 threadjack.

another way to extend the range is shoot from inside your garage out the back door with a target back stop set up in the yard, then your neighbors cant see it, something to do on a rainy day.

use water bottles with a little sand inside to add weight to keep them standing as mini bowling pin shoot.

San Leandro and Coyote Point have airgun competitions monthly. Coyote Point members can use the range for airguns Sat and Sunday from 10am-5pm.
