Interesting. They’re about the price of the Harbor Freight Jerry cans. Usually they’re $90 each. Smoking deal.

The Harbor Freight red metal gas cans are claimed by one YouTuber to be made by the one of the same companies that make modern NATO cans, so, Wavian? Either way, unlike most HF merch, these are made here in the States.

The difference is the HF cans have a round, screw spout and very little embossed labelling on the can. But the weld is recessed, the handle(s) are fully-welded and the can is coated internally. I have four the the red HF cans and keep one in the truck. I empty all of them every six months into my truck, refill 'em with 87 and mark the date/price on a piece of painters' tape, then place the remaining three in vented, covered storage.

I use a transfer pump to fuel the truck. No can spout issues.

I have 2 of the HF cans myself. Dig the robust construction (welds and inner coating etc). It is built in the same factory that the Wavian's are made-Latvia(?) and to NATO spec. Only non-spec part of the HF cans are the lack of the vent and the EPA spill-all-over nozzle. I got them a few months back with a 20% discount or about $40 each. I tested them with water and did the nozzle-mod to make it a bit easier to use-cut a few links off of the springs. If I have problems with it in use, I'll bring a funnel. Ain't the .gov grand?

Thanks for the tip. I'm done with plastic fuel cans. I bought 4 of the NATO cans back in 2014 and have never looked back. There doesn't seem to be anything you can do to make them leak or off-gas fuel odors. I've been waiting for a sale to pick up a few more cans so the timing here is perfect.

Since I wanted 4 cans but only two spouts, I found it was $4.00 cheaper to buy two cans with metal spout included and a 2-pack of cans without spouts rather than the 4-pack of cans plus two spouts.

Hate the plastic!

Just finished off all my 2020 canned gas, no additives or stabilizers. Runs all my equipment big & small, like the day it was pumped.

Not saying these are bad cans, just not Wavians which are considered by most to be the premier name in "NATO type" fuel cans.
Hate to disagree with you, but I ordered 4 of these a couple weeks ago (before the free shipping unfortunately) and mine clearly say Wavian on them.

Well, I stand corrected. The pics in the link don't show the stamp and the description doesn't mention anything about them being Wavian.

This is a great deal then!

Oddly, they are supposed to be “water” vessels. So I stored some H20 a few months, dang rusty film internally.

Kay, fuel only despite the color.

I like the Wavian cans I have but I haven’t made up my mind to buy more. Bought a pair of them plus the flexible spouts a few years back. Filled them up, stored in my garage for about six month, and then when I went to use them found the gaskets on all four spouts leaked. I provided my order to Wavian and they sent me the gaskets just for the “regular” spouts. I asked about the other pair and was told I had to buy them because it had “been awhile” and there was nothing else to it. They haven’t leaked on me since but I’m not overly impressed with them at this point.

The Wavians are my back country/“extra” cans at this point and some scepter and another brand are my “regular” cans for diesel/ethanol free/etc

While I have definitely experienced some Wavian leaks, it’s been nominal compared to my Israeli cans. Then I saw a vid about not letting the base rise above nozzle until you have to…..Now my leaks on all cans are minuscule. I’m just a wavian fan! And they seem to be the best bang for the $ at the moment.

Mine have been leak free lately (knock on wood) but if I get any slight leakage I’ll see how I’m pouring… maybe they are slightly finicky then.

Assuming they won’t leak like mine initially did; I do agree that they are the best bang for the buck.

I just rotated my gas for the 2nd time. 1st time the wavian cans leaked all over with the longer flexible spout. This time I took my time analyzing the situation and found the gasket from the long spout missing.

Ok, took the short spout completely apart and shortened it to get rid of the parts that make it useless. Then took a small piece of wood to absorb the pounding I did to make sure the spout locked securely on the can. This last step will become unnecessary once the new can paint gets scored a little.

Anyway, went from total disaster 1st time to almost perfection this time.

I've purchased from Roverparts in the past and some of the cans have been stamped Wavian and some have the Valpro logo. I believe Valpro is the parent company that makes the Wavian cans. I've used both for many years and see no difference in quality. I've also purchased Gelg from another vendor and they are good, but I don't feel quite as good as the Valpro or Wavian.

