One of the easiest CCW's to acquire. Did the video, sent the application and check, got my non-res AZ CCW.

In reality, getting a Utah, or AZ CCW is not necessary if one has a CA CCW, and a FL CCW. So, one can save some money by just getting the FL CCW on top of the CA CCW and then one is good to go.

Sent out application by USPS Certified Mail and it was received there on 12/22/14.
Just got my card this week on 1/15/15, so accounting for 12/25 and 1/1 *minimum* for days closed over the holidays, it took basically 3 weeks. DD-214 was sent with application as proof of training.

Think UT gets you MN and WA. CA & FL do not. AZ gets you special carry rules while in their state.

I use certified mail just to be cautious. I think the Arizona DPS folks have been very helpful and straightforward with people. I know of some applicants who had omissions on their paperwork result in a phone call from DPS to clarify.

I'd give them a call if you don't receive anything in the next day or two and see what the status is, as it must be in database by now.

So I called to check on the status of my application that I dropped in the mail on December 12th, they say they find no records of an application for me.

Bummer. Must have been lost in the mail.

So I guess now I need to get a new application and start all over and try to get a money order refund, heard that is a nightmare too.

Did you save the money order receipt? I would hope a refund shouldn't be too hard...USPS? Western Union?... Just make sure that DPS knows not to cash it should it ever turn up. I would think once your new application is in the system, the original would get flagged anyway as a duplicate request. That is a bummer and a hassle though...let us know how it goes.

Yeah, I got the money order from USPS and still have the receipt so that is good. Just have to pay again to get fingerprinted.

Don't know how easy UT is to get. So far it seems they want a 4 hr training class (irrespective of the fact I just did 16 for CA) While they have what seems like a long list of providers, more than a few are not actually providing training, and one I called wanted $200 for the 4 hr class! (I paid the same amount for a 16 hour class for CA) Lot of work for a state I will likely never visit. You can get most of the same "bonus" states with an AZ permit and they (unlike UT) seem to accept just about anything in the way of firearms training.

Hang in there...good that you know they received it. Next thing you know you will have your permit in the mailbox.

Hope the refund goes smoothly. If DPS were to somehow get the original packet, I would think it would get flagged anyway and they would not try to cash the money order.

Getting the Permit:

The people in the AZ CCW office are friendly and HELPFUL. They DO NOT treat applicants as societal pariahs. You can call and ask them questions and they even provide an 800 number. (800) 256-6280

In practice it takes 4-6 weeks to get a permit 75 days seems to be something of a usual max. The latest I read on an Arizona Shooting forum suggests that the current wait time is 34 days.


The application/issuance process is very easy. Remember to sign the ap in BOTH places. Get fingerprinted, drop the cards and the ap in the mail and be a little patient. For a Californian, this process will be a culture shock for you. They treat applicants like it is a constitutional right to own and carry a firearm or something! (Of course as I understand it Arizona does not even require a CCW for people to carry there (in many places) at all... but the CCW gives you a few extra places you can go, and the big bonus is it gives you the rest of most of the United States. (check with a lawyer don't believe an internet post )

Speaking of culture shock, as part of the permit process you are required to become familiar with Arizona Statutes that cover carry and legal use of arms. Again for Californians these will be an amazing departure from what you are burdened with:

Training Issues:

As to the training requirement.. This is another easily met requirement. According to: http://www.azdps.gov/Links/ARS/?l=13/03112.htm An applicant shall demonstrate competence with a firearm through any of the following:

I would bet that 90+ percent of the people on CalGuns meet one or more of the above criteria ALREADY and do not even have to take another course!


Costs:

A NEW 5-year permit costs only 60 bucks.
Renewals are 43 dollars and do not require more fingerprints nor a refresher gun/safety course.

Arizona has almost a quarter of a million active permits in circulation. That's an easy 15 million dollars for their state.

No sure about FL, but UT, NV, OR, WA are pretty easy to acquire. UT can be done via Mail, but only with a training course. NV has to be done in- person (both training and application).... OR, WA have to be done in-person, however, they require minimal training which can be done online (for OR). Good luck!

FL requires a notary when signing the form.

Actually, if you add Utah to CA+FL you gain both MN & WA plus WI....so that's three states with one permit and the Utah permit renewal is $15 for five years!

I would bet that the idea of us in California getting a FL CCW was planted by the CCW instructors that ar making money off of it.
Otherwise AZ is just fine.

Bingo! As I have posted elsewhere, the ideal non-resident combo is Arizona + Utah....Florida is expensive and adds nothing to this combo other than Florida and even then, the only reason for a Florida permit is because they will NOT honor any of our non-resident permits!

So pass on the Florida permit unless you NEED coverage for Florida! And to further add to this entire issue, after Arizona + Utah, no other permit will add multiple states, each subsequent permit after Arizona + Utah will ONLY add that specific state, for example: FL, NV, OR, ME....

I am pretty sure you can conceal or open carry.
It is a free state.
