What model did you get?
I have a Mesa Long Range in 300prc. Only done a little loading for it but easily 3/4 moa so far. Also have a Ridgeline in 6.5prc that I haven't shot yet. I have about 5 6.5creedmoors and it is very difficult to get any of them to shoot over 1 moa, even the AR. I am sure your's will shoot plenty fine for hunting. |

http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1792560 Honestly, I don't hunt elk and so have no opinion. 6.5CM killed my pronghorn dead, though. ![]()

I think CA makes a fine rifle and a 6.5 CM is excellent for deer, pronghorn, pig; even better if you reload. You definitely can kill an elk with one- lots of people do it, however it's not enough gun for elk without a clear broadside shot or at extended ranges (over 300 yards.)Will you reload? What are you hunting? Which CA model?

Thanks, Yes my friend will be reloading my brass, friend is a guide and all he hunts with is a 6.5 all the way up to Elk. I went with the Mesa I will se how I like it for now just trying to find range time with it. I might get the Ridgeline in 6.5 PRC also.

I really don't understand the desire to go "under-gunned" for something on the order of elk.
Sure, it will kill and even collect in proper conditions. Are you willing to pass on other conditions where more gun wouldn't be as compromised? Guides, depredations guys, etc. can easily pass up on shots where the conditions aren't right for a clean kill. They know they'll have better options in the near future. Hunter Bob, not so much. I grew up around (still have) .264 Win Mag. There were plenty of write-ups declaring it a "varmint cartridge" capable of medium game. At the same time there was a professional (state) hunter in charge of thinning the herd (elk) on Winter range so the rest wouldn't starve. He used a .264 quite effectively. But he could choose his shots and "buck fever" died in him long ago. Huge difference between a guy immersed in the environment with a mountain of kills vs. Hunter Bob on his expensive dream trip.

That's a nice rifle. CA makes nice rifles and many say they make some of the best carbon fiber barrels. I'm actually shooting a .260 AI which is similar to a 6.5CM. I'd say a 135-140 Berger or 143 Eld X over H4350 are great. If hunting CA, I'd say the Barnes 127 LRX is great. Should be a nice rifle, what scope is going on it?

How many elk do you have under your belt?
How long will you be afield? Forested or open country? Roosevelts or Rocky Mountain elk? (more or less defining distances encountered). I see you're in Newport. How disappointed will you be if you don't convert? Just saying few can put themselves in a similar position to say a guide, professional hunter in ability to select their opportunities and walk away from lesser ones. The again we have members with elk on their back 40 and they can afford to be quite selective as "Hunter Bob".

Backfire tv on YouTube has some interesting videos on the 6.5 cartridges and the effects on larger animals. They failed him pretty poorly in the field on large game and the follow up ballistic gel tests show how poorly they actually performed. Worth watching if your serious about taking it for big game. The guy is a legit shooter and you can hear about his experience on different African game.
I’m also a believer on proper shot placement and accurate shooting but at a certain point massive bone and muscle mass can get overwhelming against smaller rounds. Last edited by deckhandmike; 05-15-2022 at 7:40 AM.. |

This isn't rocket science;
Large game = Large size caliber Medium game = Medium size caliber Small game = Small caliber The 6.5 is an excellent round if it's matched to the above. Shot placement is a good thing but sometimes sh--t goes south especially with a new hunter, happens to experienced hunters as well. How many crippled bull's have you seen walking on 3 legs because the center punch shoulder shot didn't have enough power? The shot placement was excellent, absolutely perfect, but not enough rifle.... |
