I have two Savage rifles, and I am in love with both of them. Economical, lots of factory features, very accurate out of the box with factory ammo, and even more so with tuned handloads.
First up my 10 FCP-K in 223 Remington. Fluted heavy bull barrel, factory muzzle brake, accutrigger (I set mine at 28 oz), and detachable bottom metal. I have three mags for my squirrel shooting sessions in Modoc county. She wears a Vortex Viper PST 6-24 x 50 FFP scope. ![]() Out of the box with factory PMC ammo I hit a quarter at 300 yards in 5 shots. ![]() With my rifle-tuned 3500fps reloads (40gr Vmax or Nosler Varmint tips, 28gr win 748, and cci primer) she'll do sub-MOA groups all day long out to 300 yards. At 100 yards these reloads are carrying 800 ft lbs of Skippy launching energy. I exploded this guy into the wheeline at 157 yards last month up in Cedarville. ![]() Next is my Model 12 FCV in 22-250 Remington. She has the same features as my Model 10, but no fluted barrel or muzzle brake. She wears a Vortex 4-16 x 40 Viper SFP with BDC reticle. ![]() Again, very accurate with factory loads; crazy accurate with handloads. I use 40gr Sierra Blitzkings over 38gr of H380 and a cci primer for 4020fps squirrel busters. Here's six shots at 100 yards. ![]() These handloads carry over 1000 ft lbs of Skippy launching energy at 100 yards. ![]() Love my Savages. Hopefully the pics came out, cause I did this all on my phone. Please excuse any typos, this was composed using the tiny keyboard on my mobile device Last edited by Strafer; 07-29-2018 at 6:46 PM.. |

Here's my new to me model 10 in 308 with a leatherwood Hi-Lux scope (came with the rifle, I only run vortex but this scope isn't to bad for now). My first 4 rounds of reloads could be covered by a quarter. I just finished up the paint job today, I like it and once it gets some wear on it, it will look even better. I know, I need new pictures.

This is my Factory Savage 300 win mag budget experiment. What I mean with experiment is I wanted to challenge myself and my reloading to make it shoot close to a custom rifle. With the grouping posted below and LOTS of load testing I was able to some satisfactory results.

.338 win mag Hog Hunter topped with a Leopold vx2 3-9 scope used as an African Safari rifle. I'm very pleased with it.

The poor relative of the Savage family, the Stevens 200. In 7mm-338 Lapua Improved.
Action work includes short truing and opening up to large shank threads, #8 scope mount screws with 3/16" dowel, magazine well opened up to feed CIP length cartridges. The bolt head was swapped from a magnum to Lapua face and the firing pin adjusted to accommodate the different length. The bolt body is shortened to improve primary extraction and the big bolt on the end shortened and turned down to guide the cocking collar. Rifle Basix SAV-2 trigger. The barrel is Bartlein, 32", 1:8.25 5R, Muzzle Brakes and More Beast brake. Sharp Shooter Supply recoil lug. Murphy Precision 60 moa mount with extra height, Nightforce rings, Vortex level, ATACR F1 5-25. XLR Evolution chassis with hinged Extreme stock, long hand guard, and CIP magazine cut out, Accurate Mags 338 Lapua CIP length magazine. Cartridges pictured, 7-338LI, 7-338, 300wm. It fires the 7mm 195 grain Berger Hybrids at 3310 fps using 101 grains of H50. The pressure is far below what the Lapua brass can take. More velocity is possible with more pressure and double based powders, but the velocity spreads from H50 are very low in this pressure range. The Berger FAQ on these bullets said they were tested to 3300 fps during development, so this seems like a good place to stop. Not sure on barrel life yet. Pretty sure it's going to be dog years. To be honest, I've only shot 2 three shot groups with it to establish the zero. Both were half inch. Previous versions of this gun gave most 5 shot groups in the 3/8" to 3/4" range, with anything nearing an inch making me a little pouty because it could only be me. I shoot prone off a bipod and load it pretty heavily so I can spot my shots, so I'm far from a bench rest shooter.
After experience with a straight 7/338 Lapua, this round was designed around a particular bullet and powder and has a well tuned QL model, so load development went really fast. I loaded 5 as a first guess for the fire forming load. That gave a little more extractor groove expansion than I wanted from the fire forming load, so I backed it off 2 grains and loaded up the rest of the box of 50. With the full power loads, same basic process but I bumped it a grain for the rest of the box. End of load development so far. I shot it Saturday. It hit on the third round and went 3/10 on a 32"x36" target at 2200 yards. It only took 18.2 mils with the 195 hybrid full power loads at a local elevation of 2000'. It hit a 1620 yard 24"x32" target on the first shot with the fire forming loads. To fire form, I'm using what look to be preproduction 180 ELDm that Midway was selling as blems for 15 cents each. The barrel has a 5" long 1.25" diameter breech and a straight taper to a 1" muzzle. The difference between the fire forming and full power 100 yard zero is only 1 click of elevation. The gun is a little over 20# and the brake is very effective. Spotting shots is straight forward, even at 25x. It's pretty easy to shoot well and doesn't wear you out. Double plugging is necessary, even outdoors. |
