I am building a longer distance AR10 308 rifle. I?m having the upper built by CompassLake engineering out of Florida using an aero precision upper and a Krieger barrel.
I?m matching it to a Aero Precision lower. My question is what scopes in the mid/higher price range would you recommend going out to say 600 yards? And why? Oh, I think I?m leaning towards a first focal plane type scope. As a side note, I wanted an adjustable trigger, so my research led me to https://www.elftactical.com. I?m not at all affiliated with these guys but their customer service is excellent. I messed up a screw and without hesitation they sent me replacements on their dime. I like the way their trigger screws into the side of the receiver instead of using pins (their match trigger)- there is no movement at all. I still need to test the adjustment feature so cannot talk about that part. |

CLE makes some good uppers. Lots of options in the mid to higher price range scopes. Around $700: Vortex Viper PST Gen II, Burris XTR, etc.
I use the Vortex 3-15 on my Aero M5, here on the 600yd line shooting NRA Tactical Rifle division. ![]() |

I've been happy with this for many years:

I love how some associate caliber with magnification.
Caliber has noting to do with it. It's the shooters ability, the size of the target, and the expected level of precision. Sure if you want to stick with 1970's thought process go right ahead. But for me the bare minimum is a 5-25x of a good quality scope. Vortex, Night Force, Leupold. |

The arguments shouldn't be about magnification or zoom ratios, but about glass quality, and most importantly, the turret reliability/repeatability.
600yds is "midrange", not long-range (at least if we go by NRA competition standards). However, you still have to consider the constant dialing of elevation, whether it's for NRA and PRS competition or casual fun. |

If you insist on spending a lot of money, you can get a Schmidt & Bender PMII for that.
If you're going to use it mostly at the range, an LPVO with a 24mm objective is adequate. Primary Arms has a PL (Platinum) 1-8 FFP for $1500. Those usually have Japanese glass. I have their SL (Silver) 1-6 FFP that has glass from china or Philippines. They go for $400. All the Primary Arms are usually available with various ACSS reticles. |

3k you will be stuck in mid tier scope. take a look of ziess s3, Gen 3 razor, leupold mk5, steiners T6xi, nightforce 25x F1. none of these are using european glass

You guys seem to go higher budget than me, but just to share after my white oak 5.56 rifle came in I was a little short on cash so I bought a 4-14x Primary arms FFP scope for like $225 with the idea it would allow me to shoot the rifle until I got a “good” scope for it later on down the road. I really like the scope and have stuck with it. Of course I never shoot past 400 yards so I don’t know if super high end glass is a mandate for longer distance

I have a similar setup to yours, I mounted a Leupold VX5 3-15, good glass for the price, very bright. Ended up going with a Criterion barrel for mine though, with Spikes guts for the upper and lower.

Thanks for all the input and pm’s. I pulled the trigger on the NightForce ATACR 5-25. It’s on the way to meet its new soulmate (AR10 upper)

No but they have to be better than anything priced in it's range. and if it's not, It's Brownell's best customer service around. I will be getting two or more soon for a few rifles though.

![]() Agreed though spend your money on glass quality first then worry about mag range |

It's funny how nervous people get the first time they move from the comfort of the 100-yard bench at the public range...

What more funny is to watch a bunch of LEO's and former service members show up at 216 and get their zeros dialed in and then dig a ditch in the hill at 1000 Yards. Oh and Katalina made a first shot hit and then proceeded to do that a half dozen or more times in a row. It's fun to out shoot someone that thinks their a bad arse. It's hilarious when your daughter out shoots them.

OpticPlanet always has deals. I recently bought a Vortex strikefireii red dot 1-4 24 for under 160 shipped. Don’t plan on shooting that far
