Default Turpentine: should I drink it?

Not quite a Survival & Prep topic, but I figured this might be the spot to ask about folk remedies.

So, I was watching videos of people using old techniques to harvest pine resin and process it in a rudimentary still. Pretty cool!

It sent me down the rabbit hole researching turpentine and it’s uses. Apparently, alongside being a used as a solvent, turpentine has a long history of being used as an alleged, remedy for all sorts of ailments when ingested.

I see recently some Hollywood personality got blasted for mentioning turpentine in this capacity. That noise aside...

What do you know about it? Should I drink it?? Or stick to my Hoppe #9?

" Looks like water,
tastes like wine,
oh my gosh
it's turpentine. "

I'm not sure how long ago I heard that but it was before gunpowder was invented.

People used to use leeches and perform bloodletting to remedy all sorts of ailments too.
Personally I'd stick to Hoppe's No.9.

Life expectancy used to be pretty low for reasons like drinking turpentine, etc.

Do you mean to tell me all the cigarettes I’ve been smoking during my bloodletting sessions have NOT been improving my lung capacity?

How double dare you.

That actually sounds...rather good! If I still drank alcohol, I’d probably enjoy that!

The Romans used to consume drinks cooked in lead vessels to impart a sweet flavor. Talk about an artificial sweetener!

Turpentine was good for washing down lead based paint chips...

They still do use leeches. When I worked in a Surgical Trauma ICU I had two patients I used them on. One patient who gut off his fingers in a shop accident. Another guy who had a piece of his trapezius muscle grafted to his jaw. The leeches were placed on the graft to promote blood flow and prevent clotting since their saliva is a natural anticoagulant. Was interesting when you had to retrieve them and a couple of them would fall off the would and you had to go searching for them. They'd be somewhere in the bed, attached to some other part of the patient's body, etc. Fun times!

I have heard of it used topically on minor injuries.

I think I recall Watkins products using it as an ingredient in their salve.

Google turpentine medicinal.

Be advised that hardware store turpentine may have contaminants not found in "medicinal" turpentine.

Old farmers used kerosene for all kind of injury--sore muscles to dog bites.
I don't think they drank it. Internal problems were treated with castor oil.

Have had much of this stuff. I love it.

Hell, I quit drinking ~3 years ago & I'd have a glass of this right now if I happened across some.

It definitely smells & tastes like pine sap.....weird, but good.

Default I do bloodletting every 3 months too!

Who says there is no bloodletting in modern times? I visit the Bloodmobile to drain off a pint every so many months. Word is that it gets rid of tired blood and boosts your Testosterone. The old doctors back a 100 years ago were on to something!

I have an old bottle of "medical turpentine" I found while cleaning a basement. But radium used to be seen as healthy as others have mentioned. I'd make sure you have good medical insurance before you try it. Probably a good way to catch a 51-50

The OP must be a relative of the lady in AZ, who probably poisoned her husband with the fish tank cleaner.
