Default I got a job in Phoenix... now I have 6 weeks left in CA...

Same company, a bit less pay, different job (moving from the design side to a support/parts type position). Working for "a major aerospace company" in Phoenix area.

But... the Mrs. and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We've talked about moving for over a decade, most likely at retirement... then came a Thursday night about 4 months ago when we were packing the RV for a camping trip that weekend, planning to leave in the morning.

Suddenly, my wife says the radio just told her Newsome was going to put the entire state under house arrest due to the Chinese flu... so we left a night early, hoping we could make it to the border before martial law was declared.

He didn't declare martial law, but he did close just about everything, and that weekend we spent a wonderful few days at a lake in AZ, then ate at a restaurant like real people with a waiter and everything.

It always hurt to get home from AZ, but this time it felt like going into prison.

We decided, at that point, we'd had enough.

I'm not sure if my first purchase will be a cheap, rack-grade AR-15 with pistol grip and flash hider, or a switchblade, or Everclear 190. :-)

August 18th is my first day at the new facility...

Now I just need to pack up all this crap...

I don't sell guns. :-)

nothing I have is unusual or off-roster anyway... nothing anyone will miss when it leaves the state.

I am thinking I'd like a silencer or two, maybe an AR pistol...

I did mention I'm making LESS money, right? :-)

I hate feeling like I've given up... The first thing i did when i turned 18 was move here... Met my wife here... And you don't defeat evil by running away from it... But I'm tired of being beat on.

The making less money won't matter as much when you realize the cost of living adjustment and see the difference.

I now make the same in Idaho as I did in California, and my family live at an exponentially better standard of living.
Congratulations on being able to relocate your family to freedom. Good luck.

What a crazy political system we have in this state that a place like AZ is more desirable lol. Congrats on the move!

I've only ever flown through Phoenix but it looks nice.

But, your housing cost has been cut in half.
And lower gas & food prices,
Lower income and property taxes,
lower cost of living

I think you'll be ok

Actually, my housing costs will be roughly the same, but I'll be in a much nicer house. (I live in Compton, and bought my house almost 20 years ago)

Get your CA DMV form ready to submit, along with proof of your new registration when you obtain it. E-file form 1’s are running quickly right now, so set aside a few hundred dollars for those. Until BATFE gets Form 4’s online those are taking a long time, so pick a rim fire and pistol can soon.

You might work at the same company my friend does. He did the move a couple of years ago and his commute went from and hour and a half to about 10 minutes. Congratulations.

There is a beautiful mountain town about halfway between Phoenix and Prescott. We were debating moving there and doing the hour long commute for the amazing view... But realized our sanity was more important.

I think it's Black Canyon City.

There was a mobile home for sale for $77K on an acre of land with a view of the valley that would cost you 3 or 4 million in Santa Barbara. We were THIS CLOSE to buying it and sucking up the hour long commute down to phoenix.

Back in May 2004 wife and I were looking at houses in Surprise AZ we have a lot of former military friends that live in and around the area. Found a house we both liked, went back to our friends house for lunch there was a message on their answering machine from my son in law my father had a heart attack and was in ICU back in Michigan, we left and I flew back to be with him. When I got back we failed to complete the move, we both regret that, now at 78 I just can't see us moving.
Congrats on your move and the best to you, I'm jealous.

Anybody have any first hand experience of dealing with what seems to be the oppressive Arizona heat? I am all for change, just not sure about that heat.

Congrats to the OP!

I've been in Vegas and Phoenix in 115F and higher weather. It sucks, but it's not nearly as bad as 90F and 90% RH in NYC growing up...

Just don't park your black leather interior car in direct sunlight, and it's survivable.

Never heard of Black Canyon City. Looking at a map, I've apparently driven through it many times without noticing.

Phoenix freeways at commute time aren't like the 405, but don't expect clear sailing either. Plenty of stop and go traffic.

BTW the AZ governor just did almost the same thing you were talking about Newsum doing. He closed gyms and is going to be looking at lawsuits for it. He couldn't mandate masks for all, but he suggested it and most cities did mandate them with misdemeanor penalties. If you're caught maskless in public not driving solo you can get cited.

As you age that heat gets better. Coming from Chicago where I used to grill outside in sub zero temps there is no way I would live anywhere that had snow again.

Every year I like the heat more. Was out yesterday shooting machine guns. Was 95 in the desert and 102 back on pavement.

After a few years of living in Phoenix your body will consider 60 to be extremely cold. 70 cold. 80 no longer need a hoodie. 90 nice. 100 warm. 110 uncomfortable. 120 like 85 in Chicago.

Or you can fight the heat and run your ac below 77 and always be miserable. My AC is never below 79. I've ran my fireplace when it was 70 in the house in the winter. I'm typically shivering below 70 and wear thermals in the desert below 60.

Well said audiophil2, don’t fight the heat, embrace the change and your body will follow.

True, and we're not thrilled about that... but at least he didn't do it on Day 1, 24 hours after telling people the Chinese Flu isn't anything to worry about, and we should all go hang out in Chinatown.

And, the people didn't just bend over and accept it.

Lived on and off for much of my life in Southern Arizona.

You will get used to the heat and, to a great degree, it's a mental thing.

You will also learn to adjust your life to avoid the worst of it by waking early in the day in order to finish exercise, yard work, etc.

Personally, I got so used to it that, like most natives Arizonans, you wear a hat and long sleeves to cover up in the sun.

Personally, I can't stand Phoenix. Too hot.

I'm not even too crazy about Tucson, and that's disregarding how effed up it is politically.

Question for you AZ types: do you have a different set of applicances available in AZ than in CA? I'd like to get a bunch of stuff without this energy-star-low-flush bull****, but the selection on Lowes website seems the same...

Did you change the "nearest store" locator to an Az address?

I don't know about toilets but Nat Gas appliances. There is a big diff.

Gas Water heaters cost about 1/2 what they do in CrapOfornia because of the "Green House Gas" cow fart regs.

The glass top ones with split burner sizes are pretty decent. It’s what I have.

The knob has two sides for cooking. Smaller or larger. The burner itself has 2 different ring markings for the same.

My neighborhood has gas. I have a gas heater, WH and Drier. I do find it odd they didn’t plumb behind the range for gas

Yeh we have the glass top deal and small large options. But we don’t have gas service so it’s all electric 👎
