Default United Sportsmen (USI) in Concord shut down for time being UPDATE:Range Reopening

Not sure if this is the right forum. Just received a disturbing email.

Quote:
DAP Shooters and Range Officers,

A phone call from Steve McConnell informs me that, until further notice, the Action Pistol range, the Multipurpose range and the Rifle / Pistol ranges are all closed to shooting. This is due to the discovery of numerous bullets and fragments being found along the top of the ridge that is downrange from those ranges and a report of fragments being found in the vicinity of the church east of us. The USI staff will be working on a solution to this problem.

Iíll advise you of any changes.

USI is cheaper but traffic on Hwy 4 is a pain because of new road construction. Vasco Road can be a pain too but generally less so than Hwy 4. They just started doing some repaving on Vasco which is now also causing delays/backups.

The Safety Officers at Livermore were talking about how busy the range is now because of all the shooters going there from USI. Noticed a lot of new shooters there who had to fill out the form to get a waiver card and safety orientation to shoot there. Haven't been to Richmond range for awhile but I suspect they are also getting overflow from USI as well.

Just joined USI recently to engage in action shooting. Also got the "maintenance" closure email regarding the rifle/pistol range. The action pistol range wasn't mentioned but it doesn't surprise me if it's closed too; haven't been there since they stopped the Steel Challenge matches in July. Diablo Action Pistol shooters will have no choice but to go to Richmond for the time being.

Nothing has been said about the trap/skeet/5 stand ranges at USI. So, I assume they're still open. Will have to drop by on my way to/from Martinez (where I am also a member) to see if that's so in a week or so after I get back from FS.

BTW: For those of you who are not familiar w/the Livermore rifle/pistol range, although they charge more ($15) and have no LEO or other discounts, they will give you ALL of the extra full sized bullseye targets (the only one's they let you use there) that you need. They also have target centers for those of you who can manage to keep your rounds in the center.
I am not sure that Livermore restricts target use but they only provide the one target. Many people bring their own preferred targets.

We've brought our own targets at Livermore. No issues.

Don't know if they restrict people type of targets though.

Livermore does not allow targets that have humans on them, so no hostage targets, for example. You can shoot zombies and sillouette targets. If the targets are larger than the target holder, they need to be folded to fit so you don't inadvertently shoot the target frames. You can shoot pistol or rifle from any bench at any distance from 10 yards to 100 yards. There are preset target bases at 10, 25, 50 and 100 yards. About half the lanes also now have a base at 35 yards.

I think I've seen multi-center targets put up at Richmond & Concord as well.

Personally, I just like to shoot at one big dot in the middle.
I'm glad things have changed at Livermore. I've seen things there that would have given use a black eye if the wrong person seen them, and the RO didn't even care.

Richmond prohibits any dots other than at the single center point of the target.

That sucks. I just got an email saying it's "closed for maintenance". Sounds a little more involved than just simple maintenance

Hi Brian: Saw your email regarding the range from last year. You mentioned that you are interested in old military and old levers; I have a ton of that stuff if you are interested. I am in Pleasant Hill. Let me know your phone number and I can call and maybe set up a time when you could discuss what we have of interest between us.

That would be up over the hill , driving east down Evora Rd?

Have no idea and any speculation is just that.

But, I can confirm that they just sent an email to members noting that ranges are closed for emergency maintenance.

The stray round could have just as easily come from next door in Pittsburg....if you know what I mean. There is almost as much shooting going on there as there is in Oakland.

I'm sorry to hear that they are closed. I like to go to that range on occasion. Let's hope they open again soon.

Email I received today said the shotgun ranges were still open.

Might go out and do a couple of rounds of trap.

Based on the set up on both pistol and riffle, with their wood roofs and the increased RSOs they have, I'm gonna predict it's coming from action pistol.
Those guys are responsible and safety minded as they come but it's just wide open there.
That or like mentioned before, it's not even coming from the range.

Have you ever shot down there ?

