Default STI tactical approved by LAPD/LASD

anyone that works for either of these agencies have anymore info on this?

anyone planning on making the switch to the STI?

if so, what holster are you going to use?

STI is not approved for LASD... at least not yet. I’ll let LAPD guys speak for their policy, but I do believe STI was recently approved there.

Not LAPD/LASD but that is a 1911 we'd authorize. By policy you'd need to carry the same model holster (if available) as our issue. In this case, you'd be looking at a 6280 or 85 or 7377 from Safariland for uniform patrol. Plain clothes or other special assignments have some additional options.

LAPD: 9mm STI’s (1911/2011) were approved in August (so were other manufacturers). Officers still need to be 1911 trained/ certified. The Edge and Tactical are 4” guns so they fit into the regular 1911 holsters. Marauder if you buy it from a third party. Main issue is patrol mag pouches, they don’t exist. There is a company that is going to custom make them.

I have heard that Safariland will be manufacturing a whole line of products for the STI, because of the approval.

Can anyone confirm this?

Not sure why Safariland would. Less then a hundred LAPD will buy the STI, 90% already have the 5" 1911 holster that fits the 4" STI. Not really a market.

Would anyone working patrol really carry a $3K pistol? Such items get beat to hell rather quickly. A Glock or M&P would seem more logical. Maybe an MC Operator or Tacops if it must be a 1911

LAPG gun store had a sale going on. 1700 plus tax/dros. I spent just under 1900 on mine.

I still need mags, but for me, It was between a Dan Wesson Specialist 9mm or the STI. pretty much the same price point.

That is a good question. It is definitely a cool gun and probably shoots really great. I think it's almost like wearing a Rolex on patrol, when a Casio G-Shock will do.

No kidding. Maybe it’s some type of $3K status symbol one feels compelled to have in front of their peers. For a “duty” weapon, maybe guys can convince Louis Vuitton or Chanel to come up with a custom duty holster for it as well.

I had to come back to this thread and clarify myself. I must say that if a $3K weapon or any other gun for that matter makes one happy, then that’s all that matters. Any new gun is a good thing in my opinion and we all should enjoy our tools of the trade. I can’t fault anyone for that.

Same here. I'd love to own an STI or any high end firearm for that matter. I would not however carry it on duty.

I saw a ton of high end 1911s on deputies hips when I lived in Texas.

I've seen a couple decent one's on deputies here in Sonoma County.

Ted Blocker which makes the optional LAPD swivel holster, im sure would make a mag pouch for the STI. They are a small shop that does custom orders.

Safariland open top mag pouches will work for STI mags. Just choose group 1. Essentially they are glock45 mag holders.

I have a Springfield Professional 1911 in .45 and even if they had been allowed, I would not have used it on duty for two reasons: 1. Even tho it's used, it has no scratch marks and I don't want it "beat to hell," as Bobby said. 2. I wouldn't carry a gun with such a limited capacity. I liked carrying the 92F with 15+1 and two mags on my belt, tho a 20+1 would have been nicer. 7 or 8 rounds doesn't do it for me, at least as a duty weapon.

Good point. I’m not too sure. I am not LAPD and my agency authorizes open too mag pouches. However, I have seen a picture of STI mags In Safariland closed top slim line mag pouches. I’ll see if I can find it.

STI Edge is a 5" gun. Tactical is 4.15".

Why not carry a 3k pistol on duty? So you can keep it in a safe so it does not get a scratch? If you were to carry that high end gun for 20 years you got your money out of it and a heirloom.

Never thought of it that way......

But I did know a couple of old timers who went 10-8 with 6 " Pythons in clam-shells back in the day. We had model 15s with break-fronts then. They'll never sell near 3K after 30 years! May be Rick Grimme's on the Living Dead

The heck with a G-Shock, why spend that kind of money when a $18 Casio worked just fine in patrol. Plus, not everyone wants to wear a watch that makes your whole wrist disappear due to how large it is. And before anyone says it (wouldn't surprise me with this crowd), no, I do not have a petite size wrist.

LAPD approved STI only in 9mm and can't have compensators.
So, its Tactical 4.0 & 5.0, Edge, Maurader, DVC Limited (black) and couple more.

People are using Safariland, Ted Blocker, Don Hume. =)

You can all save money on watches and just don’t wear one. I never do. Never had much use for it. I just pull out my phone for timed event like the Romberg.

I’d still prefer my G17 5th gen with the Glock factory “Big Stick” 24-round magazines. (The 33-rnd one’s sticks out too much).

I just need a reliable hicap gun (“work horse”) that goes bang every time and not a fashion statement piece holstered on my hip. Besides, at $2,000-3,000 a piece for an STI, I could buy anywhere between 5-7 more Glock models at “Blue label” pricing.

Any idea where one could pick up a 5.0 STI? They seem to be out of stock everywhere!
