Opinion -how many guns would you put on the ccw list ?

i was approved last weekend and need 8 hrs training class.
My instructor asked me to give him a list so he can prep for it.
I heard some ppl put 3 , some put 10 or 10+. In my case, there is no limit # on the list at IA.
is it more practical to put the small/mid size gun on the list.
like P365 x macro, 1911 commander, glock 19, p320..etc rather
than the full size such as shadow2, tso or s&w 627/629, full size 1911, glock 34..etc.
what's your opinion ?

I hope IA?s increases from 3 to 5 or unlimited.
I?d add a 3? 1911 and a revolver or two.

But yes, more the better as you can adjust if needed depending on occasion or season. Just make sure you’re proficient with each or have a similar manual of arms

Realistically, I think 3 to 5 is probably the sweet spot. Is it coincidence that my IA has a 5 max policy? Maybe. I just don't see having 47 pieces on you license all that realistic. So there is a upper limit for practicality's sake.

Ultimately, I went for different sized single stacks of different calibers. A micro, 2x sub, 2x compact. I wanted something that would disappear in speedo's when its crazy hot. But if it's not crazy hot, compacts point more naturally and handle recoil better for me. If I had another spot, I'd add my full size 1911, but the chance of me carrying that would be microscopic. It has real Damascus steel grips. Not a featherweight.

These are the factors that are important to ME. YOU might have different factors that are important to you. Cover your bases. If you have a race gun, some people add that to their license for transportation legality's sake.

I have 8 on mine. Three of them I use in rotation. Five of them are just because. G19 is my go to 80% of the time.

This is a fair question and will mainly depend on Post 3, but also depend on what you're thinking and want to do. I know this has been a difficult decision for many folks who are really into handguns. Other folks can't even decide on one gun...

I currently have four S&W J-frames, but reading some of the various IA's qualification requirements, I probably wouldn't pass if there was a 25 yard shooting portion. I also know I just don't carry my other revolvers much, if at all, too (three other revolvers).

I also have four 1911s, but find I wouldn't carry them much, if at all, any more (too big & heavy), but could see qualifying with one perhaps, as they just shoot so well.

There are other handguns I know I'm just not interested in carrying.

If I had to narrow it down, I'd stick with my smaller-than-my-G34 Glocks as I also found I never carry my G34.

I own ten handguns which I will occasionally carry but could easily cut that list down if I had to.

Some of the decisions may also depend on IA-allowed modifications, too.

Find out what the course of fire (COF) is.

Choose handguns which you know you'll be able to qualify with that COF.

Do some envisioning as to what you'll actually want to carry in most or all circumstances you might encounter.

Assure having various holsters and reloads for each handgun.

Make a decision.

The first time I was approved for my permit I knew of two guns I wanted on for sure and no clue about the rest. My county is unlimited also. I chose 5 ranging from pocket carry to full-size because the place where I took the class only would qualify me with that many during the class due to time constraints. I settled on carrying a shield most of the time, but it's nice to have choices. The more the merrier!

I went for 5. That way I can keep a pistol I'm each car and have 3 for everyday carry. 2 is 1 and 1 is none

I put all my pistols on my permit.
That way whenever I go to the range I don't have to unload them, etc and worry about forgetting to do it to one of them.
The only one not on my permit is my buckmark 22.
Fortunately my IS allows it, others aren't as lucky.

There may be benefit to having guns on your CCW since you could then transport them without them having to be in a locked container...maybe. I think the new SB2 bill may limit you to carrying two guns at a time so the benefits of this may be limited.

But there may also be benefit to having extra/additional guns on your CCW. It could be good to have some backups if your standard CCW gun needs to go in for service or something.

There may also be guns that you don't normally carry...like bigger guns...but that you may want to carry if things really go south.

It's good to have options.

But if you list a bunch and leave some off, make sure you know which is which. To transport, you have to unload and lock up those not listed.

YOu also may want to think about what you will say should a friendly LEO ask if you have guns in the car (many threads on this) and can they check them.

My IA allows only 3. I've been collecting guns for 4 decades now. I have a lot more than 3. What would be nice is if the California CCW was like every other state, in that no guns need to be listed on the license.

Imagine if you had to take a road test and list every car you own on your drivers license. I better shut up an not give our state legislators any ideas...

I?m only allowed 3, but I would list 5 or 6 if I could. I?m going with two 9mm holster guns and a J-frame revolver for pocket carry this go-around, but I would love to be able to add one or two .45s for winter wear and a full-size .357 magnum revolver for backcountry activities.

For 6 years I had 3 on it. G19/LC9/jframe airweight.

After the shidee ruger trigger return spring broke after 600ish rounds I dont trust it. And if I need something light weight I have a jframe.

So after 6years, for the last 6 years I only have 2..g4G19 and my S&W 442-.38 spcl airweight.

I carry then g19 95% of the time.

Having a bunch of similar size guns is a waste to me. Our county requires each gun be qualified with and most instructors charge you per gun and qualify. So its not worth it to me.

