Monday morning I'll start my drive to Kentucky with my truck and a U-Haul trailer. If I take I-40 I get to carry all the way there except for in New Mexico, they don't like California's LTC permit.
Then I thought that I'd go north on I-15 to the I-70 and then across as it only adds 38 miles. But Colorado also doesn't recognize my CA permit. I could go all the way north on the I-15 to I-80 but then I have to go south again to avoid Illinois and it adds over 250 miles to the trip. It looks like I will lock up my gun on the way through New Mexico. ![]()

Under New Mexico laws...
It is legal to have a loaded handgun in your vehicle. ^If you do not have a valid carry permit, then it can not be concealed upon your person. Open carry is legal except in prohibited areas (Tribal lands, schools, etc). Posted no weapons/firearms signs have legal weight, so no carry where they have posted signs. |

Florida also covers New Mexico, Arizona, Utah...but not Nevada...when you get back from your trip..apply for your Arizona, Utah and Florida non resident permits...the main thing is that you have California....the difficult part is done.

Better carry an inflatable raft, too. Lots of Kentucky is under water today.

I made the exact drive to KY almost 3 years ago. You are clear to go straight through to TN on I-40 all the way to I-75, or I-65. I-65 would get you in KY sooner which is preferred since I have yet to be convinced that KY cares ones bit about speeding. You won’t need your CA CCW for vehicle carry the entire way and your only concern would be tribal lands, but sticking directly to I-40 would be safe.
Feel free to reach out if you need any help once you land in KY. Time it so you are in Memphis only during morning-early afternoon and do NOT stop there after dark. The pyramid Bass Pro there is quite nice. |

Thanks Guys, it looks like I can carry it openly in New Mexico.
My property is in central Kentucky and out of the badly flooded area. My actual land is the high point for the surrounding area and the nearest creek would have to rise over 100 feet to get to my place. I'm moving to Kentucky which is a constitutional carry state but I'll probably get a KY CCW for travel purposes, it's recognized in 38 states..
