Fans of Pistol / Carbine in same chambering

Growing up as a kid watching westerns, I became a fan of having a lever action carbine chambered in the same round as a pistol. It seemed so logical and convenient. Decades later, I have acquired a few examples and they are a lot of fun at the range.

This Henry H001 matches well with a Ruger Wrangler. Both shoot the 22 short, long and long rifle.



Moving up a bit, here’s a Marlin 1894C and a Taurus 856 that share 38 Special and 38 Special +P ammo.



A 9mm pistol is a fine firearm out to 25 yards. From a carbine you can add another 100 yards to it.



Pistols and carbines chambered the same are a lot of fun and sure simplify taking gear to the range.

Now all you need is .357, 44mag, and 45 long colt. Oh and I think they make a 10mm combo. Nice collection. I have been looking at 22 pistols to go with the rifles. F+++ the roster.

When I bought my first press it was to save money because of the 2nd Iraq war increasing prices on 223. From then on it was all about economy of calibers. Since then I have expanded my collection but I do have: The cowboy set in .357. The modern set in 9mm. The 308 set-AR10,Ishapore,Savage 10FP,Garand and light hunting rifle. All my shotguns are in 12g. My 454 shoots 45colt which also can be shot out of my cap and ball Remington. Yes they were all planned and researched before purchase. I do have some one offs, a 1911 in .45, a 50DE and a .338 LM.

I have a Marlin 1894 SS in both .44 mag and .357 mag.
They are paired with S&W 687+4” and S&W 629 5”.
Some day I’ll get a Colt SAA in .357

I concur. It makes sense on many different levels. Ease of use, economy, possibly even safety, with less chances of putting the wrong type of cartridge in the wrong gun.
Also fewer types of ammunition to purchase, you're potentially buying a bigger bulk ammo purchases so you might get a better deal, even if you're reloading there are less components to buy.
Personally I like the .22 long rifle caliber combos in the revolver/ semi-auto rifle or pump gallery gun style ( John Moses Browning believed the pump / slide action was superior to the lever actions, at least of his day.) but I'm not going to kick a nice semi-auto handgun/ lever action out of the safe either.
And the next logical step up is the 357/ 38 Special combo. There I would go revolver and lever action.
Most gun folks have at least one 9 mm semi auto pistol and now they can have a matching caliber semi auto rifle in lots of different flavors from AR style to the Ruger 9 mm rifles or even a High Point rifle in 9mm if they're on an extreme budget.
And then the biggest step is if you're traveling through country with dangerous game you climb up the ladder to the big bores.

Of course one of the negatives your typical average handgun caliber rifles are they might not give you the long distance Reach Out And Touch something far away that a full rifle caliber chambering, with its larger case and aerodynamic projectile, specifically designed to go longer and be more accurate at distance, can.

I’m definitely a fan of this, although my only compliance with this is a Marlin 795 and Ruger 22/45 both in .22LR. And that combo was really by chance and not design.

I do have 9mm pistols and I would very much like to add a 9mm carbine at some point. That combo seems to be very logical.

And my ultimate desire is to have a revolver and lever gun both in .357/.38.

My only lever actions are in 30-30 and .444 Marlin so I don’t have a pistol to pair with them. I do, however, have a M1 Carbine that pairs with my Ruger Blackhawk in the same caliber.

This is a great thread but it only tells me I need more lever actions.

I like idea of pairing handgun/carbine too. I have 9mm, .357 and .41 paired so far. I would love to add either .45 ACP or 10mm in semi, preferably 10mm in something like Ruger PCC.

45Colt and .357 combos... What I really want now is a revolver to shoot 45Colt and 45ACP and that might be the last gun I ever buy . Being a single action guy, I keep looking for a Ruger Blackhawk but it has dual cylinders which I don't like, so I guess a Redhawk it is with moon clips. I know S&W made one but can't find one of those either.

For autoloading 22LR, there is the Ruger 10/22 and a Walther P22CA.

A pistol / carbine combo is the way to go.
Got a 10/22 and Buck Mark for fun plinking and even action pistol/steel challenge.

A Ruger PCC with Glock adapter and G17&34 to go with it. Love that this setup uses the same mags, but this causes very high ammo consumption

Then the more manual setup with a Henry X 357 with woodstock and 686+ & 27 to compliment it. These are a blast to shoot, but rate of fire is substantially slower than the semis - but these do pack more punch too.

Good to have a few of these options for proper range days

i guess my first rifle pistol companion was my 10/22 and an intertech sport 22 but the sport 22 only seemed to work with ramline magazines
22lr is tricky case cause isnt lr long rifle so its a rifle round that is used in a pistol not a pistol round used in a rifle


on one hand they are a fun range combo but in reality i want my rifle punching its weight

sure i have a 9mm glock and a rifle that uses the same glock magazines super fun

so many pistol rifle combos out there some use the same mags

The only pistol/revolver/carbine combinations I think make sense are .22lr, .44mag or .357mag and if they are manual actions like lever, pump, revolver and feed from internal magazines. Also notice these are rimmed cartridges. Also note magazine capacities of 6 to +10rds.

A 9mm carbine to "compliment" a 9mm pistol is stupid IMHO. Get a 9mm carbine just to plink with on its own. But dont think you have some kind of advantage because its "complimenting" a 9mm hangun you own. Thats just dumb.

It doesnt make sense to carry two DBM fed centerfire semiauto guns in the same cartridge with one being a pistol and the other a carbine. If you have 2 guns you should make the most of each "platform" with the carbine chambered in at least .223 to have a greater range.

Hell, I think a pistol in 9mm and a carbine in .22lr makes way more sense then both of them in 9mm.

Respectfully disagree. I believe 9mm is the most popular / most available round. To me, personally, a carbine option is very useful.

Without a doubt, 357/38. Survival, hunting small to deer sized game and self defense. Even snake shot for vermin.

I'm inclined to believe that you have the best answer (though sometimes I think 9mm should be higher). 357 has the advantage of chambering two different rounds, however, 38 SPC and 357 MAG

Too easy, .44mag. Its an awesome round. Very accurate and easy to load for. Almost no recoil out of a levergun and very powerful.

Charter arms has a pistol that doesn't require moon clips, but I think the majority of first gun buyers go 9mm semi-auto. That needs to be taken into account.

My point is not that a 9mm semiauto carbine by itself is pointless, its obviously not. But it is pointless if you are already packing a 9mm pistol. In that case why hobble yourself with a pistol round if you are carrying two DBM fed semiauto guns, one of them a carbine that potentially could feed from a +10rd magazine? Its just silly. In this case its better to chamber the carbine in a rifle round like .223 or .30.

The Ruger as a take-down has a number of good points. Using a Glock mag just makes it more useful.

Forget the 10mm Ruger PCC. It’s never going to happen. Same with one in 45acp. That blowback deadweight would be too big and heavy.

The PCC in .40 does exist (may not be currently available) and of course .40 Glocks abound.