Only other 3rd pistol I really wanted was an AR Pistol as the trunk monkey when traveling through Big Blue City Sheite holes... but Sac county says No rifle caliber pistols..Boooooo!!

I believe it should be any dam amount of firearms you want. Reality is..2 should really cover your needs. Hell G19 is Perfection so you could say just 1 : ) hahhaha

When you take your training and go through the qualification, does your IA require you to qualify with each handgun? If yes, then there may be a practical limit that your trainer has for watching you shoot the qual. Ex, bringing 20 handguns, you have to the shooting with each one and bring ammo and multiple magazines, holsters, reloading, etc.

I'm limited to 3. I would really have liked to have 5-6 to give the options of XS, S, M, L and XL options plus a couple of duplicates as back-up.

But the whole qualify with each gun thing is just another infringement that someone would have to challenge in the courts and bring up Bruen and THT. Anyone got an extra $1M around to fund a court case? Plus, to take effect statewide, you'd have to go class-action after each county with their own policies.

My IA allows 3. I only have two on my permit, a CZ PO-1 and Gen3 G17. I do not have another gun to add.

Had to qualify with both firearms.

I have the max my IA allows, 5. 5 isn't enough for me to cover all the different scenarios I've come across. I think 8-10 should be the minimum.

I went with 3 - all Glocks 26, 19 and a 17. Same manual of arms and basically stock with night sights.

Even worse is I have the same make and style holster for the 26 and 19. (Broomeland MaxCon IV)

I often drive to our place in Arizona overnight so the 17 lives in my console vault with a TRL 1 mounted with a few spare magazines accompanying it.

After 30 years of collecting I could have listed a whole bunch more, but over the years I have found fewer works for me. 🤷*♂️

Mine has room for 5 on the permit. I'm not sure if that's the absolute maximum or if you could ask to list a couple more. I have 5 but wouldn't bother with more then that anyway.

My IA permits unlimited. I have eight listed but only five show up on the credit card. I get to chose which five show up on the card. All of them show up on the paper form. A few years back when we still went in person to be photographed and pick up the permit the person taking my photo told me she just had a guy who had everything he owned on his (something like 20 or 30 as I recall).

I need to re-up again soon. I'm considering dropping from 4 to 2.
I really carry 1 gun 99% of the time. I'm thinking keep that one and 1 other as a backup.

The powers to be in CA just want CA residents to think they are "safer" than the other states by making CCW holders "qualify".

Prop 65 is another example of falsely telling residents they're safer than the other states.

I don't have to deal with a list but I still just carry my Glock 19 MOS everywhere. I can carry quite a bit of other guns from a Sig P-320 XFull to a P365 in its smallest configuration, then some in between options. The Glock 19 with an RMR fits all my needs, but I think you could find what works best for you in all situations and use that. Maybe get two or three so if one has issues or you have to use one and it gets taken as evidence you don't have to worry.

But watch out, the ATF is monitoring when you purchase more than one firearm at a time.

That person has to shoot 3000 rds in 3-4 hrs . I guess the in class lessons would taken 4 hrs and live fire at range will be left around 3-4 hrs. ...3000 rds would burn $$$

Who is your IA?

The current statute (26165) says:

(3) The course shall include live-fire shooting exercises on a firing range and shall include a demonstration by the applicant of safe handling of, and shooting proficiency with, each firearm that the applicant is applying to be licensed to carry.

Often, instructors and IAs consider the first 50 rounds to be practice with the for the certification leading only to the need for demonstration of safe handling and proficiency for all guns. That cuts the ammo requirement and the time.
Also, many instructors will include the first 3 guns in their fee. Any additional require an additional fee.

Though the limit is hooey, the requirement is you still have to qualify with each weapon on your permit.... (and every 2 years gets old)
For me, I find 3-5 to be reasonable.... lets me get a wider variety of weapon caliber and size so I can adjust for attire and situation.
Glock 23, 27, Sig P365 and Sig P238 (for when I need something smaller than the rest).
If I was limited to 3, I would drop off the Glock 23, with the other guns, it is unlikely I would carry the 23 with any regularity living in SoCal.

Once the novelty wears off, you'll carry 1 or 2 of them 99% of the time. I carry the same 2 Glocks I carried back when I first got a permit in CA. A gen 3 G19 (90% of the time) and a G43 (9% of the time). The other 1% is carrying something "cool" to a family get together or something. In general however, I want the same darn gun coming out of my holster on that terrible day should it arrive. So If I carried a 1911, I would carry nothing but 1911's. I just don't want to draw when my adrenaline is at an all time high and try to remember what gun I am carrying.

I've bounced all kinds of ridiculous scenarios in my head, tried to justify carrying all kinds of things. But what day do I walk out of the house thinking someone needs to be shot with something other than a 124g hollowpoint? And if I can make that argument, let's say a .357, what day do I go out thinking someone needs to be shot with less than that?

I carry a 10mm when I hunt, but a G20 is pretty big to conceal on a daily basis... But you know what? List what you can, because F California BS. If you aren't restricted to a number and have 4 or 5 guns you might actually carry in different situations list them all.
