Whoa... I expire July and have my appointment in April. This is my third renewal, but two years ago lapsed by about 1 month.

Regarding prior weapons experience. Is not having sufficient weapons experience grounds for denial? I ask because I have a date coming up and aside from the weapons quals in basic and frequenting the local gun range, I really do not have "formal" weapons training. Will that hinder me? And how should I word that in the section?

Sounds like me. I have decades of experience with all types of weapons, but except for basic hunter safety when I was a teen, I had no formal training. That doesn't mean I am not proficient in the least. I specifically asked the deputies in the CCW unit in Riverside this. They said that was not a problem. I think they are just making sure you have basic gun safety knowledge. I did my qualification at Ben Clark. You can read about it here. Pretty scary at times. Several people came there with the "price tag still hanging from the gun" as the deputies described it.

Are you waiting on your renewal? Or are you applying for the first time for a permit? Just curious, because if your doing a renewal that sure is a long time.

For the letter of reference can it be a generic letter that I can copy and have three different people sign? or does it have to be a different letter for each reference.

I'm pretty sure the same letter x3 with different signatures seems suspect. It's not that hard to have a friend say "hey this guy isn't crazy and if he carries a gun it's OK by me"

Thanks, I'm regretting moving from San Bernardino to Riverside county. The SBSO CCW process was so simple and fast. Sucks I had to surrender it and start over again with RSO. RSO wants 3x the info.

Not that anyone knows. However, I would suggest you use letters from friends who have not been in trouble with the law.

My 3 letters came from 2 existing CCW holders and 1 FFL. Put your best foot forward.

Firearms Training Associates is doing the renewal classes on Friday's now for $80 for 3 guns.

Talked to Deputy Yezzo...they are processing CCW renewals on Fridays, and they have the qual and class on Saturdays for $100....not sure how many guns...

They also moved into another building with more space.

This is not necessarily true. A contact, let alone a detention may very well be documented. FI's (field interviews) are performed all the time and some departments, I don't know about RSO, have these input into a data base. For a detention to occur, the officer has a set standard by law that must be met. Has criminal activity occurred? Occurred is time bound, about to occur, is occurring, has occurred, and is the person being detained reasonably believed to be involved in the criminal activity? Those notes that the officer writes or the conversation that they had with the detained person absolutely may get entered into a data base for information gathering purposes to be easily accessed by other LEO to research criminal activity.

Being less than honest in this interview and getting caught will fail you on the second part of your requirement of whether or not you are of good moral character. Leave it out if you want/dare but you have to live with that. Or simply risk not getting your CCW. Once you get turned down you may find it hard to come back to be successful in your quest. One of the questions asked is if you have ever been denied a CCW. Explain that one to your interviewer.

How was the interview? If i can ask how focus are they on your good cause

Extremely focused. If all else is good...that is what makes or brakes you.

Default Ben Clark

Going to Ben Clark this Saturday for 1st time qualification. Any idea what is needed other than:

Each Firearm
1 box of ammo per firearm
Eye protection
Ear protection

Do we need to bring a holster for each as well? Do they have you draw from concealment?

Thanks for the help as I want to be prepared.

There is good info here. Pay particular attention to my post in this thread.
  • First, don't come to the range qual with the price tag still on your gun. Meaning, take it to the range at least ONCE to make sure you know how it shoots. If you don't know the basics of firearm safety, Ben Clark is NOT the place you should do your qualification.
  • The Deputies running the class are VERY pro-CCW, just don't go in there thinking you are Rambo. At the range, the other CCWers in the class are all very helpful. I loaned some stuff to another student, and others did the same.
  • Yes, you need a holster. They say it has to have a strap or some type of retention on it (other than just being tight in the holster). They didn't seem to care. No one was checking.
  • NO, they do not have you or allow you to draw from concealment. But if you have a IWB type holster, just wear it on top (semi-exposed) of your clothes and you will be fine.
  • If you have a bullet proof vest, bring it. Otherwise they have them there.
  • Plan to be there until 4pm and you won't be disappointed. They make the class fun. The range is a bit of unorganized chaos off the line. When you are on the line, it is VERY serious. Just hang in there.
  • They will tell you this, but pick up your brass after you finish.
  • Bring a sack lunch will make things easier.
  • Bring ALL your handguns. Even if you purchased one since you turned in your app, you can add it at the training. Riverside is not doing adds after your training. You will have to wait TWO YEARS to add another gun.
  • BTW, if your gun is modified at all, particularly self-stippling, they may not allow you to use it as a CCW.

Curious why stippling would be an issue. Did the range staff happen to say?

I did my training at Jerry Woods. All of my guns were modified. Nobody checked. The instructor even used one of my guns as an example, and he never said a word about modifications.

I'm getting ready to read through some of this very long thread. But maybe you guys can save me some time.

Over a year ago I got my appointment. My appointment is in July. That is all that I have done. I don't even know what to do from here. I know the appointments were backed up so I did that and figured I would sort the rest out later but now the date is getting close and I need to make sure I have all of my ducks lined up. Thank You.

I recommend to print out the justice department packet and the sheriffs department packet. I printed out two sets of each. One for rough draft and one for your final turn in packet. I had to wait 9 months for my interview and wanted to make sure the papers were perfect. I didn't date anything until the night before my interview.

Also, start getting your character references together. Make sure the letters clearly state that they are aware you are applying for your concealed carry permit.

Polish your good cause.

And finally, I was pretty confident in my good cause so I went ahead and qualified before my interview. I recently had shoulder surgery so I wanted to qualify while I could still hold up my my arm.

I hope this helps. BTW, my wife's interview is in June. So she is a month ahead of you. I think she is gonna qualify before her interview.

I qualified at Jerry Woods in Indio. There was only two of us in the class and it was a great experience. My appointment was for 8:00 or 9:00 am and I was home by 3:00. I qualified with 4 guns.

Great. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
Do you have a link or where can I find the packets to print.

Good Cause. I have a few.... please let me know what you think.
1. I flip houses for a living. I go into some sketchy houses and I have walked in on squatters.
2. My son is in law enforcement and we have had a few issues with locals threatening us.
3. I'm president of a booster club and handle/transport lots of cash.

Is it a good idea to have my friends in law enforcement write the character letters? Or does it not really matter.

I don't think it would help or hurt. As far as I know they don't contact the references at all. Don't even understand why it's a requirement. Is someone really going to submit a negative reference letter?

Just be sure they specifically state that the letter is for a CCW permit. That seems to be the biggest issue on the references.

Good luck!