I do and have for quite some time and the bullet ricochets are consistently flying over your head into the hill from the public range , go have a look on the roof of the classroom down there .

The only way for action pistol to get a bullet on top of or over that hill would be shots straight up in the air , which while that is possible , i have never heard of it nor witnessed it , ever.

If someone did do that, they are gone.... so for them to find 'numerous bullets and fragments ' i would suspect other than the action range.

Given that every round fired has an Safety/Range Officer watching the shooter, I'm betting not. Unless DAP has record of a bunch of shooters being DQ'd for putting a round over the berm.

I've only shot one match there, but I'll tell you that it would be obvious to the safety officer if a shooter cracked one off over the berm. The gun would have to be disturbingly elevated to achieve that from the action pistol range.

I just heard about this yesterday at the Livermore range.

Livermore used to be a 300 yd range. People would sometimes shoot over the hill. Because of this it was closed down years back.

Now it's a 100 yd range. They also lowered the roof in the stations and angled them down with a metal 6-8" flashing on top making it impossible to shoot over the hills.

I bet USI will have to do something similar.

There is always that possibility. Vengeful people toss pieces of bullets around to shut down range.

I didn't shoot hand guns. But was there every Sunday morning shooting rifle. Lot of bullet streaks in front of the 50 yard targets. Or could be from glancing off the top of the 50 yard berm. It will be interesting to see what the experts come up with.

I'll be the first to say it....

The bullet fragments have been planted by anti gunners with the goal of getting USI shut down.

There I said it.

CRRRRRAP. I was planning on taking my new to me LR308 out there Sunday and trying her out, as well as meeting up with a few fellow CG'ers for a "Baer meet and greet". Dangit.

I'm still driving up to Vacaville tomorrow to get my 308 ammo I scored from Atari

I agree!!!!

Or left overs from the thugs and gang bangers in "West Pittsburg" aka Gunpoint.

And I agree with what 7 Sprig said, having shot action pistol there myself, I do not see any rounds going UP and OVER the hill unless someone got slap crazy out of control, but the public range? That is possible any day of the week and twice on Sat's and Sundays.

Congratz again on the LR308 and the ammo score Skosh.

We'll have to reschedule the Les Baer meet & greet. I was really looking forward to it as was my wife.

Back on topic-Totally stinks. But, yeah, could've been any number of sources for the bullets to be where they wound up. Idiots at the range. Thugs. New Years Eve revellers. Thugs. Anti-Gun crowd checking some random lead around to stir the pot and get the local ranges shut down.

And +1 for Livermore Rod & Gun. Much better range with nice staff. I like their set up with the individual bays. Also, easier to police your own brass there.

Happy shooting and be safe y'all!

I have a feeling it's this. I work for the property owner to the east of the range. I have never heard a bullet wiz by or seen any dead cows. Now the old Fairfield police range that's another story.

Tried at Fresno Rifle and Pistol some time back. The problem is that they planted complete cartridges rather than bullets, and the location were planted was 6 MILES from the range.

^^^ That's one of the things they tried at Inland Empire Fish and Game before they finally played the "contaminated environment" card.

It must be the action pistol shooter. The guys that are highly skilled shooters that have to take a class to shoot as well as a practical test. And then when they shoot have 2 RO's watching there every move and every shot. It could not be the shooters at the static line, that all the experience they have is what they got from the sales rep when they bought their gun and the 5 minute lecture to get a purple card. They're all expert marksman. All the holes in the roof at the pistol/rifle range must have been from stray round the reckless AP shooters.

I blame the Coast Gaurd. Have you ever seen them practice. WOW. If I'm not mistaken they were responsible for the fire on the hill side. I was waiting for the coast guard to finish so I could practice when I heard "draw and shoot 3 times" bang bang bang "YOU SHOT 3 TIMES. THERE ARE 2 HOLES IN YOUR TARGET. WHERE DID THE THIRD ROUND GO"

Bullet fragments? The city of Bay Point? This all sounds like too much of a coincidence.
