Very Gently. I used an old T Shirt, turpentine and a lot of elbow grease. Did not want to sand it in any way so that the markings would not get ruined. After the turps, I hand rubbed gunny paste into the wood. Took about 8 hours total, then turned my attention to removing cosmoline from the metal.
