Default Did I just narrowly missed a bargain or a scam?

I saw this ad on another forum:

Quote:
Romanian built PSL 54C 7.62 X 54R Auto loading Military Rifle Imported by c.i.a. from Romania. All original finish no rust, no cracks in wood and bore is mirror, the metal has just a few very small handling marks. All numbers match on gun. Comes with Papers,2 Magazines total, magazine pouch, cleaning kit and tools,Bayonet , Range finding scope, scope cover, Feel free to make an offer. I will sell the gun For any questions please ask.
$900 shipped.
Knowing how Century had these for sale at $2000, I was getting excited and wrote to the guy. I started researching here about the ammo, etc.

Here are the pics he initially sent:

I thought I maybe, just maybe, want to see a different angle of the gun and asked for a picture of the bottom of the receiver looking at the closed bolt, etc. to make sure he is right about the rifle being all original, etc. I asked him for pic of the receiver bottom.

So he sent me these pics:

I noted the magazine release and the trigger are different, but he could have done some mods after he first took the first set of pics. OK

Then I noticed the spacing on the spot welds on the receiver above the magazine dimple is different between the picture sets. I thought, hmmm
Then I see the magazine dimple stamping on the second set of pics is not as sharp as on the first
Then finally I noticed the grain pattern on the stock is different! Unh Unh

Not only he didn't send me the correct views, but I got the feeling the pics are not from the same gun. So I told him I'm going to pass on it. He is somewhere back East.

Do you guys feel I missed out on a deal , or did I do the right thing ? I could have strung him along and ask him for more of this or that to waste his time, but I just don't want to piss him off if he was a legitimate seller.

Another thing I noticed after I said "pass" is the poor spacing (after commas, etc.) and inappropriate capitalization in his original post. Very much not unlike those scam letters we get from the Prince of Nigeria, etc.

based off of the spot welds they appear to be two different guns

Based on your pictures those are not the same gun. Look at the pistol grip up near the trigger guard two entirely different stocks.

100% definitely a scam. Two different guns from three different ads.

Did you run those pics through Google image search? I bet you will find they were swiped from some other website somewhere.

Edit - here is where he stole the ‘lower only’ photos
https://www.gunauction.com/buy/10653491

Here is where he swiped the whole gun photos
http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=199802

SCAM!

EDIT - Caliguy93 beat me to it. Always run Google reverse image search if you suspect a scam.

The only authentic thing from Romania is Dracula.

Seriously, though, when we have decent guns available from reputable dealers why risk it?

Well, I admit, it was the low price that baited me

When I saw those PSLs that Century Arms was bringing in at $2000, I decided I'll wait for the Bren 2 BR in .308. But this one, at less than half the price, was enticing.

I already have a Robinson Arms VEPR .308 that is currently being "tuned" at Krebs Custom, but this PSL has a very different Dragunov-like look to it.

But, yes, if something sounds too good to be true . . .

Not sure if lol is serious.

The FS thread on arfcom is archived and was posted on 11/6/16...> 2 years ago.

The thread starter has been on arf since 7/2001, has 1100+ posts, >100 positive feedback on equipment exchange, and no negative feedback. Was last online there 9/10 this year.

Based on that, pretty obvious he's not the scammer.

"lol" was because the rifle was posted there as well. It's all over the internet

I believe that the same member (the legit one) cross posted those pictures when he was originally trying to sell it, including cross posting onto ar15.com
