Question about turning targets in HCMP:

Are the par times listed the times that the target is 90 degrees to the line or are they the times from the beginning to the end of the of the turn?

There's no bonus for speed. Accuracy (points) within the allotted time is what makes your score.

Neither...

The time is from start, until the targets are partially turned away from you at 45 degrees.

It sounds like an insignificant difference, but it most definitely is not. I practiced for a year on static targets using a shot timer to validate that my shots were within par. I could 'easily' shoot -60 to -80 or so. Then I took the actual test for the first time and I think I shot -200. I got into the -100 range pretty quickly once I learned what a difference that half a tenth makes (+/- maybe a quarter tenth)

Also, sometimes the targets turn freaky fast for no explainable reason. It seams to happen at least a couple times per day when running them all day.

Basically, unless you are shooting at the dead center of the target, the target is shrinking horizontally the instant the turn begins. This is especially problematic for Headshots, Hostage Takers and Odd Angles

You can use your own handloads. It's also the only class where you're allowed to collect your brass.

I was in a slower class and two buddies pulled out their Labradars at the start of class to chrono the loads they made the night before.

Okay this sounds good. For ammo inspection do you just bring your hand loads and let them inspect them like regular ammo?

Got back from 2 Day Handgun skill Builder on Sat. Took my son (his second class). His first class he shot 6 down and cleared the malfunctions, but wasn’t using concealment, so only got a Certificate of Achievement.

This time on turning targets, he shot 25 down and cleared the malfunctions. Got his Graduate! So now it’s off to Tactical for him and me next. I’ve taken it, but he hasn’t.

Got my 5th DG in HG. I know I’m not fast enough for HGCM.

Weather was beautiful but cold.

Pro-shop has all kinds of holsters, if you are LEFT HANDED. Hardly anything for righties.

Stayed at Silverton Casino in Vegas. Like it much better than Pahrump but there is construction on the highway to Pahrump, so took a little longer than normal.

All in all a great two days with the boy.

First, congrats to your son.

As far as HCMP, few people will achieve HCM certification but the journey is what it is about. You will learn a great deal about your shooting and your gun in that class. I recommend everyone take it at least one. I usually opens up a whole new world for people to consider. Takes you from the UI stage to CI stage on some of your shooting skills and pursuits. It also tends to be a bit humbling.

Don't worry about that. There are guys in that course that weren't that fast, but they were accurate shooters. I'm fast enough, but not an accurate enough shooter.

Take the course to further develop your skills.

1. is it worth it?
2. Do they charge you any fees for the privates (other than what you paid for your membership)?
3. Can you tell them what course you’d like to work on for the private?
4. Can they administer tests during the private lessons? (I.e. 4 day def handgun course test, or 4 day rifle, or HCM, etc.)
5. If a lot of people have the private memberships, why do they go to the group classes? Can’t you get a lot more accomplished at your own pace?
6. What am I missing? Words of wisdom?

For me, it is. I can train on the days I choose including weekends. I avoid missing work and loss of income. This has quickly offset the membership cost.

No. Still have the annual background check of course.

Yes.

They had a president1 upgrade last year for $975. That had private training in the membership.

There was an upgrade offer for 1President for $795 last year which quickly went up to $895 when I purchased it. It also included $895 Iggy Bucks.

I think some details are being left out... I have one of the first president memberships offered a few years ago with up to 4 guests included, and I've MORE than made my money back on what I get with mine.

Fees & Worth:
So, there are no extra fees, but I have straight up given $100+ worth of ammo as a tip to a really good private instructor, or donated to a cause they believe in, as I did with Ken during private Precision Rifle. They appreciate it, and it's STILL worth any additional cost. Don't be a stingy bastard.

Courses:
You can mix and match if you want- do handgun in the morning and rifle in the afternoon if you so choose. Different instructors will also push you in different ways. As long as the what you're doing is in the 'spirit' of the courses offered, you can almost do anything. We ran several sim bay scenarios in our private handgun last trip. Instructor gave us the option on what WE wanted to do. It's awesome.

If you're a late riser, schedule your private to begin at 9am. It's not a problem.

Skills tests:
Not only can they administer skills tests, but you can take it multiple times. Still working on a DG in shotgun and barely missed the mark? Run it again. I took a group of friends to 4 days of private HG & Rifle and during the last day of rifle two friends were soooo close after our test, they ran it again & the only female out with us that day got her Rifle DG on the second go, but one buddy still barely missed it. So they ran it AGAIN and he got it!

Having to go back to FS just to take a skill builder (or another full 4 day) and get only one chance at a test would be a bummer. Being able to take the test more than once in an afternoon is awesome! If the instructor sees you're not even close I'm sure you'd be going back to working on certain skills instead of running the test again, however.

Group classes:
It's still cool meeting people and making friends, plus doing the group man on man shooting is always a blast. When I took a group of family members we all did a 4 day together and I think doing it over the course of 4 days helped the skills 'sink' in for the individuals that took longer to grasp the concepts. If a friend wanted to go to a 4 day, I would still attend with them since it has its merits.

Doing an advanced class in a group is humbling as well when you see how good some folks can shoot!

However, in the private classes, It's awesome being able to go at a blistering pace when the instructor can see you guys are ready for more.

I've got a friend that really doesn't like to socialize and after going to a private class with me, she bought her own private membership as soon as it was offered!

Added Thoughts:
I personally think I've gotten more from my private membership than I EVER could have without.

With more and more people getting them, scheduling will be more difficult. When they were first available, I only had to schedule a month out. Now I schedule a full 6 months out to ensure I get the dates I want.

The private training thingie sounds like a good value... I will wait how my wife and I go through the 4DDHG this coming week (kids will be in the 4-day camp) before deciding to get it or not. If she begins to like guns because of 4DDHG, we may get it (she is a complete beginner). Would see...

As for me, this will be my 2nd Front Sight. The last time was in 2016 when I took the 2DDHG when I first started out. We are all packed for Thursday morning departure to Pahrump. Looking forward to how it goes!

However, I still haven't decided whether to go with the full-sized HK USP Expert 45 or the compact G19 Gen 3. As the wife chose to go with my G34 (with Truglo TFX Pro), I can go with the G19 - lighter recoil, but crappy sights (still stock) and not much grip (I have big hands). Or, go with the USP, which has more precise sights, is full-sized; but more recoil.

Oh well... Just wanting to have fun...

If you're going to be taking separate classes, especially in the back ranges, consider getting those FRS radios for each member to communicate and coordinate especially at lunch time and after class. Cellphone reception can be very bad at Front Sight.

How your wife likes the class and the overall trip will determine how often you'll be going to be coming back as a family. Best wishes for you guys!

I hear that a lot and we joke about it on the range how FS doesn't offer family counseling but its really up to the pair.

You two know each other best.
If you think coaching or providing feedback could be seen as you constantly criticizing then it's probably best to not pair up together as one or both of you will be frustrated and then stop learning techniques.
Is your wife comfortable partnering up with a total stranger?
there's pros and cons either way so my recommendation is partner up the first day since that's mainly all about safety and how to properly coach. IF you see yourselves getting on each other's nerves you can always change partners the next day.
