tough to compete w/ companies like turners & bass pro - they have the economies of scale thing working for them & can absorb rough patches of sales, laws, rent/expenses etc much easier than traditional mom & pops - my favorite shops have closed over the years - being able to buy online is all but dried up in ca - tough being part of the militia in ca - been wondering how much tyranny & infringement we will take???

In my opinion it was never a very high markup business anyway ( compared to things like jewelry stores or commercial alarm system companies for example) so you have to work with volume sales and repeat loyal customers. Without that it's going to be tough
enough just dealing with California and federal paper work , the cost of store security and so many other issues just to stay afloat. |

Very common. When a large chain opens a store in your town, several mom and pop stores are forced to either change or close. When Guitar Center came to the Antelope Valley, Palmdale Music, Mario's Music, Music Center Palmdale and Music Center Lancaster all closed their doors.
When Turner's came here, all the local gun shops took a major hit.

Turners is not the problem. The problem is how unfriendly the laws are in this state, which makes running a gun store economically unviable. In a normal state, larger retailers like Sportsman's Warehouse coexist with FLGS and everyone is able to make money.

Home Depot had nothing to do with it, and Orchard wasn’t “Mom & POP”.
Sears owned Orchard and spun it off in 2013. Sears had sold Craftsman tools to Stanley, Black and Decker, who placed them in Orchard. Lowe’s picked up Orchard, along with the franchise for Craftsman tools, and ran it into the ground before closing all stores in 2018. Stanley then moved the Craftsman franchise to Lowe’s. It’s not driving the competition out, it’s buying the competition, stripping its valuable resources, and killing it. Microsoft did this for years to protect its software products.

The owner of a local gun store I frequent recently said "I would sell my business tomorrow if I could, but nobody wants to buy a gun store." Guns themselves are generally a low-margin item. Most of his money comes from ammo and accessories. Now the state laws are taking a hit on his ammo business, and he can't compete on price with accessories from online vendors. There's not much left on the table.
Something to think about when you find that scope for $15 less online. |

Turners never seemed to impact rifle gear or ammo bros.
I understand turners sells a lot of guns. They also sell a lot of fishing gear and outdoor gear. If you are outsold by turners based in sales acumen and product knowledge you have a real issue internally. That said turners is continually upping their game since the new ownership took over.

So, here's an example.
Roughly 2-3 months ago, I went to the Reseda store to look at a Marlin lever action .357/.38. It was a Wednesday Discount Club Members advertised sale (that was emailed to me) for $659, if I remember correctly. The store did not have one in stock (nor did any of the Turners that were close to me) and I was told I would need to make a nonrefundable deposit of $180 and if I ended up not liking it, I would have to buy another gun with the $180 and that no refund would be issued. I did not care for that policy and decided not to buy it. Advertising it, but not having it in stock and potentialy forcing the customer to spend money (that should be refunded) on something else just didn't seem right to me. It's almost like a bait and switch situation in my opinion. I've bought quite a few guns there before and the salesman I usually deal with knows me (and my brother, who also has bought quite a few guns there) well. As far as I'm concerned, the above policy does nothing but deter me from buying from or even stepping inside of Turners. No more trips to Turner's to see if there's anything I'd like to buy before I go hunting, fishing or shooting. There are plenty of other places where I can spend money on the things I want. Perhaps a separate thread with a view of, “how do we (Turner’s) get better” would provide a consolidated collection point. Wear your flame suit, (but you might even get some positive feedback). Best.

Just about every cost a business faces is going up in price. A lot of our troubles in the USA can be traced back to currency inflation conducted intentionally by the central bank. With each dollar worth less, the prices of everything go up. Add to that the anti-gun laws and regulations in Calif. and it's a losing game for all but the largest gun stores or chains, but even they are going to have a hard time in a currency inflation environment, especially since workers will keep demanding wage increases to keep up with all the consumer price inflation. Turners might fail too. It might be that "big enough to survive" is something akin to Amazon.com's size. But the biggest retailers (Amazon.com and Walmart) seem to be weak to anti-gun pressure and would probably cave easily to organized pressure from the Social Justice Warriors on the left. |

turners might suck at some things but atleast when they see a customer they ask if you need help. ammo bros was always my go to but lately they seem to have been lacking on good customer service. dont leave someone waiting for over half an hour especially when you have other employees just standing around.
