Looking at the embercast over Christmas Valley and the wind forecast for tonight, there's a good chance the fire will be in Nevada by midday tomorrow. Hopefully SLT will be saved.

I caught that new camera up at Heather Circle earlier, the time lapse showed them setting it up. Sure are a lot of headlights moving around in an evacuated area; tonight's going to be rough for structure protection....

Ok- probably a silly question
Most of these ski resorts have the ability to make snow!

So they have large pumps and pump lake water uphill and out of giant hose nozzles.

Would this help save trees at kirkwood?

08-31-2021 7AM Caldor Fire Incident Update

Size: 191,607 Containment: 15%

Situation Summary:

Overnight fire activity remained active throughout the northeastern and eastern areas of the fire due to poor humidity recovery. Crown fire runs and ember casting remained active covering distances of up to three quarters of a mile. Lower elevations of the fire saw strong down canyon winds that tested control lines in Divisions A and D. The current red flag warning remains in effect through 11:00 p.m. on 9/1/21.

To better provide public and firefighter safety due to extreme fire conditions throughout Northern California, and strained firefighter resources throughout the Country, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing a temporary closure of nine National Forests. This closure will be effective on August 22, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. through September 6, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. The closure order can be found at https://tinyurl.com/USFSClosure.

They used the snow making blowers at sierra at Tahoe. I would think kirkwood too.

They showed a snow making machine at Sierra Tahoe on the news last night blowing water up the hill towards spot fires. I think at Sierra they pipe water down from Lower Echo Lake.

Seems there would be a way to mount those on tanker trucks that mix fire retardant and pump it to a similar nozzle, and use them along highways. They could keep rotating them to water sources.

Meh. They'll probably say they don't have the money.

Flight radar looks like there are helicopters dropping water on the fire near Kirkwood today.

Thats a really cool site. Flight paths look like the helicopters are refilling at Silver Lake. Hope they continue all day and are able to stamp it out good.

Those pilots are amazing. Praying for their safety.

Amen!

I am praying we make it out of this fire without (further*) death.

There are no deaths officially associated with the Caldor Fire as of yet, and they are appropriately not counting Officer Harminder Grewal's death as part of the fire event, but he was driving up to assist with the efforts when he was killed, and as such I feel should be honored.

A Galt police officer who was involved in a vehicle crash last weekend as he and a partner were traveling to assist with the Caldor Fire has died, the department announced Friday morning.

Officer Harminder Grewal died Thursday evening following a head-on collision Sunday morning on Highway 99, the Galt Police Department said in a social media post.

Grewal had been hospitalized in intensive care since the incident, which also killed the driver of the other involved vehicle, identified as Manjot Singh Thind, 25, of Manteca.

Grewal's partner, Officer Kapri Herrera, also suffered serious injuries and was in an ICU in "critical, but stable condition," the department said in an update earlier this week.

Grewal, a 2 1/2-year department veteran, is survived by his mother, father and brother, the Police Department said.

"He made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his duties as a public servant, responding to danger," the department wrote in a statement. "Officer Grewal took pride in serving his community and his work ethic was contagious to all who worked with him. His service to our community will never be forgotten."

The Police Department said a procession Friday from Elk Grove to Lodi along southbound Highway 99 will begin at about 10 a.m.

The deadly crash happened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near Dillard Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Dodge Ram pickup truck heading southbound hit the center median, broke through a barrier and struck Grewal and Herrera's patrol vehicle, which was traveling about 70 mph, the CHP said. The two officers had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Now don't I feel silly.

Your point is well made - thank you. The Dixie fire is still a serious problem: burned well over three-quarters of a million acres, only 48% contained and has been burning since July 13, 2021... and sadly many other serious active fires along with some new fires since the start of the Caldor are problematic.

Hell, at the rate this fire is going, they'll be evacuating Salt Lake City in couple of weeks.

Is there anything to burn East of Minden?

Hopefully these evacuations are out of an abundance of caution.

Looks like CALfire ran out of stuff to burn on sly park... And my house was spared.
Still covid sick as a dog, but now there's less to stress on.

Praying for everyone else still in danger.

I pray you get better, and yes praying for the safety of everyone fighting the fire and still in it's path.

It looks like we have a victory on the west front, in particular along the Sly Park. Lots more clean up and hard lines to be built and some areas in the 'island' that are not stubbornly resisting efforts to be put out but hopefully they'll have all that buttoned up soon.

Early morning view of the South Lake Tahoe area from Armstrong Lookout. What was eerie watching the time lapse was the star field moving and then I saw a couple stars start moving in strange directions. I sat for a few moments transfixed and then realized it was the CalFire mapping plane's navigation lights. Heh. Too early in the morning!

Main bad news I see this morning is the wind shifting more to the north from northeast and pushing the fire more directly towards SLT. Also, there's a northwestern SLT flank developing north of 50 and the winds are blowing pretty fierce up there right now...

One sobering statistic I heard yesterday and was easy to confirm on the SAR map was that the fire has now run over 40 miles from west to east. I just measured it and the ruler came back with 44.4 miles. Mind boggling.

Yeah its really sad. But all the resources were focused on trying stop it from spreading to the west because that is where a lot of homes are. I dont know when they started using airtankers to drop retardant, but seems like they couldnt get any deployed until at least a week.

Some early reports from the 15th before it exploded had air assets on it, but then apparently left it at that and didn't bring in anything to mop up. If true, fatal error.

Looking at this afternoon's map, the winds have picked up again and the northwest fork of the eastern flank is making quite a run across the relatively unpopulated wilderness to the west of SLT. Unchecked, it could pop over the top into the Emerald Bay area. Hopefully the weather will moderate and humidity recovery will improve and it'll die off in the wilderness before getting there.

Caldor Fire News Release

RELEASE DATE: September 1, 2021 4:00 p.m.

WHAT: Evacuation Orders Downgraded to Evacuation Warnings
WHEN: Effective Immediately
WHERE: El Dorado County

The following Evacuation Orders in the areas of North Camino and Pollock Pines described below have been downgraded to an Evacuation Warning:
North of Highway 50, West of Sly Park, South of Slab Creek, and East of Larsen Drive / Snows Road.

NOTES:
El Dorado Irrigation District officials request that evacuated residents with water service provided by EID consider running internal taps for a couple minutes upon returning to ensure fresh water in their homes. Water that has remained in service lines during evacuation periods can result in customers detecting taste and odor issues that may be easily addressed by flushing the taps. EID’s water is safe to drink. The main distribution system piping was not affected by fire and the integrity of the overall system has not been affected, as confirmed by its ongoing and rigorous water quality testing program.

All previous evacuation orders and warnings remain in effect.

A mandatory evacuation order is defined as an immediate threat to life. This is a lawful order to leave now. The area is lawfully closed to public access.
