Default Budget Long Range scopes.

Long Range Shooters,

I am looking for a budget 200-500 dollars long range scope for my 30-06 Long Range Remington 700. Nikon FX 1000, are between $456-650 range, does anyone have experience with Mueller Optics? Could go with SWFA Super Sniper $250-$299, but new ones for the most part are all back ordered. What say you? A2

athlon makes great budget glass.
this is a bit more, but you could shoot $90 worth of ammo in a day.
call doug or joel over at camerland and see if they can do a deal or what they recommend.
what kind of reticle do you want? another option is used off sniperhide.

I would vote for something from SWFA. I've used the 10x at 1000 yards with great success often.

Vortex PST Gen 1 is still a good optic for the price range. Used SWFA for a second vote, the 10X is a great value. Funny how they still hold their price in the used market. A fixed 10, 12, or 16X Leupold will serve you well too.

I bought a benchrest Mueller for rimfire and sent it right back, not clear.

I bought an athlon benchrest scope not happy with it.

Swfa 10 12 16x
Bushnell engage 4-16
Weaver tactical 3-10 and 3-15
Bushnell nitro
Have all worked for me and shooting buddies in the "budget class"

Have you considered a used higher-end Vortex? If it's funky, Vortex will take care of it, their warranty program is awesome (personal experience there).

If your screen name is implying you have military service, the newer 5-25x Strike Eagle with 34mm tube is just over your stated budget with the Mil/LE discount. Worth doing a little YouTube research for yourself.

Two of my coworkers have them and both love it. I’ve looked through them and the optics are really nice & clear. I would call it a very good value for $$ spent.

If you can find a used Redfield Revenge 6-18, it is a phenomenal scope.
Redfield claims that they are tough enough to withstand .338 Lapua recoil.
I have one on my Savage 11 Varmint .308.

It sounds like cost is important to you, but I would suggest putting that aside initially and focus on your other requirements. What is the maximum range you plan on shooting, what magnification will you need. Do you want FFP or SFP? What type of reticle are you looking for, zoom or fixed power. Once you have the answer to those questions, then you can narrow down the models that have those features and then include cost to determine which one is best over all.

I ended up snagging a BTR ARES 4.5-27x50 for less than 5 bills last year. I thought it would be Gen1, but it has all the features of Gen2. For that price it’s hard to resist, but at regular price for some reason the Burris XTR seems clear even at a bit more $.

With the Athlon at highest magnification gets hazy. On a nice day sunny cool day, I say 20X is good, but most of the time 15X is max during a hot sunny day. The parallax adjustment is mighty stingy. The turret clicks aren’t very positive, but OK if you pay attention to the turret hash marks.

I'm content with my Falcon M18+, FALM181 is what I have. I'm no long range shooter, but I got this with the hope of using it as a budget scope for a budget long range build.

So a lot Of optics offer great clarity and will hold zero

They will not hold up to a lot of turret spinning.

If you use mil dot or hash mark for holdover- most cheaper scopes work

If you will use the turrets a lot, many of the gears will fail the box drill fairly quickly.

Tell us more about your shooting?
Dot holdover or turret spin?

If you want something cheap with good glass and turrets I would get something fixed power personally. Check out Tiborasaurus Rex on youtube, he has some good recommendations for getting into LR.

Meopta is worth a look. I'm looking for something in the 3x to 20x range for a 17HMR and I'm liking the info.
The Optika5 line has a 1" tube and if you're OK with that it looks pretty solid.
If I were going after something more ferocious than a squirrel, I would look at MeoPro or Optika6 lines.
Meopta has been making glass for something like 100 years. They contract manufacture for some big names in optics. Good stuff.

Jim, You are spot on. Meopta makes glass for a number of big name companies who I won't name. I have the Otika5 4-20x50 on a .17 HMR and love it. I could only get the ZPlex reticle and not the Zplus (MOA) at the time I got mine. I have a ZPlus on order right now. Very clear and bright glass. posititve tactile clicks and built tough. Here's a pic of mine of my Remington 700 SPS .308 before moving it to my .17 HMR. I do some freelance work with Meopta and I couldn't be happier with the quality of product that they provide the customer. Feel free to drop me a note if you have any Meopta questions. By the way, they have an excellent LE/Mil program.

Not the trendy option, but Bushnell products in that range are quite nice for the cost and are proven to last under real world use.

My question is; strictly for bench use? Or are you a hunter? The answer to that question may govern here.

Trijicon and Zeiss

Quote:
After the end of the Cold War, Meopta reorganized and began supplying OEM optical equipment around the world. In fact, Meopta is the largest European OEM producer, and many well known brands such as Trijicon and Zeiss utilize their products.

In all, Meopta has built a reputation as a source of quality European glass without jumping into the price point of Swarovski, Schmidt & Bender, Kahles, or other top-end manufacturers. However, they’re primarily known for hunting optics rather than tactical. They’ve never broken out in the US market due to a combination of lackluster marketing and features that were behind the curve of other offerings.
