Re the removable magazine types, I'm not so sure that there wouldn't be hull deformation after some time which might cause jams.

I don't know if things have changed but you should be ok if you buy the full length tube model 500... unless you later decide 8 shells is too many

I was just going to ask about the 88 that someone posted a link to...thanks for the heads up.

Steel receiver vs aluminum. Weight to felt recoil
Welded vs screw in ejector. Probably a non-issue for most folks Trigger guard safety vs tang mounted. Lefty/righty compatibility No magazine... Shoot 2 load 2. Shotgun magazines are expensive & unnecessary |

OP, in addition to the shotguns you listed, check out also the Benelli Nova/Super Nova line, the Winchester SXP line, and the Weatherby pump shotguns.
Don't be in a rush to buy, check out as many brand and model as time will allow. Don't be enamored much by " low price ", as prices on pump shotguns are really affordable. Bring the rest of your family along so they can handle the shotgun with you and give their input. Good luck. |

Actually the Super Nova is a good point. It’s definitely worth considering. It’s a rather odd shape and far fewer companies make quality aftermarket parts, but ghost rings coming on all models and the magazine cut off are good features.

So, my advise: if you don't have a shotgun yet, get one or several. The pumps are affordable indeed. As to my personal preference, I don't like clunky pump shotguns so I don't like the Mossberg 500s and family. That is not to say they are not good. Just personal preference. I just bought a Mossberg 930 Tactical, its a semi-auto. I also bought a Remington 870. I like them both, they are set up for serious home defense role, not hunting nor game playing. I might buy a Benelli Super Nova in the future..... but I am splurging my money currently on nice, affordable watches. Last edited by DArBad; 11-22-2018 at 5:31 PM.. |

from a Tacitcal Standpoint IE: HD the M500 is a better gun for several reasons. First: the Safety is located so not only can you get to it with either hand but you can easily see if it is on or off. All shotgun moves from a Ready position start with "Safety First."
Second the Ejection Port on the M500 is larger and that makes the empty gun quicker to load and makes single loading when empty easier. The 870 has a smaller port and also has a bump on the side of the lifter which gets in the way sometimes Third: The M 500/590 have dual action bars and dual extractors. This is stronger. 4th: Stay away from mag fed shotguns. They aren't worth the extra hassle and the don't handle nearly as well. Extra Magazines are not cheap and you do need them as there is no way to single load the guns if the mag is not there. The Mossbergs are cheaper and if you go to their catalog you find they have about 50 different models so you can get exactly what you want. I could go on,,, Randy

The store I went to didn't have the gun listed at this price. Show them the Big 5 website on your phone if you have the same issue. If you're military, they still give you the discount on top of the sale price!

I prefer the 930spx...low recoil, very fast shooting, very reliable, ambi-safety, great sights. Check out the one I have for sale for $480! (Ya, shameless plug, but it's still my favorite after 40 years of combat shotgun use!).

If you're trying to save money, an inexpensive self defense shotgun would be the entry level model of the Mossberg 590, model # 50778. This is somewhat different from the 590A1 in features but still good. I'd say get this 590 over a model 500. It's on sale at Turner's for $349.98, about $40 off the regular price of $389.99. It has an 18.5 inch barrel with 7 rounds. I think it's a good buy at the sale price. It's for self defense so you can't switch barrels for skeet or trap.
I've had both a Remington and Mossberg. |

I am not a fan of the detachable magazine model. I have no direct experience with it, but it looks to be very cumbersome.
I have been an 870 fan for four decades. I own several of them including the newer ones and have had no issues.

I have a new 870 and it works great thus far, only about 100 rounds through it in the 3 months I’ve had it. I’ve got a mossberg that’s older, never been a problem, has a lot of rounds through it. I personally like the mossberg safety placement better, but the Remington was smoother out of the box than the mossberg is with being shot and racked thousands of times.
