Default My first 1911-80

Just wrapped up my first 1911 80%. I bought the frame and slide from 1911 builders and all the other parts from Wil$on Combat. There is more detail work that i want to do to the frame and slide but this is how far I am so far. And some where along the way I forgot to keep taking detail pictures

Your build looks really great. Did that grip safety come from 1911 builders and it fit the wilson combat fitting jig? Or did you use a wilson grip safety and jig?

I used all Wilson "Bullet Proof" parts. So yes that is a Wilson grip safety and jig, but using that jig only gets you so close. Once you pop the jig off that's where the real challenge comes in. There is plenty of sanding, stoning and even a little dremel grinding to do on the grip safety and frame. Way more work than I thought it was going to be. It was definitely intimidating but if you go slow and be patient its not so bad!

Nice. Wilson uses a special compounded radius, right? So you start by placing the safety rotated up as far as possible, lower a little at a time while seeing where it contacts and addressing those spots, right? Eventually it lowers all the way and you should have a nice tight fit. I never did one, so just wondering.

Test fire? I know there are no sights, but asking for functionality results.

As far as fitting the beavertail, I got it close with the jig and then I just went back a forth with marking the frame with a sharpie and trying to rotate the grip safety to see where the high spots were. At those points the sharpie would be worn off and I would use a 220 stone on those areas. I kept doing that until there was no sticking and it was smooth. So yeah, like you said.

I ended up puttin the Dawson precision sights on it. They look pretty good. I haven't test fired it yet, it's actually apart right now. I am going to flute the barrel. I went back and forth on if I should or shouldn't do it. Decide to do it and I practiced on my Springfield. I'll post pics if your interested.

I like it. Was it pure aesthetics, or does it serve some purpose? Asking seriously.

Just aesthetics...common sense tells me it's not going to help with heat, dust or any of that other stuff people say. I purely like the look.
