Marlin 795 DIProducts Inc trigger guard group installation instructions

I recently had the opportunity to install a new DIProducts Inc trigger guard and trigger in my Marlin 795. I found these products to be very well made and the vendor company to be great to work with including attention to special requests and fast shipping.

In preparing to make the installation I was disappointed to find that there was not a lot of good information - videos, schematics, thorough written descriptions of the process - to work from. Likewise, I found that the instructions accompanying the parts to be minimalistic and in my opinion in need of correction, clarification and/or expansion in a few areas.

Consequently, the following is my attempt to update the installation instructions for a DIProducts Inc trigger guard and trigger. (Note: please note that this is what worked for me and your installation experience may differ. Please do your own research regarding this installation in that this description has not been verified by a competent gunsmith and I take no legal responsibility for its accuracy and/or your installation.)

To begin with I would recommend the viewing the photos and annotations for the "Marlin 795 Trigger Assembly by readysetgo805", which are excellent:

You will especially need to understand the disassembly portion.

It is also of note that you should pay attention to what is described as being viewed from the left side up or viewed from the right side up.

Parts to pay attention to are:

A - trigger guard
B - safety button
B1 - safety detent
B2 - safety spring
B3 - safety pin
C - trigger
C1 - rear trigger pin and/or hole
C2 - forward trigger pin and/or hole
C3 - trigger spring

After becoming conversant with the parts and their orientation you are ready to begin the installation. The following is a modified version of the DIProducts Inc instructions.


TOOLS NEEDED:

1/16" punch
3/32" punch
Safety pin, paper clip or small probe/punch
Hex/Allen key set
Gunsmith or jeweler's hammer
Needle nose pliers (may or may not be needed)
Plastic baggy
Flashlight, if light is needed to see threading, etc


TRIGGER GUARD INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

All work or modifications to any firearms should ALWAYS be performed by a competent, qualified gunsmith. Please follow all NRA safety rules beginning with verification that the rifle being worked on is unloaded.

Removal of the original Marlin 795 plastic trigger guard:
1.) remove both the front (short) and rear (long) trigger guard screws from the bottom of the rifle.
2.) Lift the original plastic trigger guard out from the bottom of the stock. Note how the trigger guard (A) looks or take pictures of the left, right and top sides to help you remember general placement of parts.
3.) Remove the following parts with the trigger guard placed in a plastic bag (to retain and keep any springs or other parts from flying away):
- Safety removal: drive out the safety pin (B3) FROM LEFT TO RIGHT using a 1/16" punch. (Note: you can hammer from the exterior through the baggy.) Once the pin is removed the safety spring (B2) and safety detent (B1) will come out when the trigger guard is turned upside down in the plastic bag. (Note: you will reuse the safety spring (B2) and the safety detent (B1). However, the pin will be replaced with newly supplied parts.)
- Rear Trigger Guard Pin - with the left side up, remove the rear trigger guard pin (C1) from LEFT TO RIGHT using a 1/16" punch. (Note: removal of this pin should remove tension from the trigger spring (C3). Also, note that the pin will be replaced with newly supplied parts.)
- Forward Trigger Guard Pin - with the right side up, remove the front trigger guard pin (C2) from RIGHT TO LEFT using a 3/32" punch. Removal of this pin will allow the trigger (C) and trigger spring (C3) to be removed. (Note: the trigger spring (C3) will be reused but the trigger (C) will be replaced with newly supplied parts.)

