Default Cuyama 600 and the 800, 900 & 1000 yd matches November!

I don't know if I'll be out there, I'm still having trouble with my foot but the November 14th and 15th matches are scheduled.

We are now an electronic target range. The club utilizes ShotMarker targets. These targets eliminate the need for manning the pits and result in dramatically reduced match times. The targets are pretty sweet and allow you to focus hard on shooting and improving for the next match.

Saturday, 14 Nov

8:00am - 600 yd Mid Range, 60 Shots

12:00pm - 1,000 yd Long Range, 40 Shots

Sunday, 15 Nov -
8:00 am - 800/900/1,000 Palma, 45 Shots

We’ll try and wrap up squadding a few minutes prior to the start of the match. There’s no need to pre-register. Everyone will get a chance to shoot.

All of our matches are NRA approved and open to the public. Cost is $20 per match (for non-members) and includes $4.50 fee for score submittal to NRA. $5 discount for club members. NRA membership is not required to participate or to earn an NRA classification.

All are welcome to arrive Friday or Saturday and can camp on the property. If you are into running water there’s the Buckhorn Inn in New Cuyama and a couple of places in Taft. Both are about a 30 minute drive from the range.

The range is located east of CA33 about 3 miles south of the 33 and 166 juncture. Look for a green Palma sign east of 33 at the Foothill Rd intersection. Turn into the field and drive straight back to our shade structure. Please be mindful of the fields as they may be planted (stay on the well worn path).

Check Road Conditions: State Road 33, Interstate 5, State Road 166

All are welcome to arrive Friday or Saturday and can camp on the property. If you are into running water there’s the Buckhorn Inn in New Cuyama and a Motel 8 in Maricopa. Both are about a 15-20 minute drive from the range.

The range is located east of CA33 about 3 miles south of the 33 and 166 juncture. Just Google Map "Tri County Rifle Range, Maricopa". Look for a green Palma sign east of 33 at the Foothill Rd intersection. Turn into the field and drive straight back to our shade structure. Please be mindful of the fields as they may be planted (stay on the well worn dirt road). Any normal car will make it up the road easily, it's flat.

Check Road Conditions: State Road 33, Interstate 5, State Road 166

Bring all your safety equipment and a shooting mat, (although people will be glad to share if necessary). A good 100 yard zero (Look on JBM Ballistics to build a drop chart for the range that you are shooting. Use 100 yard increments out to 1,000 yards, The elevation at the range is 2,650 feet above sea level)

Yeah, this is Calguns, where everyone supposedly "wants" to shoot the mythical one-thousand-yards, but are too afraid to even take the first step.

correct sir

A good rifle, a good load, and a little math will get you to 1000 yards.

Good wind reading will get you better than a 180 score

Thank you guys for pushing us to get out there. Speaking for myself, I know I needed a bit of encouragement to get out and start shooting. My rifle is not yet ready, but my goal is to at least show up to observe and learn this year. I'll keeping checking back in this section regularly for updates, and I hope other newbies like me do too.

My rifle wasn't ready either but it was in a shootable condition with load work up done. Four years later the only thing left on the rifle that is stock is the action and bolt, everything else has been replaced a little at a time

It connects by bluetooth to your phone they'll have it on the firing line, no need to download anything.

Unfortunately, I have to fly to New Zealand on Sunday so I won't make the match.

Late update
We are now an electronic target range. The club utilizes ShotMarker targets. These targets eliminate the need for manning the pits and result in dramatically reduced match times. The targets are pretty sweet and allow you to focus hard on shooting and improving for the next match.

Match Schedule

Saturday, 18 Jan 8:00am 600 yd Mid Range, 60 Shots

Saturday at Noon - 800 - 1,000 yd LR Palma, 45 Shots

Sunday at 8:00 AM - 1,000 yards match - 40 Shots

Nice! Yes, E-targets are the greatest thing for simplifying matches.

No more 20 minute delays to change the target crew at the butts between relays. Everyone gets to socialize more on the line.

No more pasting new centers on the targets

No more trying to see the 22 caliber holes that hit the line with 60 year old eyes!

When the matches return, can a newbie come as a spectator?

From personal experience, just bring a rifle, rest or bipod and shoot. Everyone that I met is
Cool, laid back and helpful.

I would imagine you could watch.

Absolutely, everyone is welcome. We're actually working at the range this weekend on all the annual maintenance, new target frames etc. Hopefully we'll be shooting next month.

I have a Howa 1500 30.06 and Rem 700 in .06, my brother has a Rem 700 in .06 as well. All basically with 20 year old 2-10 / 3-9 Scopes. From our old deer hunting days. Whille I'm sure we could hit man size steel at 600 what's the odds of ringing steel at 1000 with factory ammo?

Ammo choice and having 30-something MOA of scope elevation are your most immediate need. Skip the 168gr loads and go with 175 or heavier match ammunition. The Federal GM 168's, even in 30.06, will peter-out well before 1K.

If you are referring to shooting in cuyuma they shoot paper not steel.
Higher mag scopes would be better for paper targets.

Not sure about factory ammo as I don't shoot factory ammo farther than 100 yards.

You may not have enough vertical adjustment on your scope to reach 1000 yards. You're going to need close to 40 minutes of vertical adjustment from your 100 yard zero.

You can check this at 100 yards by shooting your zero and see if you have enough adjustment to shoot 40" high at 100 yards.

You can cheat the elevation if you have a duplex or varmint scope reticle. On a Leupold scope the wide part of the Duplex reticle is 4 minutes of elevation lower than the cross hair so that if you use the top of the duplex as your aiming point you will need only about 36" of elevation. If you have a varmint reticle with 6 or 8 minute spacing that gives you another 6-8 minutes by holding with the bottom hash instead of the crosshairs.

You can also hold on the top of the Target black bullseye. It's 44" in diameter so it has a 22" radius from the center to the top of the bull. Holding at the top will get you another 2.2 MOA.

Bringing this to the top. It will be hot in the afternoons so bring water and head/neck coverings.

Saturday
8:00 AM, 600 yards - 60 rounds
12:00 Noon, 1,000 yards - 40 rounds

Sunday
8:00 AM, 600 yards to 1000 yards - 60 rounds

Bring at least 10 more rounds for sighters for each match.

Looking forward to this weekend, it'll be my first match and looks like I'll be camping out friday and saturday night onsite. Couple of questions for you guys that are familiar...

- Is the format similar to PRS where we need to be prepared to walk around self sufficiently (everything you need in packs, rifle bags vs hard cases) or will we be mainly shooting from a central location? I've got a few bags and a shooting mat that I'm planning on bringing as well as rangefinder.

- My wife shoots and we might be interested in shooting as a team, or both shooting seperately. Is this possible? We'd of course need double the ammo and need at least a shooter or two between us per round (and be in the same group). Maybe someone has done this before but I've seen folks share guns at USPSA before.

- I'll be shooting 300 win mag so am limited to 5rd magazines (I've got a couple extra). Anything to be aware of here? If mag changes aren't allowed on some stages I assume we'll be top loading?

I'm probably overthinking things but figure I'd ask these questions now. Going to be bringing a mix of 168/195 grain handloads that I've got dope from shooting out at Pala

NRA Highpower, shooting prone from a fixed position. Slow-fire, loading a single round at a time during the time period, generally 22-30 minutes depending on sighters and # of rounds per string. Just drop round on top of magazine follower. For sharing, one shooter does their string of fire while the other is scoring. Each shot is marked on the target and scored. This gives immediate feedback on accuracy and wind-calls.
I don't recall if they are using E-targets, if yes, bring smart phone or pad.
