Default I have a question for people who served in the Army or Marines in the sand box

I have a question for people who served in the Army or Marines in either Iraq and Afghanistan.

A relative of a friend claims, while in the Army, he spent 6 months alone on a mountain top in Afghanistan. This guy is a compulsive liar.

Does the Army or Marines leave people alone on mountain tops in either Iraq or Afghanistan? This guy is not the Carlos Hathcock type.

When I was in the Army they never sent anyone out alone.

Things he says that I believe are true (listed in descending order).

1) He served in the Army
2) He served in the Air Cavalry
3) He was an E5 (at least a field grade E5).

Things he says that I believe are BS (in no particular order because they are all BS).

*He was an infantry soldier (even though he didn't go to Ft Benning for basic training and his MOS was not 11x) and engaged the Taliban multiple times
*Helicopters are pulled into the air by vacuum.
*A wet towel wrapped around a canteen will cause the canteen to turn into a block of ice by evaporation in 100+ degree temperatures.
*He flew helicopters.
*He repaired helicopters.
*He was in Special Forces.
*He was in the CIA.
*He invented the MagnetoSpeed Chronograph and the guy who owns Magnetospeed stole it from him after he sent him the plans to build one. I told him the Swiss had it on their Oerlikon cannons back in the 1960s. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...m_Oerlikon.jpg
*If you look at a helicopter they can see you, but not if you don't look at them.
*The Taliban has artillery and an airforce.
*He is a sniper.

For proof of his claims, he has pictures of helicopters parked on a runway, and his mother as a witness. I guess she followed him around Iraq and Afghanistan 24 hours a day.

He has a semi-auto M4 that he says is made up the same way as the M4 he carried while in the Army. It has an EOTech sight in line with an Aimpoint sight and an Aimpoint magnifier. Yes, all 3 in line, and none work. He also has a vertical foregrip. I never saw him shoot it. He brings it to the range and just talks about how bad-arsched he is.

If you served in the Military, you probably ran into someone like this guy.

Haven't served since '74, but one of my best friends was placed on a hill top behind enemy lines in Viet Nam and he stayed there for a few months, photographing enemy movements. So, I would imagine it happens.

Clearly a liar. I never understood people like this. I had a buddy from highschool join the Army and after a few years I joined myself. He was always a liar and I thought maybe he'd grown up a bit after serving a few years. I ended up at the same post as him and we met up a few months later. Within a few minutes he was right back to lying again. Told me he carried a Barret 50 cal on patrol, that he was an E6, etc. It's like dude, you know I'm currently active duty and know you're full of s***, right?

They're called professional bullsheit artists. Some are very entertaining and can really lay it on deep. Kinda like cowboys sitting around the campfire telling tall tales and trying to outdo one another. It's almost an art form. I've seen plenty of them in my 35+ year association with the Navy.

Stolen Valor comes in many forms, even from men and women who had done service.

I had guy who was a compulsive liar and would even lie to your face with overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Caught him taking tools out of my friends tool box at work and putting them in his as he was getting fired for using his government credit card and among other things he did.

Caught his a** lying to me and a friend and I was his PLT SGT about signing in for the weekend. He wasn't there that day and I knew it. He said that wasn't me. I called BS.

He lied about crap in Iraq as well. He bragged he took a .50 cal up a tower in Mosul to "save the FOB". Yeah another BS lie.

I can go on.

Here’s the most believable deployment story I got:

Bagram Air Force Base is sectioned off into different camps.
Each camp has its own chow hall. The weekly menu didn’t really match day to day between them.

So a few of use would bounce around following chicken wing night.

Eventually too many were doing it so they started checking camp ID. So you had to work at the camp or billet there. If you were lucky you didn’t sleep where you worked and at least had two choices.

Now that’s a real veteran story.

If he claims he was infantry, and he didn't go to Benning, he is a liar.
If he claims he was infantry, and he is not 11B, he is a liar.
If he talks about Special Forces, or being CIA, he is probably lying.
Ask him what his ASI was for being a sniper, and what was the qual course for it.
If he says anything but B4, and SOTIC, he is a fking liar.....

I don't know about our current or recent AOs, but you can start pulling his covers with those questions...

That's not wrong but not the way you would typically describe it. Helos swing their "wings" in a circle, but they opperate on the same principle as a fixed wing: The top surface is humped thus the air flowing over the top of it has a further distance to travel than the air flowing over the bottom. This creates a lower air pressure on the top. Higher pressure on the bottom pushing the wing up, lower pressure on the top pulling the wing up.

Both wrong.

Helicopters are so ugly they repel the earth.

It’s called beating the air into submission or “muscle F-ing” your way through flight.

Vacuum has no power to do anything. I learned that in physics class. The higher pressure on the bottom provides the lifting force.