I've seen steel cans from Valpro and Midwest Can that are similar, but have the round nozzle. The NATO style spout is absolutely the best.

Roverparts is GTG, and whether you receive Wavian or Valpro, they are the best jerry cans out there. The free shipping makes this a very good deal. Order a spout or two and a couple extra gaskets while you're at it.

Thanks OP! I had already had some but ordered another 4-pack

I use them for emergency gas supply. Came in handy a couple years ago when TX had a rare "snowpocalypse" and everyone was stuck at home for 1-2 weeks

Ive used a red and green can for gas for years, no problems. I read the blue water cans did provide rusty water, but they look cool.

IIRC the wavianusa.com site says the metal cans are not for water. The inside is treated for fuel storage and will react if water is stored.

There's an explanation of the colors something like RED=gasoline, yellow= diesel, blue kerosene and OD green was to match the OD on NATO vehicles and generally gasoline.

If I remember correctly, the coating inside these Jerry cans aren’t made for water, but for fuel.

I'll pile on here with my good experience with these cans from Roverparts.

I off-road/overland/camp/whatever and used to run Scepter military fuel cans with replacement Viton gaskets for years. They were indestructible, but got tired of wrenching the dang caps on and off.

Picked up a couple of the NATO cans from Roverparts a few years ago to fit in my roof-mounted carrier. They don't leak and are super easy to use with their time-tested compression cap system. I do get one tiny dribble out of the goose-neck attachment at first, but once air starts venting, it's fine (I use a rag) when filling.

After a long Sierra trip where two cans got me back to a gas station on fumes, I picked up a second set and they are the same as the first set from a few years ago.

Buy and use with confidence! There's a reason the British ended up copying this fine German design from WWII and it became the NATO standard!

The flex nozzle and gas cap gasket are available on ebay. I have a German jerry can from the 80s that the gasket deteriorated.

I have two Canadian Scepter plastic GI cans that leak when pouring. I like the Jerry can much better.

Rotopax loses on the $/gal. They're crazy expensive and each 'can' is 1 gal, 2 gal or 4 gallons. The 2 gallon can is $90!!! Plus, you need their mounting hardware which drives up the cost as well.

And the Rotopax can cap is a beech to remove if you have hand issues like arthritis or thumb issues.
Lots of aftermarket companies now making wrenches specifically for removing those damned caps.

I have a 2 gal Roto for water. I had a specific place I needed to fit in my Cherokee for dog water. They are tough. But yeh pricey per gal. I think I paid around $60.

Edit: Rotopak site has the water (white) for $60. Dunno why the red is so much more.

Do those work for long term storage? If I were going to the desert for a weekend then yes those VP jugs are good.

But for everything else seems like nothing beats the Jerry can. Read the history. The original German design is without a doubt the perfect fuel can:
- Included lid & mouth are easy to operate and enable rapid filling
- Recessed joint between the halves reduce possibility of damage upon being dropped
- Triple handles allow several ways to carry
- Stackable
- Convenient volume
- Simple to manufacture
- Lockable

Jerry cans are a joy to use compared to the plastic POS units approved by CARB states.

Have a Wavian can and love it. Except for the nozzles. Bought this metal flex one listed from roverparts. Hope it's better. Definitely need extra gaskets on hand. I've replaced one so far in approx. 2 yrs of owning.

It's interesting that some have reported issues with the gaskets. I've had my original 4 cans since 2014 with no issues. I never let the fuel go longer than 3 months before rotating as that seems cheaper than adding fuel stabilizer. The gaskets on the can lid and the fuel spouts have all held up perfectly for 8 years now.

I know that the gaskets will fail at some point but just wanted to point out that their premature failure is not a universal experience. I don't know how long such gaskets should be expected to last but I should probably order a set of spares at some point.

What's "long term"?

I've had good luck with heavy gauge plastic. Just try to minimize the UV exposure. I've got Scepter(?) jerry can style plastic ones I've had for 30 years. Certainly, plastic won't hold up sharp objects and such, but proper "long term" storage shouldn't subject them to that.

I've had a Blitz can rust out from inside. Only needs a tiny amount of water sitting at the bottom. I dunno, maybe these have better internal coatings, but doesn't take much to fail.
