School Me on a Trout Setup
Haven’t fished since I was a kid, now seems like a good time to start. What’s a good starter rig? It will be lightly used so I don’t want to break the bank. What’s the ideal rod length, bait/lure, setup, etc.
Thx.

With trout you can get an ultralight rod and reel to experience the little fight that is in a trout. When I fish for trout, I just want to catch them, so I use a heavier rod and reel. I like a good quality reel, so look at the Shimano website, and select the reel that you want. Shimano also makes a good line of trout rods. YouTube has a lot of trout videos, enjoy watching them.

That's it!! Caught many fish in the streams at Mammoth on worms, Hot tip. light weight pole and rod setup from Big 5 will work.

Any light-weight rig will do the trick. If it works for bass, it can work for trout.
Anytime my boys start complaining that their rod, reel, lure, line, sun angle, wind speed, planet alignment is keeping them from catching fish, I offer them a $20 bet that I can catch something with their rig. They haven't taken me up on it yet. |

Big 5 special with power bait or nightcrawlers and lots of beer. I usually stuff my waders full of bud light and start at the top of the stream and by the time I'm down the stream all beers are crushed in my back pocket and all the front pockets are full of trout.

Trout - easiest fish to catch
You gonna have to try different types bait/lures and see what they are hitting on where you fish ...is why it's called fishing ... not catching

Don't buy fly rod Unless you know how to use it. Its a lot of work to learn.
Best bait i have found is turn rocks over at water line. Look for worms and grubs under the rocks. Grubs seem to catch more trout. Lure Kastmasters work well. Last edited by rg_1111@yahoo.com; 03-24-2020 at 2:06 PM.. |

Light line light gear light lures and small hooks.
Stocked trout are dumb if you find somewhere with freshly planted trout and have some competence you will catch fish. Wild trout and trout that see alot of pressure and fly fishing take alot more skill and patience in most cases. You can get a pretty good quality spinning set up for less than a hundred dollars these days. Or you can treat fishing like guns and spend the price of a decent used car and fill up your garage with more stuff you dont need. Last edited by woolybugger; 03-24-2020 at 2:38 PM.. |

A light action spinning rod rated for 4 - 8 Lbs line, and a reel to match. I'd go with 6 Lbs test monofilament line to start with.
For bait fishing I like 1/4 ounce sliding sinkers, small swivels and size 10 or 12 bait hooks. You can fish with grubs, worms or power bait. For spinning the 1/4 ounce and smaller spinners (Rooster tails, Mepps, etc.) in a variety of colors with gold or silver blades.

This. For carolina rig I would use a small, small, small treble hook (maybe size 14) I usually use 2 pound test. Watch your drag. Could use heavier fluorocarbon if you want.

Trout are very picky get a light rod 6’ nice reel and either 2lb-4lb test I use nymphs preferably shad color and just kill trout now that is my set up and also use tube jigs and occasionally some spinner but when bite is slow of course powerbait.

$20 combo will get it done. Mitchell or Ugly stick. My $17 Turners Mitchell combo is my go to and has caught far more Trout than my $400 Loomis/Okuma setup

Try to find an ultra-light spin-casting combo. 4lb line on the reel, 2lb line for leader.

All good advice above.
I’ll second the ugly stick combo. Ultralight to light power. 4-6 lb mono for your mainline, 2-4 lb mono leader. Carolina rig - fish the bottom Split shot under a bobber - fish the top 1/8 - 1/4 ounce spinner or spoon - fish the whole column. Lots of other setups you will run into if you start surfing youtube, but that will get you fishing. Get yourself a small pair of needlenose pliers, a line nipper/cutter, a 4-6” filet knife and a skillet full of butter and you are good to go!

Full disclosure:
I don't fish for stocked trout. That out of the way i will say that the sliding Carolina rig will cause you a lot of grief on a steep rocky shore line. Better a dropper rig with the egg sinker held on with a split shot so it's sacrificial if you get hung on the rocks. Rules of thumb with trout. Use the least weight, lightest line and smallest hook you can get away with. Flourocarbon leader is your friend.

This right here.....I have a 5’ Ultra Light Ugly Stick with a Mitchell reel that I’ve had, um forever, and have caught more Trout & Small Mouth with it than any other set-up I have.

All good advice...I have several from rods 5' to 7' but ultralight to light I like 2-6 spinning rods and to be picky cork handle I love catching trout on hardware 1/16-1/8 torpedo or bullet spins are just a pleasure for most rivers I hit in summer. Have fun it is a true addiction and can be a scientific study if you enjoy that type of thing.

If you are interested in trout fishing, this is one of my favorite channels to watch, where I get a lot of freshwater fishing tips. There are a lot of fishing videos on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/user/FishinaddictsNW/videos

And for the Debbie downer......
Almost a waste of time to try to trout fish if you plan to go to your local lake. Most lakes are closed. Second problem, not too much longer trout will be moving to deeper water when surface temps get too warm. This will put them out of reach for bank fishing. If you plan to try stream fishing, that is a fair option, but you won't be the only one. Lots of fishermen need their "fix". DFW doesn't stock too many streams, so more than likely the guys fishing before you will strip any streams bare. |

I fish for trout in sierra streams and rivers. Lightweight or ultralight spinning combo. My go to is a Panther Martin, silver blade yellow body with red dots. Catches everything, even the native trout at my gold claim. But, I think I'm the only one whose tossed a line in that section of river in years.

Really depends on the lake and type of bait/lure being used. If you have a two-rod stamp you can use one rod to do a top/bottom presentation and one to cast a lure. This is generally what I do until I find which presentation they like. I also agree in using the lightest tackle setup you can get away with. Trout are probably one of the most line-shy fish out there, especially the natives - they can be super finicky and picky. |

For small streams take a worm or cricket with 1 spit shot weight about a foot er 2 from the hook. Cast and let worm flow with the current naturally. And repeat for about 10 cast's. If that dont work, do something different or move to a new hole. Last edited by RIFLERACK31; 03-27-2020 at 9:03 PM.. |
