Default CCW Insurance comparison chart

Found this pretty good in comparing insurance companies.

Read carefly. For example, Second Call's liability coverage is $50000 per claim and $300000 total. Unless you expect many claims, the policy is unlikely to ever pay its limits.

GREAT find, thanks OP. Pretty much solidified my choice with CCW Safe with the exception of no civil damages which gives me a LOT of pause being here in CA. Think I might have to consider more coverage or changing my provider all together. Interesting that the plans that includes it are $500 a year min. USCCA seems to be the only other one worth considering imo.

A couple of those really suck! LOW coverage! Criminal defense fees up to $150k? They should be ashamed of themselves. And NRA is reimburse not upfront? Worthless.

I haven't the time to review the accuracy of that chart, but one thing is misleading. Just looking at details of the NRA policy the web site says:

Quote:
Instant access to payments for bail, bonds, legal retainer fees, and legal referrals.
I would have to read the policy language to say better what is meant by "instant access", but it isn't clear that it is reimbursement.

One thing to watch out for with any plan is what happens if you plead or are are found guilty upon trial of any crime. The last I looked one of the most popular plans wouldn't pay anything. Read the details of the actual policy before buying.

I agree CCW Safe and USCCA seem to be the best choices bases on that chart. If you have assets, then I think you have to nut up and get USCCA for the civil liability coverage.

I had an interesting chat with a customer of mine who is a State Farm agent, he said they offer CCW coverage... haven't got into detail yet what that actually means as I have AAA and not State Farm on my property.

Default Carry Guard

I just got off the phone with Lockton Affinity NRA/Carry Guard and was told:

"State of California does not allow us to pay up front for bail and for attorney retainer." Nothing upfront allowed by California law.

I talked to Carry Guard the other day and they said to me "California will not allow us to pay any legal fees, bail, etc., until after adjudication of the case." So you are correct "no up front fees." Too bad they did not tell me that last year when I purchased the policy.

I have the ultimate $499 plan. How do I fee about the attorney thing? I feel they probably have a better line on a good SD lawyer than I do. They have a track record of successfully defending a SD murder charge and it's in their best interest to get you off so they are less likely to pay civil damages.

Let's pray to God this is never an issue.

Ok, thank you. I may do the Defender Plan and add on Civil Liability of $1 million, which, nicely, is for damages only and is over and above the cost of the civil litigation. $179 + $220 = $399. I need to look at the Ultimate Plan again, but I think I didn't choose it is because I do not have a spouse who needs coverage. Thanks again.

Since I researched this recently I learned that for $220 you can add Civil Protection for $1 million, which is over and above the litigation part of a civil trial. Hope this helps.

It comes with double the bail coverage as well. Yeah I might be able to save $40 or $50 if I did the defender + the add-ons, but I just feel that additional few bucks is worth it for their best policy.

I heard this issue was specific to NRA Carry Guard (and I believe 1 other provider) at an NRA Members Council Meeting. I believe USCCA, CCWSafe and/or ACLDN are not impacted due to the way they are structured as not insurance companies.

Be advised that Assembly Bill 1602, if passed, would not allow these types of policies in California.

Not a lawyer, but it would seem to me that this could open up a "Class Action" lawsuit for "Civil Rights" violations.

We have a Constitutional right to have legal counsel, denying us legal insurance would affording a legal defense impossible for most people.

Notre, Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network is not an insurance program, so it cannot be fairly compared with insurance programs.

ACLDN, is a group of CCW holders that pool a portion of their yearly dues for defense AND give yearly DVD training and monthly newsletters to inform it's members to prevent CCW related problems.

just joined uscca as elite w/ spouse... dropped carry guard and told them to get lost. Carry Guard would not clarify their Cali status and also wouldn't refund my unused time on my policy.. classy.

Seems I would narrow the gap down between the carriers that allow me to choose my own attorney

FWIW I listen to CCW Safe's podcast (and am a member of CCW Safe) and they said they highly recommend using a lawyer they choose but if you want to use your own lawyer they will consider it. I believe they said they look into your lawyers history and if it looks good they will work with them.
Can always call CCW Safe and confirm however.

As an aside, I have emailed most of these "insurance" carriers and asked them to include "red flag" legal coverage. I would gladly pay extra. Please help by sending similar emails, with enough demand, one of them will eventually offer it.

Attorney Andrew Branca chose CCWSAFE for his own legal protection. That is a pretty solid endorsement.

Not sure how long the code is good for, but you can save 10% on a membership with code LOSD10

What about Firearms Legal Protection on this chart? Other than Civil Damages, it seems to rank up there with CCW Safe with regards to other criteria?

This is going to be my next read. As much as I hate Insurance & the whole concept of it - that is given how much we pay and never really call upon it - I'm going to look into it for my CCW.

Why anyone is wasting their time doing comparisons is beyond me?

I have both CCWSAFE as well as USCCA at the highest coverage levels. I sleep better at night having both especially being in California. Spend the money and get both. It is only expensive until you need it!
