Hearing Protection while Hunting
So I’ve been looking into hearing protection while hunting . It seems most people simply don’t use any sort of hearing protection . Ive been guilty of this for years . I thought you were just supposed to tough it out . Stupid . You can’t repair your ears once damaged tho . So I’d love to hear y’all’s opinion on the matter and maybe what you use to protect your hearing from gunshots in the field ...

While hunting birds, I use Walker noise cancelling ear buds.

While bird hunting in a group, I was once yelling at a buddy because he was shooting over a bush pretty close to another hunter's head without knowing. He had plugs under muffs and couldn't hear a thing. The rest of the trip we told him he wasn't allowed to use hearing protection. I never used to use anything, but I just got a pair of noise-cancelling muffs and will be using those in the future.

If prairie dogs etc... ie; many shots, noise cancelling muffs.
Deer or hogs, nothing. It's a shot or two out in open air, no range shed or anything to trap the noise so I just don't. I can't say it's the right thing to do, probably isn't, but none of the guys I hunt with wear them in the field either.

I use Surefire sonic defenders EP3 or EP4's when I bird hunt. Always always try to use earpro if it is safe.

I like the Walker ear buds.
What really got my attention was the first time I hunted in a pit blind. Two people shooting from that little metal box rang my clock. I have used the Walkers since; they work well. I also like them when shooting skeet, sporting clays. For deer hunting, in same boat as ACfixer. |

Ducks = electronic muffs so I can hear my blind mates and the birds calling
Dove = foam plugs Upland with other hunters = electronic muffs, again so I can hear the other hunters or birds flushing Squeaks = foam plugs and muffs, esp when shooting center fire, otherwise just foam plugs I also wear eye protection in every shooting/hunting scenario |

Just my observation.....
While hunting from a blind, when you take your shot you stick your gun out of the blind window. This seems to cut out most of the worst of it. Talking about 1 or 2 shots deer hunting. My ears weren't ringing at all and I am sensitive to gunfire to a large degree. Don't know if it was the adrenaline or the nylon barrier. |

Blind hunting ducks or group hunting dove, I use ear buds. No ear protection when out for deer, or jumping ducks, quail, rabbits or dove.

It was the adrenaline.
Read up on auditory exclusion. I use Radians Cease Fire Plugs while hunting, I put them in before I shoot if I'm expecting to shoot. They are only NRR 7 and are not adequate protection for gunfire. I've worn Peltor Tac Sport active ear muffs while duck hunting, but often wear foam plugs as they are more comfortable and let me wear awesome big hats. I've shot a deer or two while not wearing earplugs; I much prefer to put plugs in if possible. While it may seem like the report is not that loud I know it is, and I know it is possibly damaging. I hang out with too may old def guys to think I'm immune. Ultimately, if I could hunt with a suppressor I'd be willing to build an 18 barreled .308 specifically for such a pursuit.

^^^Not that even with a suppressor ear pro is still needed. 308 is plenty loud as is 460 Bushmaster (the two I have experience with) to need ear protection.
Silencerco Hybrid can. Even suppresed 22lr, if the backstop is close enough, has a loud sonic boom I prefer earpro on. With winter approaching and the leaves off the trees I've noticed the natural sound dampening of trees is diminished. |

"Huh, what did you say?"
Nothing when I was a kid. Now I use electronic Howard Leights for ducks, deer, pigs, pheasant, and dove. Heck they are cheap so my boys and I always have some spares around. I wore them for 8 days straight this last deer season and yes, they became uncomfortable where the muffs pinched my glasses to my head, but it was a lot less comfortable than ears ringing or going deaf (finally fired a shot on day 8). When it rains, switch over to walker buds and an Elmer Fudd hat with ear covers. |

I use the below
https://www.earplugstore.com/blshearpl.html my friend use the below he has large ear canals. https://www.earplugstore.com/blastbu...-earplugs.html I can hear normal sounds but have 19 NRP protection when I shoot. No batteries to replace. Cheap to buy a few of them. I only use them when hunting, at the range I use higher NRP rating plugs or ear muffs Ethan |

Thanks for recommending these . Is there any difference as far as performance between the premium and the standard or just the size and price ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Zip. What did you say? Maybe if I started waterfowl hunting from a blind with others again. Buddy uses the walker buds for upland but I don’t know anyone else who does.
I can’t stand anything in my ears for an extended time. Ear pro muffs on the shotgun range and Xmas tree style under that if indoor range. |

I try. I have them on me all the time when using firearms. But my 12-gauge has a 30" barrel so the noise is pretty minimal back where my ears are. Low-brass is pretty tolerable. High brass needs a little something. I rarely shoot slugs. Rifles, I keep them on my neck but if I have to choose between watching a deer trot away at 20 yards and taking an unprotected shot, I'm taking the shot.
The nice thing about air rifles and archery is that I don't need them at all -- one less thing to fuss with. |

I always use some kind of ear protection. After playing drums in a loud rock band for years, I really don't want the constant ringing in my ears to get any louder.
I'll use Christmas trees, sometimes walker muffs (to amplify critter movements) until they give me a headache from pinching eye protection. But, I really like the kind that are for loud music/rock concerts, they're fairly passive until the shot. Someday I might get the fancy amplified buds. |
