Chimney Peak Wilderness

https://www.blm.gov/visit/chimney-peak-wilderness

It is a turn off on highway 178. I shoot there in the winter. Nobody, no problems, you are alone.

I've read about the SSZS location. Any better directions than just Barstow? Thanks.

Just looking for a quiet place where it's lawful to do 100-300 yards without any hassle.

That whole area is worth checking out then! When I get back in the office I'll hit you up direct.

Check out blm closures before thinking you can just go shoot.

BLM has a lot of restrictions
Where you can shoot
What type of Ammo you can shoot

I have not gone to jawbone in years. I don’t know if you can shoot there anymore

The last 2 places I went near Palm Springs are now closed.

For good reason. Trust me, he is not being a jerk. Whenever a particular spot gets popular there is inevitably a number of people who will abuse it. Trash gets left behind to the point where no amount of cleanup efforts will restore the land. Then there are the reckless and dangerous shooters who don't observe proper safety practices. Eventually the BLM or County then just closes the area to shooting. We don't want that happening here, but unfortunately we see some of the early signs just due to the sheer number of past SSZS attendees.

Just do what most of us do to start. Buy maps from the BLM office, check out local shooting ordinances (San Bernardino County also offers a map along these lines), and just start researching and driving around. If you pay your dues, you will appreciate it even more, and others will be more comfortable sharing information with you. Or if you wish to attend SSZS, just keep an eye out for the threads with future event information.

The whole are is pretty good, I have a few spots that I like to visit for different shooting. sszs is a great spot for 800yards if the wind isn't crazy.

It’s actually great for 1,200 you just have to follow that road down the line.

Yeah. I dont encourage the longer shooting unless the place is on lock down. People are dumb (as we saw last night) and will shoot that distance and never hit the plate but something else.

The winds out there tho can be intense at 1000 yards but smooth as butter at 400.

Default SSZS Question

I saw the videos. My question is whether the event is mainly targeted to the younger crowd? It seems to be. We enjoy good times and good company, but my wife and I are seniors.

But I also see that the location is good for longer distance shooting ... which is another item on my bucket list.

There is a great mix. I am a younger guy (35) but take my father with me every year. There are also several other senior aged people.

Is a high clearance vehicle required?

If you're referring to SSZS. I've seen plenty of older people there. I don't see any issue with senior citizens going.

It’s a family event. We have attendees all the way from 7 months to 83 years. Most of the people in my particular camp were over 50. Age is no issue, all that is required is that you enjoy exercising your freedoms on our public land.
