Easy, I'm happy for you to have made it all the way through the long and difficult hiring process and then making it through the academy. I told your class on the first day, not everyone was going to be there at the end. I'm glad that you are one of the few. You have a whole lot of challenges still ahead of you. Take what you learned and build from it. You are well on your way.
Freon, I post these here to give folks some info on open law enforcement jobs and to give them information to help them along the process. I don't get paid for recruiting, I'm just trying to help others join the law enforcement family. If a moderator would prefer that I stop, they just need to say the word and I will cease all future postings. Stay safe my leo brothers and sisters |

CaptMike,
Will there be more GSNs & DSOs being promoted in the near future or will they be waiting until February? Currently in my training we have 5 DSOs who were promoted. I know some of them from my time spent at Los Padrinos. How are these promoted individuals being selected? Are they being selected randomly? I know other DSOs with more seniority still waiting to get word. Thanks. |

Currently in Background for DPO I
Hello CaptMike (et al),
I received my background packet about a week and a half ago, I have completely filled out my Personal History Statement (PHS), meet with my investigator, and turned in all of my verifying documents (transcripts, credit report, DMV H-6 driving record, selective services, etc.). I was fingerprinted, had my social media website (Facebook) looked at by my investigator, and I filled out the questionnaire. My investigator informed me the backgrounds are moving at an accelerated pace. Many of my contacts in the Los Angeles County Probation Department have suggested while I am going through this process, I should visit a camp to see what the DPO I position is truly about. I know what the job description states and believe it is an accurate depiction of the job duties, but there is noting like seeing things first hand. Sir, would you concur with this and if so, would you have a suggestion as to what camp I should attempt to observe? Note to prospective candidates: Please be aware that when you make it to background, one of the first things your investigator will do, is go to their computer, ask you to sign onto any social media website you stated you belong to, and they will scrutinize your page. when this happened to me, it caught me off guard. However, I listed I belong to Facebook, and when I signed on, my investigator scanned my homepage. Although I was caught off guard, I was not worried because I do not have anything risqué or raunchy (nor illegal) listed on my page. So, a word to the wise make sure your social network pages are legit! |

Thats a great suggestion. As long as you have your banding letter to show them that you are in the process, you should be able to set up a visit. Just call the camp closest to you and ask to speak to the Supervisor. Let them know that you are in the process and that you have your banding letter from the department to proove it. Put in your request for a visit and if they are able, they will set one up for you. It really doesn't matter which camp you want to visit because they are all basically the same. I think the county paid for one set of plans and then reused them at all the camps. The only exception is the Challenger Memorial youth center in Lancaster. It was built in the 90's so the county bought a new set of plans. Otherwise all the other camps are the same design. Good luck.

Yes, I was planning on bringing verifying documents to the scheduled visit (for sure). Good luck to everyone going through the process! |

flyguyy: I am at the same stage you are in the process. I just turned in my packet and met with the investigator last week so hopefully we can keep in touch here and assist one another if possible. Also thanks for the suggestion about visiting a camp. Its' a great idea for getting a feel of what camp life is like. I have previously done an internship at Camp Rocky, but am now thinking of paying a visit to Challenger since I live in Lancaster. If you set something up let me know how it went.
Have you heard any word on how long it may take to have our poly and other steps scheduled? |

Congratulations on making it to background. I would love to "keep in touch" with you during the process. I will assist you in anyway I can. You are welcome for the suggestion, but like I said in my previous post, my Probation Department contacts suggested it to me. When I called Camp Paige and asked to speak to the director, I was told he was not in. I then informed the person who answered my call why I was calling (to set up a visit). I informed him I am a prospective candidate currently in background, and he told me I had to go through headquarters (Downey) and get clearance. However, I have yet to contact my investigator to get the clearance. If anyone can confirm if this is the proper procedure (before I bother my investigator), I would sincerely appreciate it. I do not know "exactly" how long it takes for the completion of the investigation. However, when I met with my BI, she said the background investigation department was moving at a very fast pace. Now, what that equates to, I do not know. dj1915, best of luck to you, and please keep in touch. Any insight you can give me would be much appreciated and well received. Have a good one! |

flyguyy: Sorry for taking so long to respond. So do you know if any of your references have been contacted? I believe the next scheduled academy is in early February so I'm hoping there is a chance we can make it into that one if all goes well.

Capt Mike,
Which curriculum would it be:Juvenile Corrections officer or Probation Officer? Like I previously stated I have completed all the exams for the DPO 1 process and I'am now waiting to hear if I get accepted into an academy next year, good luck to all this process is very lengthy. |

dj1915, I also apologize for the late reply. To answer your question, I do not believe any of my references have been contacted. Also, I actually contacted my BI today. She informed me that although she is attempting to move through the process quickly, the holiday season will inevitably hinder the process. She stated other departments taking time off for the holidays and either shutting down, or the people "covering" for the regular department workers aren't as knowledgeable. So, it appears to be a "hurry up and wait" type of situation. I did ask her if all goes well with my investigation, did I have a shot at making the February academy and she stated she did not know (which I understand). She said she is going to do what she can to expedite the process, but she is not at liberty to say what (if any) academy I may attend (again, which I totally understand). As far as the camp visit situation I brought up in a previous post, I am yet to go on a visit. Again, I am getting conflicting information regarding this issue. As I mentioned, when I phoned Camp Paige, the person informed me I would have to get "clearance" from HQ (which I interpreted to be my BI). However, when I asked my BI about this today (the purpose of my call to her), she stated she has no idea what clearance Camp Paige is referring to. So, what I am going to do is, I am going to re-call Camp Paige, and start all over. Anyone who might be able to "shed some light" on this issue, please chime in at your convenience. Thanks and good luck all! |

