Default Surprisingly 1,000 yards hasn't been too difficult

I'm not talking about 1 shot 1 kill @ 1,000 yards.

More like confirm zero then gradually work up to 1,000 yards. Probably takes anywhere from 5-10 rounds to get to 1,000. Once there, I'm able to get consistent hits on man-sized (24" wide) targets pretty easily. And I haven't experienced strong winds so wind holdover has been minimal.

So far, I've tried with RPR 6 creed using Prime 107gr, R700 5R with MDT chassis using Hornady 178gr, PWS 6.5 creed with Hornady AG 140gr, and even Scar 17 with FGGM 168gr and VCOG (1-6x w/BDC for 175gr and in meters).

With the Scar, it took a few shots to figure out the holdover, but once I did, I was able to get consistent hits.

Only 1,000 yard range I have access to is CTA. The 6" red lollipop is challenging, but oddly, I've had better luck hitting the gopher.

I've only been shooting about 6 years and I don't have experience with old rusty rifles with iron sights so it's probably the instruments rather than the musician. Between factory match ammo, quality rifles, decent glass (NF NXS, NF SHV, Vortex PST II, Athlon ARES, etc), and ballistic apps, if the shooter doesn't mess it up, it's going to hit where you aim.

Are there any ranges in the area (So Cal) beyond 1,000 yards? Would like to stretch it out and see what I can do with my MPA BA 6.5 and Barrett 300 wm.

Let us know how you do when you are holding 10-20ft of windage.

In NRA organized competition, you get 2 sighters at each distance before you start shooting for score.

That's why I mentioned the lack of wind.

I'm shooting from a bench on a covered range. I'm aware that's not the same as being in an open field with a ton of wind.

After the first of August I will have nothing to do for the rest of my life so I'll be spending a lot of weekends up at the Tri-County Rifle range, (near Cuyama in Central Cali.)

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Tr...4d-119.4985519

I just ordered an electronic target so I don't have to have anyone in the butts to mark targets any more. If you guys want to try shooting from 600 to 1,000 yards, hit me up. I believe that we'll have the steel gong at a mile by then also.

Those E-targets are so nice! Shotmarker or Solo/Silver Mountain? Our club ( Santa Margarita) has both but I have no preference.

Today’s rifles, optics and match ammo are pretty amazing. But like Randall said, wind increases difficulty exponentially. I’m garbage at reading and dialing for wind, it’s an art and there’s no substitute for training, practice and experience.

In Socal- I am not aware of a range that is more than 1K.

We do have a lot of FLAMMABLE BLM land....

years back, we would go out in the desert just past Jawbone store in red rock...

Find a nice alluvial fan in a canyon and set up camp...

The canyons are nice as no one will come down on a dirtbike if you pick the right spot...

as always
1- check to verify where you can legally Camp and Shoot
2- no steel / bimetallic rounds
3- clear a huge impact area - no vegetation - this could now be illegal - figure out where and how to shoot safely.
4- have fire extinguishers and shovels... Fire danger is real.

Google maps and Google earth are your friend... you can measure and see a lot of potential places to shoot

I ordered the Shotmarker because our club uses them and already has the mounts on the frames set up.

Though I have yet to go, I have heard great things about Piru shooting range. They have a gong out to a 1000 yards. Based upon what I have heard about the place, I plan to go soon.

You need to shoot in a real wind to appreciate the distance.

I was pulling targets at one Camp Perry National, bitching about how windy the day before was. My bullets were drifting 36 to 40 inches at 600 yards. Well an old shooter nearby, came over and told me, that when he won the 1000 yard match, with his M14 (I think he was retired USMC Rifle Team) that he had full right windage on, and was aiming three targets over!

All I could say was "bad day"!

However, if you look at how far his bullet drifted, given that NM sights for the Garand and the M14 are the same

Total clicks on 308 NM Garand from center, to all right: 34 total clicks till sight base stopped. Since these are half MOA, the MOA is 17 MOA

at 1000 yards, that would be 10 inches X 17 =170 inches = 14 feet.

Shooter aiming three targets over at 1000 yards

So, assume 12 foot target centers, 36 plus 14 is 50 feet of wind drift at 1000 yards more or less. Probably more.

Days like that, with the gusts that accompany the wind, that will make 1000 yard shooting unpredictable.

If the wind is consistent, you can shoot it. It's when the wind is gusting from 10 ring to dirt ring that it really kills you.

I'm thinking about it right now. My brother (TINMAN) and a buddy from Oregon just asked me if I was interested in a 2-3 day San Diego trip

Their website says 700 yards max. Do you have more info on this? Is this longer range, out to 1400, open to the public? Only on certain days? Club events only? Matches only? I'll give 'em a call but just wondering.

SAC Valley has a 1,000 yard range, for example, but you can only use it for a match or during a practice session once per month with a specific club. Not available to the public.

Called SLOSA and they do NOT have a 1400+ range...

That is a separate facility nearby: Central Coast Long Range Shooters

Sign up for their matches or practice, they are some good people. Just contact the match director saying you're new and they will totally help you out.

LR shooting.

Everyone is a great shooter. Correct? Correct. And we are going to shoot long range rifle at short range prices, quickly, right? Right.

The hardest thing to teach anyone is to teach them something they think they already know.

Yeah I've done that lol. I'm just saying it's not like you can show up on any random day and shoot long range at SAC Valley. It's one weekend per month.

It’s really the same facility, but the range is in a separate area. As you drive in, stay to the right. It’s open to the public, but the range is not open every day. I know they are open Thursday’s 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM. I shot there last month and the range fee is $20 dollars if your not a member.

There is actually two long distance sections at that range. One in front of the bench’s that goes to 1000 yards and another one off to the right that goes to 1450 yards with steel about every 100 yards. The range has a slight incline to the more distant targets.

Nice shooting. My son just got a new rifle and is taking up long range shooting.
