Ha. Sweet. Just started working on setting up a few various bags for different parts of the house/truck/bob/etc. Was having trouble coming up with a few of the ideas and remembered seeing this thread a while back. Helpful!
Planning stages are boggling my mind with how much I'm going to spend! Good times! |

I should have noted that I include weapons and ammo into that price. One good rifle, a pistol and a couple hundred rounds of ammo plus the supplies for 3 days will put you at 2K easy if you buy everything new. A Mini-14 and Glock 19 alone will eat up half that.

Great thread guys. I have been meaning to put together a Bug-Out-Bag (or Earthquake kit for those wanting to keep a low profile).
I have taken tons of info from this thread and put it into a LONG list. I didn't really include firearms or ammo as that would be something to grab out of the safe when the time arises. I just Looked up prescription meds online. I've never bought stuff like this to have on-hand. I've always gotten meds by going to the doctor AFTER I was sick and getting a prescription.
Is this typical behaviour?? Can I get a prescription from my local Doc and have my insurance cover it (just paying the co-pay) or is that frowned upon?? How do you guys get prescription antibiotics in bulk or ahead of time?? Buy it through Canada and pay full price??

I too would like some info. This online prescription thing is ALL new to me. Also, if you are required to have a prescription, how do you get one if you are NOT currently sick??

What prescription?
I simply ordered 2 boxes (6 pills/box) from www.alldaychemist.com It spent some time in Customs here... In total, took about a month to receive it (shipping+customs time). The 12 pills cost $6.28, shipping was $24.90.

If I may, I'd like to point at the Zippos and say "leave those out" unless you carry your pack in a car.

Also a note about lighters. Ive smoked for way too long and know a bit about lighters, Bics are where its at. If you put some of those cheap adjustable lighters (prone to failure) in your BOB you just may end up cold and pissed you didnt buy a 5 pack of bics for about 5 bucks.

Leaks, you may be better off leaving the Zippo dry and including a well sealed bottle of fuel.
ETA: Unless its pretty windy a BIC cant be beat, they are good for thousands of reliable lights. Zippo fuel will evaporate.

I like the idea of leaving the zippo's empty (I have three that have never been used) then just keeping a sealed bottle of fuel with each. Is a NEW sealed bottle of fuel in a zip-loc bag good enough or is there something more that would need to be done to seal it?? I like there ability to light in the wind plus, I think they have a decent trade value if needed.

If its a flip top type bottle I would duct tape it closed and make sure it wouldnt be squeezed too much.

Makes sense, I will probably put it inside a baggy and put that inside of a hard-sided dry box.

What thread are we writing to, "Ladies' Tolerance"? Sorry, but your first "suspicions" should be somethin' more... practical? What I look at, you wanna be able to CARRY your pack. What I look at, you wanna be able to use it, NO MATTER WHAT. A lighter lighter does the same thing a Zippo does. And if you don't have gasoline (that a Zippo could use = if you're not planning a strictly car-related pack), the biggest ferrocerium rod will be lighter than a Zippo, and will last longer.

anyone tried using a fire piston? I have one in addition to other types of firestarters. Youtube has a bunch of videos for DIIY or a nicer one www.fire-piston.com

OK, I got it guys. The Zippo's can be left at home. I just figured why not since I already have some. Plus, I have always liked zippo's in a nostalgic sort of way.
So, for fire, I'm looking at: Bics (2 per bag) Matches (in a sealed container) Magnesium Fire Starter

'Bics (2 per bag)
Matches (in a sealed container) Magnesium Fire Starter ' I would like to expand on your choices- Get 'strike anywhere' matches if you can- look for 'blue diamond' brand, seen them at local Ace hardware near me-they are wood matches. Make sure they are the 'STRIKE ANYWHERE' and not strike on box. Mag firestarter-great choice, can get them at the local G shows-some guy sells them for pretty cheap. ALSO-tried using the Magnesium anode rod sold for RV water heater use....it does burn but it must be an alloy because there are some long ash type stuff that floats off in the air instead of burning clean. but it is an option for a backup mag supply ,they are big rods and they have a built in threaded nut to use as a handle. Regarding BIC lighters--KEEP THEM IN A SEALED CONTAINER!!!---I had one blow up in my car once---got too hot in the car and the pressure built up and it blew..no fire thank god but it was a loud scary bang and plastic shrapnel all over.....glad I was just unlocking the car and the doors were still shut! Good luck for all of us and our BOB's --sucks that $$$ goes up like crazy if you dupe for each car and family member... |

It is crazy how much you can spend on this stuff ESPECIALLY buying multiples. I plan to have the most complete bag in my Jeep, then lesser bags in our Camry and at the house. As I get more funds the other bags will get completed just like my Jeep bag. As far as the BAG itself, I think for now I have some backpacks/gym bags i can use for now, but I think an ALICE LC-1 pack is what I will end up with. Just seems to be the best bang for your buck. I can't bring myself to spend $100 or more on a bag.

Next best thing is a "stage 2" in the car. For me, it makes sense to bug-in, because if something like an earthquake or zombie attack happens chances are high i will be 30+ miles from home (at work). And my home is where i have my longer term preperation, dog, family, etc. I carry what i need to survive an urban environment for the foot race home, and thats it. I want to get more ideas of things to pack, but I see too many "extras" in people's packs... if you plan on taking things that can only be useful in a very specific combination or specific situation, they're useless. In a stressful, dangerous, panic filled environment you will be carrying 30lbs of useless weight. You dont have to be a backpacker or solider to understand this. i'm kind of a hopeless, terse, minimalist. extremely good point. check points & bottlenecks. They'll have the numbers, its a losing battle. |

I'm also trying to figure out what SIZE bag(s) I will need. I wasthinking of ONE HUGE bag in my Jeep, then having a few smaller for other places (wifes car, house, work etc). But I am not thinking of using a small-medium sized bag in ALL instances. I like the idea of having AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE in my Jeep as it is with me nearly 95% of the time. Only time I would be without it would be my wifes car, and I just don't see bugging out too far in a Camry. I may try to have like 4 stage 1 kits (Jeep, Camry, House, Work) then a stage 2/3 also stored in my Jeep as well as one at the house. I would just like to avoid buying a really expensive (AND LARGE) bag if I can get away with smaller more manageable bags. I also like the idea of being as light as possible when carrying the bag, though I think it doesn't hurt to have an extra stage 2/3 bag in case you are NOT on foot (either mobile in the Jeep or staying at home).

Did not read all the post but if not recommended yet, Take a lot of moleskin because your feet may be tough but if bugging out on foot with the wife/kids expect blisters and hot spots. If their feet go down your stuck. You may invest in some of that blister guide too.
