Hi, i think it's finally time to mount a scope on my mostly stock Ruger 10/22. It's getting tougher to use the factory original sights that came with the rifle.
I'd sure appreciate your recommendations with respect to scope rings. Also what is the consensus regarding the rail....maintain it or add a new rail? I don't compete with the rifle, i would just like to continue enjoying shooting little groups on paper and perhaps one day steel. I doubt i'd ever push it to 200 yards but it would be great to be able to shoot 100 yards. Thanks Before i forget, is there a way to make the rifle bolt stay open after the last shot. I have a little tab by the trigger that i can manually engage to lock the bolt open but was wondering if there was another option. |

I never had any problems with the rail supplied in the box with the gun but many people prefer a nicer one.
.22LR does not recoil much so most any rings will work. The Simmons 3x9x40 scope seems to be popular here on CG. Back in the day there was a bolt hold open kit but it required special mags to work. IIRC, the mags had a tab on the follower that stuck out and activated the kit's bolt stop.

Several options on the rail to fit the 4 tiny factory holes in the top of the receiver - the factory one, multiple picatinny type rails, and my personal preference is the one that is a "see through" riser/pic rail that allows you to continue to use the irons if you wish, mount the optic or red dot of your choice. About 8 bucks on ebay.
There was a "Bolt Stop" aftermarket setup, it replaced the existing bolt stop/release and needed special mags. I fiddled with one in a 10/22 Magnum, and wasn't able to get it all dialed in (might be because my Magnum is a custom build that can be finicky, but shoots oh so well). I do recommend the "auto bolt release" mod (still have to manually engage the stop, but a quick flick of the charging handle releases the bolt), it's easy with a dremel and instructions you can find online, if you don't want to just buy an already modified one. All my 10/22's have this mod, and it's cheap or free if you already have a dremel with a small grinder bit (I found a set of "chainsaw sharpener" bits that seem to work quite well). |

That's the old dovetail early type mount.
You will need a newer one unless you use rimfire dovetail rings.

thanks....
neighbor had an old set of rings, he refused my offer for payment..... so i left him a little something on the bench. i've been really fortunate, i've come to know some incredibly nice people in my life. Not sure i deserve them but i sure am grateful for their trust and friendship. looking forward to trying them out. perfect opportunity to give the old 10/22 a complete clean up. My recommendation is don’t do it. I mounted a scope on the one I got when I was a kid and it ended up marking the receiver. I wish I would’ve just bought a new cheap gun and kept my old one pristine.

I tried one of these and it was serviceable right up the point where the magnification adjustment busted. Design on that part ain't the best. But yeah lotta 10/22 and Simmons pairings out there.