Update:
I have not posted in this forum in months but here is what happen with me. By early August 2013, I was completely done with all the process (psy exam. physical exam, poly, etc.) to become a DPO I. It took me about 3.5 months to complete the whole process. I have to say that I was a military veteran as well had earned a master's degree and I think that put me above the average applicant (according to my BI). Soon after completing everything, I was told that if I was hired, I was going to attend the DPO academy in OCT. However, also in August I received notice that I was selected to attend one of the Military Officer programs in the country and where I just graduated from a couple of weeks ago. Now, I do not reside in CA anymore but yesterday (12/24/13) I was contacted by the Probation Department to see if I was still interested in becoming a DPO because they want to start filling out the academy seats for next year. I will call back the Prob Dept on Monday to decline any further consideration from the department and I sincerely hope that one of the many folks in this forum gets that spot that was "offered" to me. I am now a proud Military Officer and I sincerely wish the best to you all in the journey of joining the LEO community. Very Respectfully, Naval60 Last edited by Naval60; 12-25-2013 at 7:00 PM.. |

Update:
Got a call today (12/30/13) from the Los Angeles County Probation Dept. to offer me the DPO I position with a academy starting date for 01/31/14. I declined the offer due to my new current career. Really hope somebody else from this forum gets the opportunity that I declined. |

Somebody will eventually get the spot. We are still 800 positions down. Congrats naval on your current career. Best wishes to you and good luck to the rest of the applicants going through the probation process.

They will start you off with the first online assessment which will most likely happen sometime in january. Then the rest of the process is the same as for DPO I as i have detailed in this forum. That includes the academy. Good luck

Next class for GSN DSO DPO I DPO II RT is in february. The next DPO II FIELD is in late march.
Having a federal security clearance will be a positive but it is not an automatic to get you hired. You still have to go through the entire process. I think that shooter back east at the navy ship yard still had a federal clearance. We still need to make sure all aspects of your life are stable currently. |

Hello everyone, I finished my final step back in November. Has anyone else finished the process or heard anything? I have not received anything regarding my status at the moment. I read the next class is in February. CaptMike if you are still in background and the expiration date on your eligibility list is rapidly approaching can you still be hired or do you have to reapply?

Hello, I am currently in the background process and my investigator stated that their are no areas of concern with my background and is receiving positive feedback from my references, neighbors, and previous employers. She also stated that she is almost done with the investigation and will then submit my packet to HR for them to determine to offer me the position. The information my background investigator provided about the next steps seems contrary to what I have read on the forum. I have not received any information regarding polygraph or the psych eval. Does this process described by my investigator seem common for applicants? The second area of concern is that I applied for the both the DPO I and DPO II treatment and counseling positions, tested, and interviewed for both concurrently. I received the background packet for DPO I, however I have not received any further information about the DPO II position. Is their a reason why I haven't received any further information regarding the DPO II position?

If you havent completed poly then that will come next. Your backgrounds for Dpo I and Dpo II are progressing concurrently. The only difference is that you will have to complete a separate oral interview for the Dpo II position.

Calico, yes they all will reopen again. They are currently processing several thousand applicants for the various positions. You just missed GSN about a month ago. It looks like they are reopening each positiin about every 4 or 5 months. Just be ready to apply because they open the apps and we receive several thousand and they shut it down within 3 or 4 days.
You can actually go to the hr.lacounty.gov website and build the online application. If you have your application already saved on the server, it is a simple and quick process to appky when they open. Ill post on here when they open but it would probably be quicker if you put in an interest request on the HR website. Good luck |

Question for those Out of State
I have a quick question for those who apply from out of state.
I applied for the DPOII Field position and took my exam in December of 2013. Due to me flying in from Cleveland, Ohio, I was interviewed on the spot as well even though my letter just stated I was sitting for an exam. I hadn't heard anything so I jumped the gun and called. I found out that I passed my written and now I am just waiting for the rest of my results. My question is this: How does the department handle those individuals who applied for these positions and live out of state? I see that several people had to come back multiple times during the month or over the course of a couple of months to complete their psych, poly, background...etc. Flying to California from Ohio is very expensive plus trying to factor in vacation time can be tricky with my job (Im currently a juve parole officer where I live). Thanks! -Nikki |

Good morning everyone,
I would like to say in disregard to all the negative comments, I truly value the feedback from CaptMike. I am done with my background process as well, hope to be receiving a call soon for DSO. This forum has positively guided me through the process and what to expect. |