In the National Guard, you can reclass to Infantry and not have to go to Benning. I forget where they offer it, but I want to say its a few places. I'd look it up but I can't look at ATTRS catalog from home anymore.

There is also 11C, mortars, and there used to be 11H but I think they phased that our in the late '90s or early 2000s.

But yeah, if he was SF he'd be 18 series, and nobody goes anywhere alone, you always have at least a buddy. Now granted, I remember in Iraq, one night pulling tower duty a lone dude approached our tower, I met him part way up the stairs, he was a sniper who was going to post up in the empty tower next to us and wanted to give us a heads up that he was going to be there, he didn't have a spotter with him or anything, those towers were pretty cramped, but leaving the wire? oh hell no, you ain't going anywhere alone.

All in all, dude is a compulsive liar and should be ignored.

I didn't think about the gaurd or reserves, Rero. I was looking at it from a RA perspective (30 years ago)....

BTW, you get CSMG yet?

Snoopy47, I had a similar situation in Kyrgyzstan. Two of the chow halls were in cantonment and one was out at the flight line. The flight line chow tent cooks used leftover lobster to make lobster bisque which was better than the Sunday lobster dish. People without a flight line pass tried bribing their friends to bring bisque back to cantonment for them. It must have been 50% lobster and 50% butter because it sure was good.

Howie: not yet brother, I submitted my packet for the academy on the 15th. If they accept me this go around then I’ll start the academy sometime next spring or summer. The academy takes two and a half years. I’ve heard conflicting information, that you become eligible for promotion to CSM upon finishing phase two (roughly at the two year mark) or that upon completion of the third and final phase you are promoted.

There is a chance that they also tell me to resubmit my packet next year and try again, so we shall see. I don’t become eligible for promotion with time in grade until July of 2021 anyway.

That may be a slight exaggeration, but we used canvas water bags that we'd hang on the mirrors. It kept water pretty damned cold even over 100 degrees out.

That's good to hear that you are still on track. In the meantime they'll have you fill the billet and do the work without the paygrade..
Good luck!

Forgot about the Mikes, back when they still existed I was in NY and we didn't have any Bradleys, and the few Hotels just had HMMWVs, as a scout, I had the blue bird bus from the armory to Ft Drum and back, everything on base was either in the back of an old deuce and a half or a 5 ton, or walking. mostly walking.

Now I'm a Light Infantry Company 1SG and its the same, walking everywhere, the supply SGT has a LMTV to go get chow and what not, and the Commander has a HMMWV to get to his various meetings, and that's it for the whole company.

Obviously a liar, and you should avoid people like that. No benefit in associating with those people.

My only question is what is a "field grade E5", I've heard of field grade officer but haven't heard of a "field grade E5"

Also his mom is his witness......LMAO how long is he? 12

When I ETS'd in 2004, as a 11C....I remember it was late 2001- early 2002 they phased all 11H, 11M into 11B, but even at 2004, they still were considered 11M or 11H apart from 11B kind of under unit's discretion.
11C survived, we did all of what 11B could do and was able to carry more shet like 60-81mm mortars, ammo and equipment.
Some 81mm and all 120mm were utilized by either humvees or Strykers.

I have never drank a colder, more refeshing, simply delicious mountain spring water than that which is spicketed out of a musty canvas bag hanging from a wood beam. The hydrational experience is complete if you serve that sweet nectar in a green plastic canteen that has a faint but satisfying hint of mothball.

This discussion made remember something hilarious. When I was issued all the battle rattle in BCT, my canteen cover was missing a snap that looked like it had been ripped off, fraying the flap area. As a result, I got yelled at over and over for having this ate up canteen cover, even though they gave it to me like that and wouldn't let me exchange it.

Only later did I realize that this was typical military training 101, where you are given a problem that has no solution, and the goal is not to solve the problem, but to simply keep your wits about you and not be a whiny quitter.

And don't forget about the number of those thirty people that were too lazy to go to the Port-a-sh**ter in the middle of the night and never used those canteens for water.

If you "reclassed" to 11 series and never went to Benning and never actually earned the blue cord, you are 100% not Infantry.

So basically you're asking a rhetorical question then.

thats what I felt at the time too but apparently the Army had it like that. Few years later he goes OCS and reclasses again. to supply. But he deployed as infantry, has his CIB just as I do.

When I joined reserves and reclassed to PsyOp I was technically still 11B till my very last day in because the Army was dragging its feet awarding me the new MOS even after psyop school. The only other time I had a chance to wear class A's and I still rocked my blue cord

Off topic, but someone crapped in the Water Buffalo at CSTX FT Irwin last year. took down an entire training area that used it for a water source.

Caught an old classmate who was an avionics tech in the air force telling a group of friends his 'war stories.' One was a bad version of the movie Blackhawk Down, dude falling out of their helo and all.
