You would like a AZ CCW as then you can legally CCW in certain common restaurants that also serve alcohol. You don't want to have to lock up your gun if your group decides hey let's go to Chili's. Probably not a bad thing to have if you get pulled over on reservation land too.

AZ CCW is good in Nevada.
CA CCW is not.

I recently moved from CA to AZ. I frequently travel through several States. The AZ non-resident permit allowed me to CC in most of those States while I was waiting for my CA permit to work its way through the system.
Now that I live in AZ, I can legally carry in more places that those without a permit can't (like restaurants that serve alcohol). There are also more States that have reciprocity with AZ resident vs non-resident, and more States than the CA permit, like NV.

Don't do it without knowing the limitations.

Mainly because, as a non resident, it's good in 30 other states, in addition to AZ.

The process to get one is so painless compared to CA, it's just a good idea even if you go to AZ or NV once a year.

There are also not as many restrictions on the AZ permit.
For example, no list of guns. You can legally carry any handgun that's not stolen.

I did the hunter safety class. It’s an 8hr class but you can do 4hrs online and attend a 4hr class. It’s killing two birds with one stone. Most states (e.g., AZ, FL, VA, etc) will accept the hunter safety certificate. The class was held at Bass Pro and only costed me $20 but you get a $20 gift card to Bass Pro once you pass. I used the gift card to purchase my hunting license.

I also did the hunters safety course. I did the online portion years earlier but never did the live class until I started this thread.

California permit only provides recognition by 27 other states. Out here in the western states, no recognition in NV, NM, CO, WY, ND, or MN
Adding AZ to the California permit covers CA plus 34 states, including NV, NM, WY, and ND.

CO is not possible for a CA resident.
Colorado does not recognize the CA permit, they do not recognize non-resident permits, and they do not issue non-resident permits.
It's a similar issue with South Carolina, but you can own any parcel of property to be issued a permit even if you are not a formal resident.

MN does issue non-resident permits, but honestly, once you have CA, AZ, and UT, anything else is only going to pick up one state at a time.
AZ grants NV, Utah grants WA.
Many (including MN and Oregon) must be presented in person.

Read sections "E" & "N", for information on what AZ considers qualifications for their CCW permit.

Actually, once you have California and either Utah or Arizona, you can only add one state at a time.

The only real exceptions would be if you have only California and Utah, getting Florida would add two states (Florida and New Mexico)

The other main exception would be if you throw an enhanced Idaho non-resident into the mix (have to apply in person and pick up in person) as it is accepted in Washington, Minnesota, and New Mexico (meaning you would add two states if you have Utah or Arizona already)

The biggest thing to remember though is that reciprocity changes. If you travel a lot, you are best obtaining what you can. I personally have CA, UT, AZ, FL, and NH and am looking at obtaining more.

The order I received them was UT, CA (was on a wait list), FL, NH, AZ...

So UT vs AZ? They're almost the same except for NM which AZ has.

I am thinking UT is more politically stable as far as 2A (less chance of rule changes) but does that matter?

This is why I chose the AZ permit.
I regularly travel CA, NV, UT, ID, WY, NE, IA MO, KS, OK, TX, NM, AZ. Occasionally CO & IL.
CA + AZ permits covered all but CO & IL.
Now that I've moved to AZ, I've gained CO & lost CA.
IL is still a no-no.

And Utah gets Washington, which Arizona does not. Solution: Get both!

I got Florida because the kids live there, and AZ because at the time, Nevada did not recognize FL. Now, other than for travel to FL, it is redundant to AZ.

UT is recognized by Washington, AZ is recognized by New Mexico. Do you spend more time traveling in the Southwest, or Northwest?
Quote:

UT is absolutely more stable, but with AZ being Con-Carry, I don't see them going all the way back to may-issue. The state may go blue, but they don't want to admit it and they will not give up their guns.

The biggest issue is changes in reciprosity agreements. Nevada added 5 states, and dropped one in 2016. These changes can happen with no widespread notice, so it is always helpful to have multiple non-CA permits to help stack the odds.

Of course, *ALWAYS* double-check local laws before traveling.

Don't spend money on a class... when you get your CA permit, a photocopy is all you need for AZ unless you have a DD214 or another NRA certificate.

I got my prints done at SBSD, but I needed LE to roll Florida. For AZ, you can get it done at the UPS store.

I went to a Live Scan office around the corner from our house (in CA).
They scanned my prints and printed them onto AZs cards.
Don't remember how much $ it was.
Did the Hunter Safety class.
That was it.

Wow, post 11 just saved me major $$$. Here i was about to pay a safety course provider some money for an AZ permit (plus the state fee) when I can just do it myself using my DD214.

Just got a packet from AZ, wanted to make sure I understand what I'm doing.
1. Fill it out.
2. Get your prints on 2 cards. Does it matter where? Does it have to be a livescan facility?
3. Get a safety course certificate. Can this be any course or certain number of hours required? Does it have to be specific to AZ?
4. Mail it in and wait?

1. Yes
2. Anyone Certified to roll prints in CA can do them. Livescan facilities can usually print out your prints onto appropriate cards.
3. See the AZ FAQ (ARS 13-3112.N.). Has to be a course they approve of; NRA certified instructor, hunting certificate, etc.
4. Yes. Current time from mail to receiving is about 30 days.

Yes, fill it out. Have your prints done by anyone who is a certified fingerprint roller in CA. It doesn't have to be at a livescan place. Use almost any current or expired CCW from almost any state, a DD 214, any certificate from a NRA or POST class, a hunter's safety certificate, etc. to satisfy the training requirement. Mail the packet in and wait for a week or three. If you need a class and certificate and/or your fingerprints rolled, shoot me a PM. I can help.

AAAGH! Hit a snag. Got my package back today with a rejection notice. Reason? The post office screwed up the date stamp on the money order, and I didn't catch it. She entered 181925. Who knew that there is no month 19? Oh well, she cut me a new money order (no charge) and off it will go. More waiting.

Update: Mailed with corrected money order on 10-15-2018. My AZ permit was in my mailbox this afternoon, 10-24-2018. That was quick! I mailed the first package on 10-02-2018.

Don't be so sure. It wasn't that long ago AZ had NO concealed carry, much less with a permit.

Exactly why I suggest getting as many non-resident permits as you can if you travel often. Reciprocity/Recognition changes way too often!

Yep, I will always keep both a UT and AZ permit for that reason, even though 95% of they states they cover are the same (right now). Things change.

Put my AZ application in the mail on 10/5, permit arrived on 10/15.

Less than a 2 week turnaround. This is a no-brainer, folks.

Still waiting for my California permit. In the meantime, can i just take the online
NRA basic safety class? $60
And do it at home. The hunter safety is 8
Hours?

I got my prints done at SBSD, but I needed LE to roll Florida. For AZ, you can get it done at the UPS store.

FYI, I am teaching two classes in the IE in the 10th of November. One in Rancho Cucamonga from 8:30-12:30 and one in Moreno Valley from 2:30-6:30.

Both classes can be used to satisfy the training for both Utah and Arizona (as well as a few other states).

Thumbs up

Mine came in the mail today. 9 days after mailing the correctly dated money order. That is how an organization should work! Thank you AZ DPS!
