Default Ruger American Ranch

Any opinions compared to others, like the Savage or Rem?

I'm looking into getting a .223 bolt action.

Good question, that’d probably be more convenient. I’m somewhat new in the rifle world, so I’m open to suggestions and comments.

I figured they take AR mags. Though I believe some have those 5 rd mags?

They're fine. Mine is in x39 Russian. The stock rubs the barrel a little on one side. I wasn't expecting a tack driver.
Trigger is adjustable down to 3lbs or so, lower with an mcarbo spring.

I have one in 7.62x39 as well. I'm impressed with it actually. Fun plinker. I took sand paper to my stock and free floated the barrel. As mentioned before the fore end on the stock rubs the barrel so I opened it up. I have yet to shoot it since I have done this. The group pictured is at 100 yards with tulammo. I also have the predator model in .223 that takes AR mags. Also a fairly accurate rifle. For a plinker at a good price you can't go wrong.

What’s a fair price used for the .223 models and 7.62x39?

I would not pay more than 300 depending on model and accessories

That’s about right. I saw one on the marketplace for $480 and figured that was steep.

I can tell you there's not alot of stock options for Americans using mini 30 or ar mags. Maybe Boyd's in couple years.

The orignial RARR's took only a 5 round magazine and by the way are proofed for 5.56, not just .223. I got one for $319 and love it. Would I have bought one that took AR mags for $459 instead? Probably, but they weren't available when I got mine.

It is more than accurate enough for me. I've developed a 1MOA load using 26.3g 748 55g fmjbt's from 223bulkbullets.com. About as cheap as you can get at 16 cents a shot using a $30 scope.

100 yard group off sandbags shown above. 2800 fps average @ 10'

I have a Savage Axis 2 in .223, and the Ruger American in 7.62X39.

I have relieved the barrel channel on both. I enjoy shooting both. They both will shoot 2' 5 shot groups at 100 yards with the lowest cost steel case ammo. The Axis will do 1" 5 shot groups with high quality ammo.

The Ruger action seems rougher to me, yet it always cycles rounds. The axis is much smoother, but it often will give me troubles cycling, more so with steel case ammo.

I enjoy both and don't have any regrets about either purchase. The Axis 2 cost me $400 with a Weaver 3x9 scope (which is now on the Ruger) and the Ruger cost me $425.

The Axis 2 came with simple 2 piece scope mounts which I needed to replace with a rail when I switched optics. The Ruger came with a rail which is easier to use.

I have the RAR compact 223. Love it. I replaced the stock with a Boyd’s thumbhole. After a little (more than a little actually) sanding and such, it fits and it’s a great little shooter. However, I cannot get 55 grain bullets to group at all. I shot federal American eagle 55fmj out of it and it was like 3-4” at best. Of course, it’s 223 not 556 which might have been a problem. It loves 62-68 grain bullets. I can get 1” and under easily with it. I use 23.5 gr IMR4895 with a 62 and 22.5 with a 68. But even with good Hornady 55gr bullets, it wouldn’t group well at all. Dunno why.

I am really interested in the ranch in 556. I like the shorter barrel. The predator barrel is 22”. Both take AR mags.

Maybe they’ll make a hunter model in 223 to match the new ones in 6.5 and 308. That would be awesome.