Installation of the Replacement DIProducts Inc metal Trigger Guard and Trigger Kit Assembly Parts
A.) Take a moment to look at the small pin/screws and their sizes that are supplied as new parts.
B.) Slide the new 3/8" wide Target Trigger (new C) into the new trigger guard (new A) and align the front or forward hole in the trigger with the front or forward hole (C2) in the trigger guard. Insert the newly supplied trigger guard pin (the largest pin in the kit with screw threads on one end) through the C2 hole (from the side that has the threading in it) about halfway through the trigger. With the top of the wide trigger tipped back, place the previously removed and saved trigger spring (C3) into the new trigger guard housing (new A) with the smaller straight leg of the spring pointing toward the front of the trigger guard and the 90 degree rear facing portion of the spring inserted into the hole in the middle of the trigger face. Next put the trigger assembly partially back into the plastic bag (to keep any parts from flying away) and push the newly supplied large pin the rest of the way through side of the trigger guard, through the center of the trigger spring, and thread it in until the head is just below the surface of the trigger guard (new A), but not so far that it protrudes from the other side of the guard. (Note: you can apply a small amount of purple or very small amount of blue LocTite, if desired.)
C.) Pivot the top of the new Wide Target Trigger until the hole in the top-side of the trigger lines up with the rear trigger hole (C1). (Note: this step can be done outside of the plastic bag.) Slide one of the newly supplied trigger guard pins through the threaded side of the hole and thread it in until the head is just below the surface of the trigger guard, but not so far that it protrudes from the other side of the guard. (Note: you can apply a small amount of purple or very small amount of blue LocTite, if desired.)

D.) After you have installed the new trigger (new C) into the trigger guard (new A), apply a small amount of amount of purple or very small amount of blue LocTite to the small set screw that is either pre-installed in the trigger or a new one that has been supplied for this purpose. Thread this small screw into the trigger until it just starts to protrude out of the other (muzzle facing) side of the trigger hump.

FUNCTION CHECK – before you move on, check the tension of the trigger. There should be resistance when you pull back on the trigger. The trigger should move back and forth freely and smoothly.

E.) Reinstall the safety button (B) into the trigger guard (new A) housing from RIGHT TO LEFT inserting the red banded end first. (Note: If you do not put the safety button in first, then the safety detent and spring will fall through the housing and they will not be properly held in place.) Next, while holding the trigger guard upright, reinstall the safety detent (B1) into the small hole above the safety button with the "pointy-end" up and then install the safety spring (B2) on top of the detent. Place a small amount of purple or very small VERY SMALL amount of blue LocTite on the threads of the last newly supplied pin. Place the trigger guard group into a plastic bag, depress the spring with a tool (small punch, paper clip, safety pin, etc.) and push the new pin SIDEWAYS through the threaded side of the hole and thread it in until the head is just below the surface of the trigger guard, but not so far that it protrudes from the other side of the guard.

SAFETY CHECK – After installing the safety assembly, check to see that it operates properly. With the safety “on”, the trigger should NOT move rearward. With the safety off, the trigger should move freely/smoothly back and forward. ASSURING THE RIFLE IS UNLOADED, check it again when you install the completed trigger assembly back into the rifle.

INSTALLING THE NEW TRIGGER GAURD GROUP BACK INTO THE STOCK
a.) Reinstall the newly assembled trigger guard group into the bottom of the rifle over the "Last Shot Hold Open" lever, if so equipped. Make sure the trigger guard group slides into and ends up evenly in the slot opening by: starting the front end into the stock, pushing forward and then down into the back of the stock. (Note: in some stocks the inletting may be a bit loose so you may wish to push the action to the front or rear. Do this each time you remove the trigger guard assembly (or action for cleaning) or when you adjust the top trigger screw so that everything will line up the same way every time.)
b.) Reinstall both the front (short) and rear (long) trigger guard screws from the bottom of the rifle.
c.) Insert "snap-caps" into the rifle chamber. Using the snap-cap, check the trigger for “pre-travel” or play. If it is excessive, remove the trigger guard assembly and adjust the small screw about 1/8 turn in. Repeat this adjustment step until the trigger fails to “re-set” and then back the screw out about 1/8 turn. Reinstall the trigger guard assembly and retest with the snap cap.
d.) Let the trigger guard assembly/rifle set for 24 hours to let the LocTite set-up.
